Mandara Huts – First Overnight Stop on Kilimanjaro’s Marangu Route (2,700 m)
Mandara Huts is ideally located at an elevation of around 2,700 metres on the Marangu Route of Mount Kilimanjaro, making it the first overnight camp for trekkers ascending via this classic trail. Nestled in the lush montane rainforest, the site offers a welcoming introduction to life on the mountain, with cool, misty air and the sounds of birds and monkeys in the surrounding trees.
Accommodation is in a series of dormitory-style A-frame huts, each fitted with mattresses and pillows so climbers only need to bring their sleeping bags. These solid wooden huts provide reliable shelter from Kilimanjaro’s often changeable weather and give Mandara its distinctive “alpine village” feel. Facilities include a communal dining hut, shared washrooms and toilets, and access to fresh water sourced from nearby springs (treated by your trekking crew).
Many trekkers also take a short acclimatisation walk from Mandara up to Maundi Crater, where, on clear days, you can enjoy panoramic views across the plains and towards Mount Meru – a perfect first taste of the landscapes that await higher on Kilimanjaro.
