Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa | Cape Town

The intimate Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa is ideal if you're looking for a romantic yet fun hotel with a distinctly glamourous feel to it. Five minutes drive from Camps Bay and sandwiched between the 12 Apostles mountain range and the Atlantic Ocean, it has enough on offer to keep you happily ensconced there all day with the top-of-the-range Spa, a breath-taking garden magically perched above the ocean, walking trails up the mountain complete with picnic spots, two heated outdoor pools and Jacuzzis.

The Twelve Apostles offers a choice of dining options. The Azure Restaurant on the first floor gives you the option of dining on the terrace with its seductive sea-views and magnificent sunsets. It offers an innovative Fynbos-inspired tasting menu amidst other dishes including Cape fusion dishes. The chef also identifies healthy eating options on the menu. The Leopard cocktail bar and lounge is a great place to relax before dinner or enjoy your pre-dinner drinks on the terrace overlooking 'The View'. Live entertainment ensures a good vibe. In contrast the Cafe Grill overlooking the gardens is perfect for a light lunch or tea.

The rooms and suites have all the amenities that you would expect from a five star hotel; the 70 luxurious air-conditioned rooms each have television, telephone, DVD player and minibar, international adaptors, complimentary high speed internet connection, air-conditioning, electronic safe and are located in four different wings and the 'skylighted' interlinking corridors are bright and refreshing. The classic rooms (33m²) offer an outlook patio overlooking the indigenous garden (no views). Mountain facing rooms are the same size and overlook the Twelve Apostles Mountain range. Luxury rooms (40m²) have partial sea and mountain views whilst the Superior Sea facing Suites (55m²) are split-level open plan design with a sunken lounge area and a full sea view.

There's lots of unique features at the Twelve Apostles Hotel which we really like such as the 16-seater private movie theatre, complete with milkshakes and popcorn machine on hand; the massage pavilion in the garden for alfresco massage and beauty treatments, the extensive DVD library to choose from, even beach bags in the room ready for use …

The outside gardens of the 12 Apostles are indigenous fynbos mountain gardens with a two heated swimming pools, one overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and a heated rock swimming pool in the garden with cascading fountain. There are a couple of walking trails set out in their mountain reserve with picnic tables and hammocks en route.

The award winning Sanctuary Spa at the Twelve Apostles Hotel is one of the best in Cape Town and is justifiably popular with hotel guests. It offers the full range of treatments including hydrotherapy options with additional facilities such as a brine pool, various Jacuzzis, a rasoul chamber, sauna and steam rooms. It is complemented by a fitness room.

Complimentary shuttles are offered to the V&A Waterfront and Camps Bay on a regular basis from 8am to 9pm. Alternatively why not enjoy a wonderful helicopter ride into Cape Town which is available at very reasonable cost?

Shinde | Okavango Delta

Shinde Camp is nestled on a lush palm dotted island on the edge of Shinde lagoon in the heart of the northern Okavango Delta of Botswana. Shinde Camp is unusual in the Okavango Delta in being able to offer both land activities (game drives and bush walks) and water activities as Shinde is surrounded by clear waterways teeming with birdlife and game.

Shinde is built under the shade of large Mangosteen and Jackalberry trees. The unique dining/lounge areas is known as the 'treehouse' with multi-tiered raised decks offering magnificent views over the Okavango Delta. Here their safari chefs offer imaginative meals cooked with flair and served in style around the communal dining table.

Shinde Camp has eight spacious twin-bedded safari tents with large glass doors and en-suite bathrooms with shower and flush toilet. Each tent is well positioned to enjoy views across the Okavango waters or the open grassland. There's also a swimming pool to enjoy during the heat of the day.

Safari activities are varied at Shinde Camp with expert guides to take you on open 4x4 game drives, boating and mokoro excursions throughout the year as well as game walks and fly fishing (with equipment available) for the more adventurous. Fishing yields a variety of species including Tilapia and tiger fish with the best months being summer from September to May. Kanana | Okavango Delta

Kanana Camp is set on the Xudum river deep in the southern part of the Okavango Delta The Kanana concession encompasses a necklace of islands dotted with fig, palm and other trees. Kanana Camp has been recently rebuilt and accomodation is in eight spacious twin-bedded Bedouin-style tents with wooden floors and sewn-in windows. These are set on raised wooden decks with glorious delta views. The spacious en-suite bathrooms have double basins, shower and flush toilet with outdoor showers added soon. The raised dining and sitting areas form a semi-circle around a massive fig tree which gives a lush feel to the lodge. There's also a swimming pool available for those warm Okavango days.

Activities at Kanana camp are varied. The idyllic hillock of islands formed by fertile eroded termite hills makes for exciting game walks and the concession also offers some of the best mekoro and boating excursions in the Delta. Boating and mekoro trips are the ideal way to sample the excellent birdlife in the area. One of the Southern Hemisphere's most active breeding heronies is on the Kanana concession (with breeding occurring in the spring/summer months from July onwards). The elusive Pel's fishing owl may be spotted if you are lucky. Spin fishing for tilapia, pike or the sharp tooth catfish is also on offer (with equipment available) with the best months being September through to May. However you can also explore the area on day and night drives in open 4x4 vehicles throughout the year.

The Elephant Camp | Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe)

The Elephant Camp lies in its own private concession alongside the Zambezi gorge, near to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwean. Elephant Camp is on a hill, enjoying sweeping views over the grasslands, the dramatic Batoka gorge and towards the spray of Victoria Falls. The main lodge is stylish and flows out onto a wraparound deck which overlooks a waterhole. This is a frequent drinking hole for elephants. On a lower deck is a swimming pool with sun loungers, closer to this waterhole for game-viewing whilst lounging.

Elephant Camp offers an intimate safari experience with only 12 luxury air-conditioned tented suites. The suites overlook the yawning Batoka gorge. All are beautifully appointed with a private viewing deck, plunge pool and outside shower. Inside there's a sitting area, air-conditioning, ceiling fan, tea/coffee facilities and a full bathroom with shower and free-standing bath.

Their elephant sanctuary, also on the reserve, offers ample opportunity to see elephants, as well as other wildlife. And a short interaction with the elephants is included in your stay. As African elephants are very rarely encountered outside the wild, it is a great joy to be able to enjoy such close company of these magnificent creatures.

All the suites were sited to maximise privacy through the use of existing trees. Other green initiatives include using ‘grey water’ systems, worm farms for bio-waste and solar water heaters. Plus they planted 50 indigenous trees and established a nursery to ensure the continued forestation of the reserve.
