At Savegre Hotel, you have the best opportunity to find and observe this spectacular bird. The Aztecs believed that the Resplendent Quetzal was the representation of Quetzalcoatl, their supreme god.
One of our guides will take you to the places where the quetzal feeds on aguacatillos, its favorite fruit. A few seconds of observation of the quetzal is enough to appreciate why it is considered the most beautiful species of the American continent.
Tour starts at 5:15am and ends at approximately 7:30am.
We will begin our day of adventure with an exciting ride in safari cars specially designed to explore the mountainous terrain of this region. We will climb aboard and head to the top of the mountain, enjoying ourselves as we admire the natural beauty that surrounds us.
Once at the top, our naturalist guide will take us on a walking tour of the mountain trails. We will discover the rich biodiversity of the region, learn about the local flora and fauna, and hear fascinating stories about the history of this area.
Our next stop will take us to a panoramic viewpoint with spectacular views of the valley. Here we will have the opportunity to take breathtaking photos and appreciate the majesty of nature while enjoying a moment of peace and contemplation.
After enjoying the beauty of the landscape, we will head to Las Bromelias restaurant to enjoy a delicious lunch. Lunch is included in the tour and will feature a selection of dishes prepared with fresh, local ingredients. In addition, everyone will receive a glass of wine to pair with the meal and enhance the culinary experience.
It starts at 10:00 a.m. and lasts approximately two hours, plus lunch.
Bird watching is one of the fastest-growing pastimes with more and more enthusiasts around the world. At Hotel Savegre, you arrive at a place that can offer superlative birding, so much so that San Gerardo de Dota is the only destination in Costa Rica mentioned in the book: Fifty Places to Go Birding Before You Die: Experts Share the World’s Greatest Destinations.
Morning birdsong heralds the start of an unforgettable experience in the cloud forest. During breakfast, the hummingbirds give you an indication of what your excursion will be like.
After meeting your guide at the hotel reception, you set out on your walk. Our bird list has more than 170 species and some are endemic to the zone. Along our trails, you will be able to find the most elusive and hard-to-spot species, real trophies for birders who want to increase their life list.
The tour consists of short walks around the hotel or in our private reserve. Mornings, just after dawn, are the best time for seeing most species

Discover another side of the cloud forest. Recommended for birders or anyone who wants to experience the forest at night. This tour starts by searching for the Dusky Nightjar in the open ground by the hotel. Then, as the mysterious sounds of the night forest build up after sunset, your guide will help you look for various owl species such as the Bare-shanked Screech-Owl, Mottled Owl and the elusive Unspotted Saw-whet Owl.
Approximate duration 3 hours- Starts at 5:00 p.m.
This outing is the gateway to discovering Costa Rica’s newest National Park: Los Quetzales N.P. Decreed a National Park in July, 2005, it covers 5000 hectares (12,350 acres) and includes three forest zones and 14 eco-systems. Its objective is to preserve highland forests and protect the water sources found there.
Find your guide at reception and get ready to explore the Continental Divide separating the eco-systems between North and South America.
Upon arrival, you start by searching for endemic bird species as your guide explains the natural history of this unique area.
After a short walk from where you leave the car, you will discover one of the most impressive panoramas you’ll have ever seen … on the right the Talamanca Cordillera and the volcanoes of the Central Volcanic Cordillera, in front of the central Pacific and a bit to the left the southern Pacific leading towards the Valle del General and the Osa Peninsula and behind you, Chirripó, Costa Rica’s highest peak.
Approximate duration 5 hours- starts at 8:30 a.m.
A trail that connects the highest point of Buena Vista Mountain, at 3,492 meters above sea level, with the hotel, located at 2,200 meters. This route can be done both uphill, starting from the hotel, and downhill, starting at the summit. On a clear day, it is possible to admire views of the central and southern Pacific, as well as some of the volcanoes of the Cordillera Central, giving the sensation of looking at a life-size map.
During the hike, the ecosystem is explored at different altitudes. If you start from the summit, the trail descends through the subalpine forest, where the vegetation does not grow more than one meter. This area, known as Paramo, is characteristic of the high areas of the Talamanca Mountain Range and the South American Andes. If the route is uphill, the landscape transforms from the cloud forest, with its imposing oak trees and evergreen vegetation, to the Paramo.
Whether uphill or downhill, this unique experience will leave an indelible mark. Approximately five hours after the start, the trail culminates at the hotel, where you can enjoy a drink at the bar or relax with a massage. Total duration varies between 6 and 8 hours.

Located in the heart of the Arenal Volcano National Park, the Arenal Observatory Lodge & Trails is a gateway to experience the birdlife of Costa Rica, one of the most recommended “Birding Hotspots” in the Arenal & La Fortuna area.
Half of the birds in Costa Rica, more than 500 species have been recorded in our forest, such as the cute cotinga, black-crested flirt, yellow-eared toucanet, parasol bird, black-eared tanager, great peacock curassow, cinnamon-bellied tororoy, golden eagle, tiger heron, etc.
Arenal Observatory Lodge & Trails is one of the best places for birdwatching in Costa Rica and is part of the country's Birding Hotspots Route.
Our 350-hectare property encompasses two life zones: the tropical rainforest of the Caribbean plains and the premontane forest at the foot of the Atlantic slope. The diversity of habitats, from primary and secondary forests to agricultural pastures, creates various niches for birds and other animals to inhabit. During your stay at the hotel do not miss the opportunity to climb our 28-meter Observation Tower “The Nest” for a unique birdwatching experience. The abundance of flora and fauna in and around Arenal Observatory Lodge & Trails will make your stay a birdwatching paradise.
70% of life in the forests comes out at night… What are you going to see?

El Jilguero Restaurant
Enjoy delicious meals in our restaurant, El Jilguero, with floor-to-ceiling windows looking at the “so-close-you-could-touch-it” southern slope of Arenal Volcano, and panoramic views of Arenal Lake. Restaurant doors open to the wide viewpoint deck just outside, giving you a completely unobstructed view of the towering volcano and the rainforest leading down to the picturesque lake.
Our terrace doubles as a sun deck and provides the perfect place to meet other travelers from around the world and hear about their adventures. Happy hour on the deck daily from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. is the perfect time to experience the sunset over Lake Arenal. If there is any volcanic activity, this is definitely an excellent spot for front-row viewing. The surrounding gardens draw tropical birds and other animals for fantastic photo opportunities.
Chato’s Bar is another wonderful spot to gather and meet other guests and to see the sunset. Large sofas invite you to relax and chat. You can browse the bookshelves for a good read, or use the chess set.
Our ample breakfast selection will fill you up for a day of adventure with hot coffee and tea, fresh juices, cereals, eggs, bacon, fresh homemade breakfast bread, and Costa Rica’s famous “gallo pinto” breakfast of rice, black beans, and spices.
