The Full-Day Desert-Adapted Elephant Tracking excursion is Huab Lodge's signature activity and one of the most exclusive wildlife experiences available in Namibia. Guests venture deep into the remote Huab wilderness in search of the iconic desert-adapted elephants. This is a true African wilderness experience where nature determines the day.
Your day begins with a well-balanced breakfast, before departing the lodge. Travelling along the sandy Huab Riverbed and its surrounding tributaries, your experienced guide and tracker will turn the excursion into a genuine tracking adventure. Every safari is unique, as the elephants roam freely across this vast wilderness.
As you explore the dramatic landscapes of the Huab Valley, you'll discover a variety of wildlife, birdlife, and breath-taking scenery. If the elephants are located, you'll have the opportunity to observe these magnificent animals respectfully in their natural habitat.
After a coffee break, the journey continues with a visit to the wildlife water dam, build by Deon and his team in 2025, an important water source for many of the valley's animals.
Around noon, you'll stop for a refreshing cold drink while your guide prepares a traditional Namibian braai (barbecue).
After lunch, we drive back through the valley, arriving at Huab Lodge in the afternoon.
Step back in time and discover the rich cultural heritage of Damaraland on this fascinating journey through ancient landscapes shaped by thousands of years of history.
After breakfast, depart the lodge and travel east through the striking scenery of Damaraland. During the approximately 45-minute drive, your guide will share insights into the unique geology, wildlife and history of the region.
Your destination is a remarkable collection of San (Bushman) rock engravings, created by some of Namibia's earliest inhabitants more than 2,000 years ago. A guided walk through the area reveals fascinating engravings and provides an opportunity to learn about the traditions, beliefs and daily lives of the San people.
Along the way, you'll also visit historic German graves, offering a glimpse into Namibia's colonial past and highlighting the diverse cultures that have shaped this extraordinary landscape.
Midway through the excursion, relax with a scenic coffee or tea break, accompanied by light snacks, before continuing your exploration.
The excursion returns to Huab Lodge at approximately 12:30, leaving plenty of time to enjoy lunch at the lodge and relax at the pool.
Discover the remarkable landscapes and rich birdlife of the Huab Valley on a relaxed half-day guided drive. This excursion is perfect for bird enthusiasts, nature lovers, and photographers who wish to experience the diversity of this unique wilderness.
The drive begins after breakfast. Leaving the lodge following the ephemeral riverbed, we explore the spectacular Huab Valley, renowned for its dramatic scenery, fascinating geology, and diverse birdlife.
The excursion focuses on the many bird species that inhabit the valley. Depending on the season and conditions, you may encounter to name a few:
•Verreaux's Eagle
•Rosy-faced Lovebird
•Monteiro's Hornbill
•Damara Hornbill
•Bare-cheeked Babbler
•African Hawk-Eagle
Along the way, your guide will share interesting information about the valley's unique geology, rock formations, vegetation, and wildlife.
While birds are the main focus, keep an eye out for some of the valley's mammals, including baboons, klipspringers, and a variety of other smaller wildlife that call this landscape home.
Experience the tranquillity of the Huab Valley as the African bush awakens with the first light of day. This guided walk offers the opportunity to experience the landscape on foot while learning about the area's flora, fauna, geology and ecology.
Start the day with a peaceful guided walk through the spectacular Huab landscape. The walk begins just before sunrise, allowing clients to experience the fresh morning air, beautiful light, and the awakening of nature.
The exact departure time varies throughout the year and will be confirmed the evening before the walk.
Before setting off, enjoy a quick cup of freshly brewed coffee or tea accompanied by a rusk.
From the lodge, we make our way through the riverbed before crossing to the opposite riverbank. The route follows a combination of animal footpaths and old jeep tracks, offering an authentic bush walking experience.
The walk gradually leads to a small hill, which involves a short, gentle climb. The morning's effort is rewarded with a stunning viewpoint overlooking the neighbouring farm, Huab Lodge, and the vast, beautiful landscape that makes this area so special.
The Sundowner Scenic Drive offers guests the opportunity to experience the spectacular landscapes of Huab Lodge during the most magical time of day. As the afternoon light softens into sunset, the colours and shadows transform the Huab Valley, creating a peaceful and unforgettable wilderness experience.
This relaxed excursion combines scenic driving, nature appreciation, photography, and a traditional Namibian sundowner in a truly remote setting.
The drive explores either the scenic Huab River Valley or the mountain slopes on the opposite side of the valley, depending on seasonal conditions and where the best scenery can be enjoyed.
Travelling through this remote wilderness, guests experience the changing colours of the landscape as the late afternoon light gives way to sunset. The shifting shadows across the valleys and rocky hillsides create a constantly changing panorama, highlighting the vastness, tranquillity, and beauty of the Huab region.

EXPERIENCE THE NAMIB
DESERT ON HORSEBACK
For the more adventurous spirit, Desert Homestead Lodge offers a unique experience where guests can ride out onto the private reserve and sleep out in nature. The reserve is situated between the majestic red sand sea of the Namib Desert and the rugged Naukluft mountains.
Leaving the stables and lodge behind, an unforgettable journey set off through wide open plains riding over a varied terrain changing from soft, sandy, stretched open fields, to rockier mountain trails, through dry riverbeds, under social weavers nests and around camelthorn trees.
The experienced guide will eagerly tell more about the environment, fauna and flora. Riders are almost guaranteed to come across a herd or two of grazing Oryx, springbok, or Zebra and some varieties of smaller carnivores, such as Jackal and bat-eared foxes.
Riding takes place at a comfortable pace so that everyone feels comfortable. Slower riders can hang back while more experienced riders go for long stretched-out gallops over grassy plains while winding the way towards the tented Camp, where refreshments await for a truly remarkable sundowner with magnificent views. After watching the sunset over the majestic mountains it’s time to kick off the boots, relax and enjoy the Namibian night skies. While Dinner gets ready on the campfire true Namibian style a refreshing shower awaits.
Dinner is served next to the crackling fire whilst conversation is sure to revert to the day riding. Then it’s time to retire to the comfortable tent or even a stretcher outside, for those who prefer to sleep out in nature under starry skies to get some rest before the next day’s riding.
Riders will wake up the next morning to the smell of coffee brewing and bacon and eggs cooking over an open fire while watching the horses being prepared for the next stretch of riding. After a hearty breakfast, it is time to stretch the legs once again and set off on horses who eagerly await the rest of the adventure.
This experience can be tailored. There are three different offers.
The ‚Namib Night‘ begins in the afternoon and consists of two stages of riding and one overnight stay in tents. The ‚Desert Experience‘ begins early in the morning and has three stages slightly
longer riding with an overnight stay in tents.
‚Stars of the Namib‘ with five stages of riding and two overnight stays (Namib Outpost / tented camp) offers a very intense experience for horse lovers, coupled with the exploration of nature in the Namib Desert. Riding to the next destination is done during the cooler time of the day while enjoying some lunch and downtime during the heat of the day.
Horses vary from very tame and easy to ride -even if for those who have never ridden before-, to ones that are just as easily manageable, but willing and able to give a more exciting ride.
Beginners are just as welcome to join on this adventure as more experienced riders.
