AMBA Estate | Bandarawela

Amba Estate is a farmhouse, organic estate and social enterprise nestled in the Uva Highlands of Sri Lanka. Surrounded by 130 acres of tea fields, waterfalls, forests and mountains, it’s a serene retreat with some of the most beautiful views in the region and a rich array of experiences for curious and adventurous travellers.

Accommodation is simple but full of charm, with a choice of restored estate buildings offering a cosy, laid-back atmosphere that reflects the character of the estate. The original Farmhouse, built over 100 years ago, has four double or twin rooms, one single room and two shared bathrooms, while the neighbouring Linerooms – once tea workers’ quarters – offer three double or twin rooms with ensuite bathrooms. Just 200 metres from the main house, Clove Tree House (a 1930s planter’s bungalow) and Clove Tree Cottage (a newer annex) provide a handful of comfortable rooms and suites, all with ensuite bathrooms. Each property has its own dining and living area, along with breathtaking views across the valley.

The rooms are comfortable, not airconditioned but due to the elevation, fans are sufficient. Amba offers a rare sense of place – and staying here gives you the chance to slow down, disconnect and immerse yourself in a working estate. Please note that Amba does not hold a liquor licence, so we suggest guests bring their own alcohol to enjoy during their stay.

Food is freshly prepared by a team of local cooks – hearty, home-style vegetarian meals that make the most of the estate’s organic produce. Daily housekeeping is also provided.

Guests can explore a network of walking trails across the estate, from gentle paths through tea fields to more challenging hikes such as the climb to Ella Rock or the descent to Ravana-Ella Waterfalls and its secluded natural pools. A favourite Travel Gallery experience is to rise before dawn for a short walk to a nearby mountain top, where the sunrise reveals vast views stretching from the Uva hills to the Indian Ocean.

Amba is also home to a fascinating artisanal tea project. Join one of the estate managers to learn how their small-batch, hand-rolled teas are made, and to sample the distinctive flavours created through different production methods.

As a social enterprise, Amba is committed to supporting the local community, maximising local employment and income while protecting the surrounding environment. A stay here offers not just rest and reconnection – but the chance to contribute to a meaningful and sustainable initiative.

Galle Face Hotel | Colombo

The Classic Galle Face Hotel in Colombo was established in 1864 and won prestigious award as one of Asia's finest hotels. It is the oldest hotel east of the Suez. A masterpiece of Victorian architecture retains the dignified atmosphere that gave it such fame in the colonial age. The hotel has a superb location overlooking the Galle Face Green and the Indian Ocean. The Regency wing (also known as the Galle Face Regency) was renovated a number of years ago and between 2014-16 the hotel’s classic wing underwent extensive refurbishment to reinstate the hotel to its former glory. A wide selection of restaurants and bars is headed by the Verandah Restaurant (western and Oriental cuisine), the Seaspray fish restaurant and the 1864 Room, a sedate fine-dining restaurant.
