After arriving at OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in the morning, proceed through immigration and customs. Once in the arrivals hall, you will be met by a meet & greet representative, who will assist you with the collection of your rental vehicle.

After completing the formalities, begin your self-drive journey towards the Mpumalanga highlands. The drive takes approximately 4–5 hours, depending on traffic and stops along the way, and offers a scenic transition from the urban landscape of Johannesburg to rolling hills, forests, and mountain passes.

Recommended stop en route:

  • Long Tom Pass – One of South Africa’s most scenic mountain passes, offering sweeping views, crisp mountain air, and an ideal place to stretch your legs and enjoy the dramatic highland scenery.

On arrival at Hops Hollow, check in and settle into your accommodation, nestled in peaceful surroundings and surrounded by nature. The remainder of the day is at leisure — perfect for relaxing after your flight and drive, enjoying the tranquil setting, or taking a short walk around the property.

Day 2: Hazyview

From the Bush to the Panorama Route

Kruger National Park → Hazyview

Rise early for a final morning game drive in Kruger National Park, making the most of the cool hours for one last chance to spot wildlife as the bush comes to life. After returning to Mdluli Safari Lodge for breakfast, check out and begin your self-drive journey toward Hazyview.

En route, we highly recommend following the Panorama Route, one of South Africa’s most scenic drives. This dramatic escarpment region offers sweeping views, deep canyons, and striking geological formations. Suggested stops along the way include:

  • God’s Window – Offering breathtaking views over the Lowveld on clear days, with forested walking paths leading to scenic viewpoints.

  • Three Rondavels Viewpoint – A classic lookout over the Blyde River Canyon, showcasing towering rock formations and vast landscapes.

  • Bourke’s Luck Potholes – A fascinating natural phenomenon where swirling water has sculpted smooth cylindrical rock formations over centuries.

Take your time exploring these highlights before continuing to Idle & Wild in Hazyview. On arrival, check in and enjoy a relaxed evening, reflecting on your safari adventures and the dramatic scenery of the day.

Day 3: Hazyview

Exploring Mpumalanga at Your Own Pace

Today is a free day to continue discovering the dramatic landscapes of the Panorama Route, one of South Africa’s most celebrated scenic regions. With breakfast at your accommodation, you have the flexibility to explore at your own rhythm, choosing the stops that most appeal to you.

Recommended highlights for the day include:

  • Mac Mac Falls – Twin waterfalls set amid lush greenery, easily accessible and ideal for a short scenic stop.

  • Pilgrim’s Rest – A beautifully preserved historic gold-mining town where time seems to stand still, offering museums, cafés, and a glimpse into South Africa’s past.

  • Berlin Falls – A tall, narrow waterfall plunging into a deep pool, named by early German settlers.

  • Bridal Veil Falls – One of the most picturesque waterfalls in the area, cascading gently through indigenous forest.

  • Graskop Gorge Lift Company – Take a glass lift down into the gorge to explore a forested canyon floor with elevated walkways and suspension bridges (optional and payable direct).

With a mix of waterfalls, history, and unique viewpoints, the day offers endless opportunities for photography, short walks, and relaxed exploration. Return to Idle & Wild in the late afternoon to unwind and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Day 4: Balule Private Game Reserve

From Highlands to the African Bush

Hops Hollow → Ku Sungula Safari Lodge (Balule Private Game Reserve)

After breakfast at Hops Hollow, check out and begin your self-drive journey north towards the Balule Private Game Reserve, part of the Greater Kruger ecosystem. The drive takes approximately 4–5 hours, depending on route and comfort stops, and offers a gradual transition from misty highland scenery to warmer Lowveld landscapes dotted with acacia trees and open savanna.

As you approach the reserve, the sense of wilderness increases, setting the stage for your first true safari experience. On arrival at Ku Sungula Safari Lodge, check in and take some time to settle into your surroundings.

Later in the afternoon, enjoy your included guided safari game drive in an open 4x4 vehicle. Accompanied by experienced guides, venture into the private reserve in search of wildlife such as elephants, giraffes, antelope, and, with luck, predators as the day begins to cool. The experience concludes with a classic sundowner in the bush, where you can enjoy drinks while watching the African sunset — a memorable introduction to life in the wild.

Return to the lodge in the evening to relax and enjoy the atmosphere of the bush.

Today is dedicated entirely to experiencing the sights, sounds, and rhythms of the Balule Private Game Reserve, part of the Greater Kruger ecosystem. With all meals provided at the lodge and two guided activities included, the day unfolds at a classic safari pace.

The day begins early with a morning game drive in an open 4x4 vehicle. As the bush comes alive with the cooler temperatures of dawn, this is one of the best times to encounter wildlife at its most active. Accompanied by experienced guides, explore the reserve in search of elephants, giraffes, plains game, and, with luck, predators returning from the night’s hunt.

After returning to the lodge for breakfast and time to relax, enjoy the quieter hours of the day — whether resting in your chalet, watching wildlife from the lodge, or simply soaking in the peaceful surroundings.

In the late afternoon, head out again for an afternoon game drive, when the changing light and cooling air bring renewed wildlife activity. As the sun sets over the savanna, pause to enjoy the golden hour before returning to the lodge for dinner under the African sky.

This full day offers an authentic and unhurried safari experience, allowing time to truly connect with the wilderness.

Day 6: Southern Kruger

From Private Reserve to Kruger National Park

Balule Private Game Reserve → Mdluli Safari Lodge (Kruger National Park)

Begin the day with an early morning game drive in the Balule Private Game Reserve, taking advantage of the cool hours when wildlife is most active. This final drive in Balule offers one last opportunity to spot animals moving through the bush before returning to the lodge for breakfast.

After breakfast, check out of Ku Sungula Safari Lodge and begin your self-drive journey to Mdluli Safari Lodge, located inside Kruger National Park. To reach the lodge, you will enter Kruger via either Paul Kruger Gate or Phabeni Gate.

Please allow plenty of travel time for this journey. Speed limits within Kruger are strictly enforced at 50 km/h, and wildlife sightings along the way may encourage frequent stops — all part of the adventure of driving through one of Africa’s most iconic national parks.

Arrive at Mdluli Safari Lodge in time for lunch and check-in. The lodge’s location within Kruger provides a wonderful sense of immersion, combining comfort with direct access to the surrounding wilderness.

In the afternoon, enjoy a guided game drive operated by the lodge. With expert rangers and open safari vehicles, this drive offers a different perspective from self-driving and increases your chances of encountering a wide range of wildlife as the day cools.

Return to the lodge in the evening to relax and enjoy dinner, surrounded by the sounds of the African bush.

Days 7 - 8: Southern Kruger

For the next two days, you will be based at Mdluli Safari Lodge, located within the iconic Kruger National Park, on a full board basis. These days are dedicated to immersing yourself in one of Africa’s greatest wildlife reserves, with a rhythm shaped by the movements of the bush.

Your stay includes two guided game drives per day, one in the early morning and one in the late afternoon. Accompanied by expert rangers and trackers in open 4x4 safari vehicles, you will explore Kruger’s diverse habitats in search of elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos, buffalo, and a remarkable variety of plains game and birdlife.

Between activities, enjoy time at leisure at the lodge. Relax in your tented suite, take in the views from the deck, or unwind in the shared areas while listening to the sounds of the surrounding wilderness. Lunches are served at the lodge, offering a welcome break during the warmer part of the day.

Evenings are a special highlight, as the sun sets over the bush and nocturnal sounds begin to emerge. After your afternoon game drive, return to the lodge for dinner and a relaxed evening under the stars.

Day 9: Vilankulos

After breakfast, check out of Idle & Wild and begin your self-drive to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (MQP). On arrival, return your rental car and check in for your scheduled flight to Vilanculos International Airport (VNX) in Mozambique.

The journey marks a clear change in scenery and pace, as you travel from South Africa’s lush escarpments to the warm, tropical coastline of the Indian Ocean. Upon arrival in Vilanculos, proceed through immigration and customs formalities before being met by staff from AsDunas Lodge.

You will then be transferred to the lodge, where you can settle in and begin to embrace the relaxed coastal atmosphere. The remainder of the day is at leisure — perfect for unwinding after travel, enjoying the beach, or simply easing into island time.

Boat Trip & Snorkeling Adventure

Today is dedicated to discovering the natural beauty of the Bazaruto Archipelago, one of Mozambique’s most pristine marine environments. After breakfast at the lodge, you will head out for a boat excursion with Wild Africa Mozambique, exploring the turquoise waters and idyllic islands of this protected archipelago.

Travel by boat across crystal-clear seas, keeping an eye out for dolphins and other marine life along the way. The archipelago is renowned for its vibrant coral reefs, and time will be spent snorkeling in selected locations, offering the chance to observe colorful fish and marine ecosystems in their natural habitat.

Between activities, enjoy time on the islands themselves — walking along untouched beaches, relaxing in the shade, or simply soaking in the stunning surroundings where white sand meets the deep blue of the Indian Ocean.

After the excursion, return to AsDunas Lodge in the afternoon with time to relax and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.

Spend your time unwinding on the beach, swimming in the warm ocean, or simply relaxing at the lodge and soaking in the laid-back coastal atmosphere. The rhythm here is slow and unhurried — perfect for switching off after your safari and road-trip adventures.

For those who wish to be more active, a variety of optional activities can be arranged locally (payable direct), including:

  • Snorkeling in the clear waters along the coast

  • Horse riding on the beach and surrounding dunes

  • Scuba diving for certified divers

  • Additional marine and land-based excursions offered by the lodge

At the appropriate time, you will be transferred to Vilanculos International Airport for your onward international flight.

As your journey comes to an end, take with you lasting memories — from the scenic drives along South Africa’s Panorama Route and the wildlife encounters in Greater Kruger, to the pristine beaches and turquoise waters of Mozambique.
