Mountain Gorilla Trekking The Nkuringo Walking Safari Buniga Batwa Experience

Uganda’s forests are home to over half the world’s 1004 or so mountain gorillas (as of May 2018) – the rest live in the neighboring Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. As they do not survive in captivity, preservation of these fragile habitats is essential for their survival.

In Uganda mountain gorillas are found in two parks – Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga National Park – and tracking takes place at 5 locations. All locations combined give a total of over 20 gorilla groups and this figure includes two groups under habituation and one group only for researchers.

Max 8 people are allowed per each gorilla group and for maximum 1 hour. Permits are 700US$ (including Park Entrance Fee) or you can spend 4 hours with family of Gorilla under the Gorilla Habituation Experience for 1500US$

The minimum age for gorilla tracking is 15 years and there are specific behavior guidelines to follow. Due to the steep terrain, the thick vegetation and the high altitude, a good level of fitness is required.

The Batwa Experience is a historical drama acting by the Batwa Pygmy people of what their life used to be like in the forest. Highlights include learning about medicinal herbs, traditional shelters, fire making, honey harvesting, burial rituals, different types of snares, and more. The Batwa do not just demonstrate their culture for tourists, but also for their own children, so they strive for authenticity. The experience was designed by a professional anthropologist together with Batwa elders who had lived in the forest. Proceeds from the tour go to Batwa education and healthcare.

Echo of the elephants is a documentary about a family of elephants in Amboseli National Park. It unravels the informative ecological and biological intrigues in the ever-elusive elephant’s world: but this time about this particular family led by Echo.

Amboseli Serena has taken a leading role in environmental protection and preservation with a comprehensive action programme, the Re-forestation Programme. This conservation scheme encourages guests at the Lodge to participate and plant “their” own trees. All the trees planted are indigenous species that consist of specifically drought resistant species such as Acacia spp., Mellia, Croton and Commiphora.

Our central dining area is reached by a timbered bridge spanning a mountain-fed stream and is flanked by water gardens. The walls feature hand-painted wildlife murals while the décor reflects the traditional culture and heritage of the Maasai people. The spacious lounge and bar feature a broad terrace and a blazing fire-pit where evening cocktails can be enjoyed.

Breakfast and lunch are presented buffet-style and feature a wide range of international choices. In typical safari style, we offer a full English breakfast as well as European options while our lunch menus will typically include meat, poultry, fish and vegetarian options.

Our table d'hôte dinner menus feature a salad buffet, soup, entrée, pudding, cheese and biscuits and tea or coffee. Vegetarian options are always available. Guests may also enjoy theme nights, with specialties ranging from pasta and Mongolian-style stir-fry, BBQ and spiced roast to Kenyan favourites like “Nyama Choma” (traditionally roasted meats), “Sukuma” (local kale cooked with tomatoes, onions, garlic and coriander), “Posho” (maize) and other local delicacies.

There's nothing quite as quintessentially "Safari" as a traditional bush dinner, especially when enlivened by the presence of scarlet-clad Maasai morans (warriors). Located in a grove of acacia trees adjacent to the lodge, your lantern-lit evening begins with cocktails around the campfire. A six-course dinner will then be prepared on a blazing BBQ, accompanied by a wide variety of salads and vegetables. As dessert and coffee are served, the Maasai will entertain you with songs, chants, and dance displays. Dine in the wild and experience the essence of safari life at its finest.

Few dining experiences are more memorable or as typically Kenyan as breakfast in the bush. Setting off after an early morning cup of tea, you can enjoy a fascinating game drive into the bush where, at one of our specially chosen breakfast sites, a full English breakfast will be cooked before you. Enjoy a glass of chilled ‘buck's fizz' while you savour the experience.

Timed to commence as the sun starts its descent, the Amboseli Serena Sundowner begins with a gentle evening game drive, arriving at Observation Hill just as the evening sky turns golden-pink. Safari chairs will be set up looking towards the mountain. There will also be a full bar service and cocktail snacks. Musical entertainment can also be provided. As night falls, you will be driven back to the lodge in time for dinner, passing the swamps at the ideal time to spot hippos out of the water.

This activity can also be enjoyed within the lodge's grounds.

Ilkeliani Camp, perfectly located on the Talek River and nestled within a riverine forest, creates an ideal backdrop for a memorable safari experience. The camp is divided into two wings, premium and deluxe, each offering distinct accommodations.

The premium wing hosts four rooms along with one premium family tent. The luxurious family tent, comfortably furnished with subtle lighting and elegant decor, enhances the overall safari atmosphere. Strategically placed within a grove of trees, each suite ensures complete privacy and has a separate private entrance.

The deluxe wing features six rooms and one family tent, which can comfortably accommodate four guests. Each room, minding the necessities for a unique safari outing, accentuates the little luxuries that ensure a comfortable stay for guests.

Our roomy tented suites, perched on stilts, provide sweeping views of the Talek River and golden plains of the Maasai Mara. Outfitted with expansive wooden decks featuring detachable canvas sides, guests can enjoy the seamless blend of comfort and an intimate connection with nature.
