Giraffe Manor | Nairobi

Giraffe Manor is an exclusive boutique hotel, set in 12 acres of private land within 140 acres of indigenous forest in a peaceful suburb of Nairobi. This elegant hotel is famous for its resident herd of Rothschild's giraffes who visit morning and evening, poking their long necks into the windows in the hope of a treat. It is the only place in the world where you can enjoy the breath taking experience of hand feeding and photographing giraffes over the breakfast table and at afternoon tea. The Rothschild’s species of giraffe was once highly endangered, but Giraffe Manor has long been part of a breeding programme which has successfully grown their numbers in the wild. With its stately façade, elegant interiors, green gardens, sunny terraces and delightful courtyards, Giraffe Manor offers a unique blend of world class hospitality with bucket-list giraffe experiences unlike anywhere else. A stunning swimming pool, spa rooms, hot tub, steam rooms, sauna and gym are available to guests at The Retreat which right next door on the same forested giraffe sanctuary.

Ol Donyo Lodge | Chyulu Hills National Park

Ol Donyo Lodge is the only lodge in East Africa to be awarded the prestigious Relais & Chateau status. There are awesome views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Ol Donyo lies in the foothills of the Chyulu Range. The Chyulu Hills are the youngest range of volcanic hills in Africa, the last volcanic activity having only happened about 600 years ago. They are situated halfway between Tsavo and Amboseli National Parks on a concession of 300,000 acres of communally owned Maasai land, known as Mbirikani Group Ranch, which is also part of the Amboseli eco-system. The open plains, rolling hills and the snow topped Mount Kilimanjaro invoke images of Africa as it was in the earlier part of the last century. Wildlife and Maasai herdsmen live, as nature determined they should, in this unspoiled corner of Kenya.

Ol Donyo Lodge consists of ten expansive guest suites in six stand-alone villas. No two are the same design - each suite and villa is designed and positioned slightly differently but all have a dramatic view of the plains and Mt. Kilimanjaro in the distance. The décor is luxurious and opulent, while still retaining the atmosphere and sense of place that is an essential ingredient of an outstanding bush lodge. Art from around Africa coupled with the photography of Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher create a commanding space under the high thatch roofs surrounded by cool stonewalls. The design is contemporary and yet traditional.

Each suite has a rooftop “star-bed” accessed from the verandah via a winding stone staircase. The “star-beds” are a fabulous sleep-out option, with utter privacy and all the amenities of the suite just below. Each suite also has a lounge, verandah, indoor and outdoor showers, double washbasins, flush toilet and bath. All but two of the suites have their own private pool(s).

Guests can plan their day choosing from a wide range of guided activities such as game drives in open 4x4 Land Rovers, walking safaris, horse riding, hiking in the mountain range or cultural exposure to traditional Maasai customs.

Arrangements include:

·         All meals and snacks

·         Soft drinks, beers, house wines

·         Laundry

·         Shared game drives – day and night

·         Guided walks

·         Horse rides

·         Maasai cultural visits

Sirikoi Lodge | Lewa Conservancy

Lewa Conservancy has its roots in the Craig family who have farmed here with the philosophy that there would always be room for wildlife.  As the plight of the black rhino became desperate in Africa, the ranch was converted into a rhino sanctuary and today Lewa spans 61,000 acres, and is home to over 11 percent of Kenya’s black rhino population, and over 14 percent of Kenya’s white rhino population and the world’s largest single population of Grevy’s zebra.

With its proven track record, the Lewa model of community-based conservation development is being spearheaded across northern Kenya, and emulated by other East African conservation organizations.  In late June 2013, the World Heritage Committee extended the boundaries of the Mount Kenya World Heritage Site to include Lewa and Ngare Ndare Forest.

Sirikoi is on par with Sabora in Singita Grumeti Reserves in Tanzania, with the added attraction of the Cottage, which is the best accommodation, and the House which is more private and self contained.

-          Managed by the Roberts Family (Andrew and Caragh).

-          Set overlooking an Oasis which attracts prolific game, including the Big 5. The game is very close to you at meal times, which are taken on the lawns under trees bordering the Oasis.

-          Despite the proximity of so much wildlife, Sirikoi is not fenced, although there is an unobtrusive elephant wire.

-          In the Main Area there is a lounge (luxurious and huge), bar and dining tables, inside and al fresco

-          Communal dining, with separate tables an option.

-          Large pool on lawns with sunbeds

-          Boutique

-          Small spa (extra cost)

-          Free Wifi, with reception in most areas

-          Solar energy and 24/7 power and hot water

-          Game drives by open sided vehicles

-          Huge and impressive fruit and vegetable garden

-          The airstrip is within a 3o minutes game drive.

-          4 luxury spacious tents on platforms with a private verandah overlooking the Oasis. Each tent extends to a permanent solid built and very spacious bathroom. Victorian stand alone bath tub and a very efficient walk-in shower. His and Hers basins, and a wc.

-          Each tent comes with a fireplace, and the fire is lit each evening, unless you request it not to be.

-          Safe

-          There are also 2 fly tents with the same facilities, except that the bathroom is not permanent. These are often used as guides’ tents.

-          The 2 bedroom cottage has a very large lounge, with TV and DVD, fireplace and a kitchen, and the option to dine on the terrace.

-          This cottage is on the opposite side of the main lounge, bar and dining area to the tents.

-          Sirikoi House is beyond the Cottage, and the location is quite private and is tucked away in a quiet corner.

-          3 bedrooms, all similar with en suite, bath tub with hand shower, walk-in shower, His and Hers basins, wc. There is also an outside shower.

-          Large lounge (No TV but does have DVDs), private bar stocked according to preferences, verandah leading to lawns and overlooking the oasis and game.

-          Fully fitted kitchen and private dining.

-          Airstrip 30 minutes

Ole Sereni | Nairobi

Ole-Sereni means ‘place of tranquillity’ in Maasai language. It offers its guests the comforts and services of a city hotel while bordering the wilds of the Nairobi National Park. Ole-Sereni Hotel captures the essence of Nairobi which is the only city in the world that boasts a natural game park within its precincts. This is evident as guests view animals at the waterhole in the park from the restaurants, bars, swimming pool, selected rooms and parts of the hotel.

For those who want the best of both worlds, Ole – Sereni is the perfect answer. As ‘the city hotel by the game park’, it offers guests a chance to view game only 15 minutes after leaving the airport. Its location between the airport and the city means that guests who stay there are able to avoid many of the challenges set by the choked Nairobi traffic.

Ole-Sereni has 134 tastefully decorated rooms. All the rooms have a twin or double bed and are equipped with private bath/ shower, air conditioning, safe, mini bar, tea/coffee making facilities, hairdryer, satellite TV, internet and direct dial telephone. On the 4th floor, overlooking the waterhole and skyline of Nairobi is the high-class Eagles Bar & Grillroom with its own Club Bar and evening entertainment. The main restaurant, the Big Five, also with its own bar, boasts an ‘open show’ kitchen offering five types of cuisine: Chinese, Indian, Italian, Mongolian and Grills.
