AMBA Estate | Bandarawela

Amba Estate is a farm house, organic estate and social enterprise in the Uva Highlands of Sri Lanka.  With excellent accommodation, offering stunning views over the valley, Amba has an abundance of unique experiences in one of the most beautiful spots in Sri Lanka, surrounded by 130 acres of mountains, waterfalls, caves, forests and tea fields.

Amba's old estate farmhouse, the original estate line-rooms (tea-workers’ quarters) and 2 neighbouring bungalow are operated as a full-service guest-house, offering guests the opportunity to learn more about organic farming and artisanal tea-making.

Built 100 years ago by one of the first local families to develop their own tea estate, Amba’s original Farmhouse exudes rustic charm and cosy character.  The farmhouse has 4 double or twin rooms, 1 single room, and two shared bathrooms.

The Amba Linerooms, next door to the Farmhouse, have 3 double or twin rooms, each with ensuite bathrooms. Clove Tree House, a 1930s planter’s bungalow about 200 metres from the Amba farmhouse, has 1 family suite, 1 double room and 1 twin room, all with ensuite bathrooms. Clove Tree Cottage, a newer annex next to Clove Tree House, has 1 family suite and 1 triple room, both with ensuite bathrooms.

All the houses have their own kitchens, living and dining areas, and spectacular views across the valley. Full-time staff prepare delicious vegetarian meals in each house, using much of the farms organic produce and provide daily house-keeping.

There are a number of beautiful walking trails available for guests in addition to farm tours and abundance of wildlife. We highly recommend the fascinating tea tasting experience with one of their estate managers. Their expertise gives you the opportunity to learn about how their artisanal tea is grown and how the different methods of hand production produce each of the unique flavours.

Among the walking trails, a 2-hour hike climbs more than 400 meters to the top of Ella Rock. From there you can return to the farm or hike down to Ella town on the other side. A 30-minute round trip walk leads down to the abandoned hydro-powered tea factory and the secluded swimming pools and spectacular rock shelves you can bathe in at the top of the Ravana-Ella Waterfalls – a truly magical experience.

A Travel Gallery special recommendation is wake up before dawn to take a short walk to mountain top 15 minutes away from the main house where you can watch the sun rise over the vast plains that emerge from the edge of the Uva mountains towards the Indian Ocean.

Amba Estate’s goal is to maximise local employment and incomes, while preserving and restoring the natural environment.  They work with the local community to produce and export a range of artisanal products, and they offer guests the opportunity to relax and recharge.

Galle Face Hotel | Colombo

The Classic Galle Face Hotel in Colombo was established in 1864 and won prestigious award as one of Asia's finest hotels. It is the oldest hotel east of the Suez. A masterpiece of Victorian architecture retains the dignified atmosphere that gave it such fame in the colonial age. The hotel has a superb location overlooking the Galle Face Green and the Indian Ocean. The Regency wing (also known as the Galle Face Regency) was renovated a number of years ago and between 2014-16 the hotel’s classic wing underwent extensive refurbishment to reinstate the hotel to its former glory. A wide selection of restaurants and bars is headed by the Verandah Restaurant (western and Oriental cuisine), the Seaspray fish restaurant and the 1864 Room, a sedate fine-dining restaurant. The tranquillity of a pre-dinner drink on the verandah, as the sun retreats, has charmed many for more than a century, whilst the The Barista Deli and Inn on the Green British pub, accessed from Galle Road, attract a younger crowd. There is a wine lounge with underground wine cellar (designed for connoisseur's of fine wines, cheeses and cigars), snooker room,
small museum and art gallery. Sports facilities are limited. For clients happy to stay in a larger hotel, The Galle Face hotel today provides a perfect place to stay for a short visit to Colombo.
