The Whale Trail offers a unique and diverse experience in the De Hoop Nature Reserve, spanning 55 km from Potberg to Koppie Alleen. Nature lovers will relish the opportunity to explore the reserve's rich diversity, from the fragrant fynbos on the Potberg mountains to the limestone fynbos plains mingling with the salty sea air. Hikers can spot indigenous plants, the last vulture colony in the Western Cape, diverse bird species, and small antelope. Notably, De Hoop is renowned for exceptional whale-watching between June and December, with over 50 southern right whales often seen just a kilometre from the coastline. The trail is designed for moderately fit nature enthusiasts and takes five days to complete, with varying levels of intensity each day.
