Discover the rich diversity of the Cape Floral Kingdom’s Fynbos on Table Mountain with Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel
The Cape Floral Kingdom is one of only six Floral Kingdoms in the world and is geographically by far the smallest, yet the richest, most diverse of these plant kingdoms. It is widely recognised as one of the most special places for plants in the world in terms of the number of endemic species. Fynbos (fine bush), the indigenous mountain vegetation, forms a major part of this Cape Floral Kingdom.
Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel offers guests a unique opportunity to discover the remarkable diversity of the Fynbos of the Cape Floral Kingdom on Table Mountain, one of the world’s Seven Wonders of Nature. Enjoy a ramble along the lower slopes of Table Mountain with a dramatic outlook over Camps Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, with an expert mountain and Fynbos guide who will share interesting stories about the “Big Five of Fynbos”– the plant families of Proteas, Ericas, Restios, Bulbs (Irises and Lilies) and Daisies – and uncover many aspects of the natural and cultural history of the Cape and Table Mountain. There will also be plenty of opportunity to photograph plants and flowers encountered during the walk.
The Fynbos Sunset Walks will take place in the late afternoon so guests can enjoy sundowners from an elevated position on the mountainside, watching the sun sink below the horizon of the Atlantic Ocean, a typical Capetonian activity. The tour will last two and a half hours in total which gives guests the opportunity to enjoy a day out and about and still be back in time to appreciate this lovely early evening experience.
Booking is recommended when making a room reservation, alternatively, guests may book this tour with the hotel’s concierge department. Bookings are subject to availability and a 24-hour notice period is preferred.
The cost of the Fynbos Sunset Walk on Table Mountain is ZAR 1 600 per person for two guests, ZAR 875 per person for three to five guests and ZAR 650 per person for six to eight guests.

Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel offers guests the opportunity to visit one of South Africa’s most successful and entrepreneurial township farms in Khayelitsha – Abalimi Bezekhaya’s* vegetable garden called Moya we Khaya (spirit of home).
The trip starts with a guided tour past many of the well-known townships such as Langa and Gugulethu, learning about township life, before arriving at Mama Kaba’s beautiful organic vegetable garden, Moya we Khaya. Guests will meet Mama Kaba and enjoy a cup of tea with her as they hear her story about how she started with a small neglected piece of municipal land and how, against all odds, her determination to transform people’s lives turned one small farm into one of the most successful gardening and farming initiatives in the country. For example, Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel has been buying vegetables, herbs and salads from Abalimi Bezekhaya’s Harvest of Hope programme for the past four years, and the chefs are always wanting more produce from them. There is even a dedicated dish on the hotel menu – the Abalimi Bezekhaya Beetroot and Kale salad - which intrigues most diners.
After tea, visitors can take a walk through the garden with Mama Kaba and pick their preferred produce for their basket, including firm deep-purple eggplant, tasty herbs, sweet tomatoes, luscious fennel, fat carrots, juicy beetroot, everything seasonal, all plump and bursting with freshness. Upon returning to Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel, the hotel’s creative chefs will weave their magic and transform the ingredients into the most authentic farm to fork salad.
The tour will leave from the hotel at 09h30 in the morning and guests should be back around 12h30 in time to enjoy their super farm fresh salad.
The cost of the tour is R1 500 per person for two guests and R875 per person for a group of four guests. This includes a donation of compost or seedlings for the Moya we Khaya garden as well as the farm fresh salad for lunch.
Booking is recommended when making a room reservation, alternatively guests may book this tour with the hotel’s concierge department. Please note that this is subject to availability and a 48-hour notice period is preferred. For further enquiries, please would you contact Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel reservations on +27 21 483-1000 or e-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org, alternatively contact Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel concierge on +27 21 483-1000 or e-mail: email@example.com
A zippy one-hour walking tour of ten trees that live in the hotels’ expansive gardens will reveal many fascinating threads of Cape Town’s history. Trees such as the 80 Canary Island Palms that line the driveway entrance or the nearly 200 year old wild Olive Tree have borne silent witness to the colourful ebb and flow of historic events at the Cape and indeed of this historical 116 year old hotel.
Bookings essential at the hotel Concierge and cost is ZAR 300 per person.
We offer guests the opportunity to have their own portrait, or that of their loved ones, painted by artist-in-residence Cyril Coetzee. Not only will an oil portrait rendition be so much better than a photograph, it would also be a treasured artwork painted by none other than the man who was Nelson Mandela’s highly respected portrait specialist. Cyril is also offering oil painting classes at the hotel for guests who would like to enjoy and learn more about this relaxing and rewarding activity. Lessons are offered for one person up to eight and all levels of expertise are accommodated. The easels, canvas and paint materials will all be provided.
Get a taste of the good life on a tour of Cape Town’s internationally acclaimed winelands. Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel offers half- and full-day tours to the major wine trails, as well as specific red, white and Cap Classique tours.
From 60s-inspired furniture to home-grown wine, Kloof Street offers an inspiring range of shops. In the historic De Waterkant district upmarket shops sell authentic textiles, jewellery, ceramics, tribal arts and contemporary crafts.
An all-in-one cultural experience, starting with a tour of the Gold Museum, which explores the ancient relationship between gold and the African continent. Afterwards, enjoy a drumming experience with an expert and a live performance before sitting down to a 15-course meal of Cape Malay and African cuisine.
