Set out this morning on a walking tour to discover the city of Como nestled on the southern edge of stunning Lake Como.  Begin with a visit to the imposing Duomo and 13th-century Broletto (town hall) as well as to the breath taking frescos of the San Felipe Church.  Walk along the old city walls to the Porta Vittoria, a remnant of the 12th-century fortifications built to protect the city.

Today is sure to be one of the highlights of your trip as we invite you to engage with the local community in a truly authentic way with our Evolved Experiences. The Evolved Traveler believes travel is “evolving” into something more than we have previously experienced or knew it to be. There is a desire for it to be more meaningful, more impactful, more enriching, and certainly more engaging, and that is why we have created the Evolved Experience.

Evolved Experiences are a core and unique component to all our journeys that allow our guests the opportunity to make a lasting impression on the communities they visit, extend their hand in a gesture of global community, and create memories that can be cherished for years to come, not only for themselves but for those they visit.

Your Evolved Experience today will be a visit to the Academy of Fine Arts, a unique university specializing in art restoration.  You will be guided through the Academy by one of the students who will explain the specialized methods used and taught at the school.  Afterward, enjoy lunch with some of the students to discuss their passion for art and to learn of their life in Italy.

The remainder of the day will be free to pursue your own interests in Como.

Venice

Day notes

Begin your exploration of Venice today with a half-day tour of the city’s highlights starting with the Byzantine Basilica of San Marco (St. Mark’s), the patron saint of Venice.  The cathedral was originally the “chapel” of the Doge and only became the city’s cathedral in 1807.  Continue to the adjacent, gothic Doge’s Palace, home of the Doge of Venice – the highest authority of the Republic of Venice, for a private tour, and a visit to one of the city’s most nostalgic sites, the Bridge of Sighs.  The famed bridge connects the Doge’s Palace with the prison and was so named because it gave prisoners their final view of the city.  Let your guide lead you through the busy passages and secret alleys as you gain an in-depth perspective of the city as you make your way to the Rialto Bridge where you will board a gondola.  Finally, a special visit to the gondola building yard will be arranged for you to learn the secrets of building Venice's famed gondolas.   All the gondolas in Venice are built or repaired at just three remaining boatyards and are specifically built according to an exact science that has been maintained and practiced for centuries.

Venice

Day notes

Today, set out for an adventure to discover the Venice Lagoon islands of Murano, Torcello, and Burano.  You will take a public ferry to Murano, famed for the making of Venetian glass.  The island is only a mile wide and at one time was the main producer of glass in Europe. You will have the opportunity of visiting glass workshops to see the artisans at work during your visit to the island.  Continue to Torcello, populated with only about 60 residents, for a short visit before a visit to Burano – not one island but four!  All of the islets are linked to together by bridges.  The island(s) today is trendy for its brightly painted houses popular with artists.  The colors of the houses follow a specific system originating from the golden age of its development; if someone wishes to paint their home, one must send a request to the government, who will respond by taking notice of the certain colors permitted for that lot.

Return to the city in time for lunch and enjoy the afternoon in Venice at leisure.
