The Retreat by Heaven | Kigali

Town & Country and The New York Times describe The Retreat in Kigali as one of the top boutique hotels of the world. The American owners of Heaven Restaurant created The Retreat, a 20-room luxury boutique hotel located on a tree-lined residential street steps from Kigali City Center and 20 minutes from the airport. 8 new luxury pool villas are now open where King Charles III stayed in June 2022! The Retreat is Kigali’s first eco-friendly resort and features solar electricity, organic toiletries, locally-crafted furniture from a Tanzanian sustainable teak farm, outdoor showers, private terraces, a yoga and meditation deck, spa, large heated saltwater swimming pool with hot tub and diving rocks, and an open-air fitness center. Fusion Restaurant and its Swahili-inspired bar, located at The Retreat, offers delicious farm-to-table international cuisine, while Heaven Restaurant (reached through The Retreat’s “Stairway to Heaven”) offers an innovative modern African menu. The Retreat is the perfect choice to host guests for first 2 nights or several days as visitors enjoy innovative, curated cultural experiences and exciting activities onsite and around Kigali. From public health to hospitality, co-owners Alissa & Josh Ruxin created Heaven Restaurant in 2008 to provide jobs and vocational training in hospitality, to date, Heaven and The Retreat have trained over 3,000 Rwandans.

Mara Plains Camp | Olare Motorogi Conservancy

Mara Plains Camp is a one-of-a-kind camp located in the private 13,300-hectare Olare Motorogi Conservancy, just on the Maasai Mara National Reserve’s northern boundary. This intimate camp, one of Kenya’s only three Relais & Chateaux properties, blends the finest in wildlife viewing with the absolute best of safari hospitality and guiding. No other camp offers the extensive traversing area of Mara Plains Camp, with access to a total of 40,000 hectares of private conservancy land as well as the world-renowned Maasai Mara, home to the Great Migration. Olare Motorogi Conservancy has an incredible density of big cats and only one guest bed per 140 hectares, leaving the land unadulterated for the wildlife to roam and thrive. By day and night, the camp is a sanctuary for resident species, including many of the Maasai Mara’s 300 bird species. After dark, larger mammals frequent the camp and Maasai warriors escort guests to and from their rooms. Hippos snorting and leopards barking often provide the night’s chorus. Each of the suites has deep canvas canopied ceilings, rough-hewn wood floors and accents of East Africa’s rich safari history. Each guest suites comes with high-quality binoculars and a professional camera and lenses.

Lewa Wilderness | Lewa Conservancy

Lewa Wilderness is one of Kenya’s oldest private safari experiences. For fifty years guests have been coming to this remarkable region to be part of an adventure like no other. Those five decades have seen that passion passed down through the Craig family who proudly continue to run Lewa Wilderness today.

Guests can relax by the fire in the cozy sitting room and share meals around a long banquet table in the open-air dining room. Natural springs, home-raised livestock, and a 5-acre organic garden are transformed by skilled chefs into incredible, healthy and delicious food.

There are nine comfortable thatched cottages with spacious ensuite bathrooms, fireplaces in the sitting areas and verandas.

Activities to take part in while staying at Lewa Wilderness include game drives, game walks, camel safaris, horseback riding, and day visits to the Ngare Ndare forest. Scenic flights are also available with Air Wilderness!

There is a very good chance of seeing all of the “Big Five” and Lewa is one of the only game parks where visitors are almost guaranteed to see the endangered black and white rhinos.
