First Cave Camp, also known as Simba Camp, perched at 2,671 metres on Kilimanjaro’s north‑eastern flank, marks the initial resting point for trekkers on the Rongai Route. Modest in scale and lightly frequented, it provides a quiet atmosphere away from the busier southern trails. Facilities are simple, with a ranger’s hut and pit latrines as the only permanent structures, while tents are pitched on open ground. The camp sits within the heath and moorland zone, surrounded by tall grasses and heathers, with dramatic views across the borderlands. Its location makes it an ideal acclimatisation stop before continuing towards Second Cave and higher camps.

Kikelelwa Camp sits at 3,600 metres along the Rongai Route, offering trekkers a quiet overnight stop surrounded by sweeping moorland scenery. The camp is reached after ascending through forest and heathland, and its elevated position provides expansive views across the slopes of Kilimanjaro. It serves as a resting point before continuing towards Mawenzi Tarn, allowing climbers to acclimatise while enjoying the tranquillity of the highlands. With its open setting and dramatic vistas, Kikelelwa Camp invites guests to pause, appreciate the mountain’s grandeur, and prepare for the next stage of their journey in an atmosphere of calm and natural beauty.

Perched at 4,305 metres on Mount Kilimanjaro’s quieter Rongai Route, Mawenzi Tarn Camp offers a simple yet atmospheric overnight stop for climbers. Accommodation is in basic trekking tents, set against the dramatic backdrop of Mawenzi Peak, with shared pit latrines serving as the primary facilities. Water sourced from a nearby tarn supports essential camp needs, though it is not suitable for drinking. The camp’s appeal lies in its secluded setting, where trekkers rest and acclimatise before continuing their ascent across the stark alpine landscape towards Kibo, experiencing Kilimanjaro’s raw beauty and sense of remoteness.

Horombo Huts, at 3,720 metres on Kilimanjaro’s Marangu Route, is the second major overnight stop between Mandara Hut and Kibo Hut. It is one of the mountain’s largest campsites, with capacity for around 120 hikers. Accommodation is provided in wooden cabins that house six to eight climbers, alongside tent space. Facilities include pit latrines, a dining hall, and a ranger’s office for registration and safety. The camp’s location offers striking views of Mawenzi Peak and access to the Zebra Rocks, making it an important acclimatisation point where trekkers pause before continuing their ascent towards Kibo Hut.

The Legendary Lodge is located on the outskirts of Arusha in lush tropical gardens and surrounded by a working coffee farm. It is within 15 minutes’ drive of Arusha Airport, which makes it an ideal base for the first or last night of a safari. You can enjoy views of Mount Meru from the privacy of your own garden cottage.

The spacious 10 One Bedroom Garden Cottages and 2 Two Bedroom Garden Cottages are on a split level and the accommodation and facilities are clearly luxurious. A very large bedroom suite is complemented by a huge bathroom with a tub and separate shower. They have a pleasant blend of African arts with modern comforts and old colonial style luxury. Beds are king-size and there is a fireplace. Additional services include a complimentary mini bar and fruit basket and wifi connection. Each cottage has a large veranda with impressive views of Mount Meru.

The cottages are set in gardens with manicured lawns and a blaze of tropical flowers. The cottages are complemented by the very homely main farmhouse building with its dining room, reception and library areas.

Mwiba River Lodge opened in summer 2013 in the Mwiba Wildlife Reserve, a private area of 51,000 hectares to the west of the Serengeti National Park.

This is an area where the large herds of the Great Migration settle between December and early March for the calving season. As it is not in the Park, it is not subject to Park restrictions, so off-road driving, night drives and game walks are all permitted. It comprises eight spacious rooms all with a double bed and a sofa bed, and an inside and outside shower, and bathtub and a flush toilet. The rooms are spread out and are about a 2 minutes’ walk from each other, so everything is very private.

It is built overlooking the river, and it is sculptured into the natural rocks, especially in the public areas of the dining room and lounge bar. There is an infinity pool and a well-frequented waterhole. You can lie by the swimming pool and watch the wildlife activity at the wildlife pool; the lodge has 24/7 water and electricity.

Little Chem Chem is located in a huge unfenced concession of 16,000 hectares. There is good game in the immediate vicinity, with regular leopard and cheetah sightings. Venture a little further afield and you come to Tarangire National Park, which is about 25 minutes away. Here you will find all the game you are looking for. Tarangire is especially known for its huge herds of elephants, and for the amazing ancient Giant Baobab trees which dominate parts of the landscape.

For access Little Chem Chem is about an hour from Lake Manyara airstrip, and slightly longer from the safari capital of Arusha...both on the same good tarmac road.

Little Chem Chem comprises 5 tents, each with a sewn in base set on a brick deck, and furnished in Classic camping style, with a veranda, vanity/dressing area, an integrated flush toilet and safari shower. 3 tents are doubles and 2 are twins. The setting and rationale is pioneer camping....Mozart and Crystal, Finch Hatton, Hemingway, Charlie Cottar...with all the trimmings they would have taken with them.
