The 19 large luxurious Pool Villas (75 sq meters) are set in 58 acres of paddy land and lakes and each includes a separate living area and luxury bathroom. To the outside there is a private courtyard and plunge pool. In 2019 an addtonal 5 Deluxe Pool Villas were added which have an additional dining are and a good sized private swimming pool.

In our opinion this is a great hotel and the accommodation is of a very high standard - the best in the Cultural Triangle. The villas provide good privacy and the Nikawena Villa, with 2 bedrooms is perfect for families and has the benefit of an oversized private plunge pool. There’s more to Ulagalla than just the view. Guests can wake up with the dawn chorus and take a guided walk around the estate and beyond. This leisurely 90-minute ramble includes a walk along the banks of Wannemaduwa ‘tank’, a traditional irrigation reservoir built to a design over two thousand years old.
Guests can take to the waters of Wannemaduwa tank in a kayak at dawn or dusk to experience the wildlife of the forest at its most active. Paddle quietly with friendly staff guide through floating islands of lotus blossom, stands of water bird-haunted reeds and overhanging boughs. The soft light of the rising or setting sun turns the air to honey and touches the dragonflies’ wings with gold.
Guests discover the elegant simplicity of Sri Lankan village life on this two-hour guided bicycle excursion, while keeping an eye open for exotic birds and small wildlife along the route. The destination is Veheragalla, a traditional farming village not far from the hotel. Guests will meet the inhabitants and be welcomed at the home of the village headman.
For the nature-loving foodie, guests can enjoy a guided tour of the organic herb and vegetable garden, during which they can hand-pick fresh, juicy ingredients for their lunch. Ending the walk with a visit to the traditional health kitchen, where the herbs and vegetables they’ve selected will be transformed into delicious Sri Lankan dishes.
Surrounded by green woods at Ulagalla, guests may want to try their hand at being Robin Hood. If so, the hotel can supply the equipment – bows, arrows and targets – as well as expert advice and even some friendly competition from the recreational assistants, who are graduates of the Colombo School of Archery. Or guests can engage in a tournament with their own party or fellow guests.
An expert visiting instructor conducts programmes for guests on request. Sessions vary in duration and intensity depending on guests' preference.
This very special excursion only takes place on Poya (full moon) days, which are holy to the Buddhists of Sri Lanka. A Buddhist guide will take guests to Veheragala Temple, where they can observe and participate in the traditional rites of Sinhalese Buddhism such as lamp lighting, circling the stupa and offering floral tributes.
Kite making and kite-flying are popular traditional pastimes all over South Asia. Guests can come along and learn how to make, launch and fly a bamboo and paper kite of classic Sri Lankan design, such as a nye sarungala.
Guests can treat themselves to a remarkable dining experience at the Liyawela restaurant at Ulagalla Resort, one of the finest of many Anuradhapura restaurants. Adorned with traditional furnishing that emphasizes multiple shades of brown, this cosy dining venue offers guests the best of Sri Lankan cuisine along with Eastern and Western dishes as well as fusion fare. The restaurant’s upper deck affords captivating views of the lush green vegetation that surrounds, where guests can sample a delectable meal while letting the cool breeze soothe them.
Tucked away in the lush green vegetation of the tropical jungle, Ulagalla offers a unique dining experience to its guests who fancy private dining in Sri Lanka. A table set for two in the middle of a peaceful kamatha, offers the perfect ambience to savour the authentic flavours of Sri Lankan cuisine or barbeque. If guests are looking for a more intimate dining experience, to spend a romantic evening followed by a candlelit dinner, the observation deck at Ulagalla sets the perfect mood. Alternatively, guests can dine under the stars on their private terrace overlooking the panoramic green paradise or by the side of their tranquil pool.

Rosyth Tea Factory (10 minutes) Just a few minutes’ walk from the house is the local tea factory & whilst not part of our estate, guests are welcome to visit the factory and understand how the tea we grow, is turned into fine tea for export. Many concur that Sri Lanka Tea is the best in the world. The tea grown at Rosyth is particularly popular in the Middle East. The old orthodox method of tea processing produces the liquor of the Unbroken Flower Orange Pekoe in its most superior grade. You will have the opportunity to purchase tea at the factory to take home.
A short tour will take through the factory where the fresh leaves are dried by fans on withering troughs to reduce the moisture content and then rolled and pressed to express the juices which coat the leaves. The leaves are then left to ferment in humidity. The final process dries the leaves and then the leaves are graded. Unbroken being the best quality, fannings and the dust which is the quality used in tea bags.

In Sri Lanka’s deep south, the rustic farming villages round Tissamaharama are divided from the teeming animal and bird life of Yala – Sri Lanka’s oldest and second-largest natural reserve – by a belt of semi-protected jungle running down to the sea. For centuries, people here have farmed small clearings in the jungle called chena, sleeping beside their crops in modest huts to protect them from hungry elephants. Here today, nestled among dunes and trees at the ocean’s edge, you will find Chena Huts, a Yala Hotel, which is the latest addition to Uga Escapes’ portfolio of luxury boutique hotels. Overlooking a beach where sea-turtles come to lay eggs by moonlight and elephants wander down from the nearby jungle to play in the surf, Chena Huts is fringed on one landward side by the tropical jungle and on the other by a saline lake where ibises, painted storks and even flamingos may be seen, wading in the shallows. For guests at Chena Huts, easy access to these natural wonders involves no compromise with comfort or good taste. At this small, select property, the ‘huts’ are in fact luxurious detached, private pavilions offering fine views of the surrounding wilderness and seascape. Guests enjoy fine dining at the Basses restaurant and sip cocktails at the Bar -. A swimming pool and other amenities for recreation are available. Yet one need to take only a short walk in any direction to find oneself surrounded by unspoilt nature, and only a short journey to the national park.
Chena Huts offers access to Sri Lanka’s largest and oldest national park which has the highest leopard population density in the world. Yala stuns visitors with its variety of biomes –monsoon, semi-deciduous and thorn forests, grasslands, freshwater, marine wetlands and sandy beaches where the only footprints you will see belong to foraging birds and animals. Broadcasting 44 different resident mammal species and dozens of reptile species including turtles, crocodiles, flying snakes and elegant fan-throated lizards. Yala has no less than 215 resident and migrant birds, of which the flamboyant peacock is one of the most common. Excursions throughout the region can be arranged based on request. Explore Sri Lankan wildlife and nature at Chena Huts, making the most of your escape even more rewarding!
Basses
Taking its name from the nearby reefs and lighthouse, famed in seafaring history and lore, the Basses restaurant is decorated to an appropriately nautical theme and features urbane fine dining in a spectacularly out-of-the-way location. Should you wish to take your meals under the stars of by the beach near a bonfire these options are also available. With a captivating beach front and an enchanting lagoon bordering the property, Chena Huts, being amongst the most unique Yala boutique hotels, has plenty of unique locations to dine in private.
