Nayara Alto Atacama | San Pedro de Atacama
The luxurious Alto Atacama is blessed with a most spectacular and private location, tucked away in a valley of serene beauty, it blends into its surroundings in the shadow of the Pukará de Quitor ruins and with the San Pedro River winding its way discreetly alongside. The perfect base for exploring the desert, for cultural encounters, or simply absorbing the breathtaking landscape.
Rooms are spacious and comfortable, all of them well equipped to soothe your body after an action-packed day. The decoration is simple yet elegant, incorporating local crafts. All rooms have a private terrace where you can enjoy the colours of the valley, take a nap, read a book or simply relax at the sight of the hotel gardens.
The definition of peacefulness acquires a new meaning after a couple of nights here. The Catarpe Valley embraces Alto Atacama with silence; let silence embrace you.
The gardens of Alto Atacama, are a microcosm of the desert. Every line etched during the course of the project, using Andean materials and local hand labour; every plant was to be sown using native seeds collected within the altiplano area and grown in local soil. All material gathering was a daunting task as everything was gathered by hand and stones were to be transported from their settings on donkeys and then on to trucks. Even the tiles and stone bricks were hand carved on site to make the Alto Atacama Andean Park a true testament to the cultures that once walked this desert.
There are 10 of these rooms located in the gardens of Nayara Alto Atacama. The Suites Tilo, “Laguna” in Kunza language, are our top-of-the-line accommodations. Every elegant and spacious Suite looks out over the sublime tranquility of the oasis into the Salt Mountain Range and the Andean hills. Touches of the local culture are everywhere, from handwoven throws to macrame hangings, complementing the natural fabric palette of the suite. An outdoor rain shower to wash under the night glowing stars elevates the wilderness experience and adds to the privacy.
Each room has an open view of the lagoon and the Catarpe Valley. These rooms are 70 m2 and feature a private terrace, private patio with an additional outdoor shower, a safe, and a mini bar.
There are 27 Catarpe rooms located in the gardens of Nayara Alto Atacama.
Spacious and adorned with local natural materials, the Catarpe rooms reflect the brilliant colors of the neighboring Atacama desert. From inside you can hear the sounds of the San Pedro River flowing down from the Andes Mountains to the valley; and as you step out to the terrace, you enjoy sweeping views of the Salt Mountain Range. The desert sun is filtered by the deep roof giving the rooms an ideal temperature and luminosity, from the moment you wake up until you go to sleep.
These rooms are slightly larger than the Quitors, and have a more private terrace offering an uninterrupted view of the Cordillera de la Sal Range and the Catarpe Valley. Each room is 51 m2 and features a safe and mini bar.
There are 5 Quitor rooms which are all close to the common areas. The view from the private terrace looks out on to the garden area of the hotel, framed against the Cordillera de la Sal in the background. Each room is 50 m2 with one room being wheelchair accessible. The rooms contain a safe and a mini bar.

At Alto Atacama, guests are offered the choice between 2 half day or one full day tour each day. Below a (non-exhaustive) list of examples, showing you the wide range of activities that are offered.
Excursions by vehicle
- Likanantai Culture Tour: After a short walk from the hotel to Pukara de Quitor, we will drive to the historic old town of San Pedro. There, we will stroll around the picturesque town, visit the church and the highly respected museum. We then drive to the archealogical ruins of Tulor – a 2800 year old settlement – visiting a variety of ancient villages along the way.
- Sunset at Moon Valley: A 20 minute drive brings us to the spectacular Moon Valley. This is one of the most famous national parks in Chile and for good reason. The enormous sand dunes and dramatic rock formations create a stunning lunar landscape born of land lifts and centuries of erosion. The sunsets here are extraordinary and no visit to San Pedro is complete without an trip to the Moon Valley to watch the sun go down.
- Tara Salt Flats: From the hotel, we drive towards the Andean cordillera. The journey takes us through the wonderful meadows of Quepiaco where you can also see the Pakana Monks, incredible rock formations created by years or erosion. We will have a buffet lunch at the salt flats while enjoying the local flora and fauna, before returning to the hotel.
Trekking
- Quezala Gorge: We drive south taking the east flank of the Atacama salt flat, the town of Talabre is where we start our trek. Located at the footsteps of the active Lascar volcano Talabre is a fine example of an altiplanic village, defying ages & ashes. The trek follows the river that carves the beaut i ful Quezala Gorge.
- Los Colorados: From the hotel, we take a short drive along the ancient road which crosses the Cordillera de la Sal. From here, we begin a delightful trek along the top of the cordillera which provides panaromic views of San Pedro, the oasis, the salt flats and the snowcapped Andean mountains. We descend via the dunes of Moon Valley.
Cycling
- Inca Pass: From Alto Atacama, we cycle up to the cordillera until we reach a old tunnel that cuts though the cordillera. The tunnel is an amazing feat of engineering built by the Chilean goverment early in the XX century to reduce travelling times from the Andes to the sea. We pass through the tunnel and return to the hotel via Mars Valley.
- Desert Valley: We cycle towards Mars Valley and climb up to the Cordillera viewpoint. From here, you can see across the oasis and the salt flats to the snowcapped Andes. On our way back to the hotel, we pass through the famous Moon Valley.
Ckelar Restaurant
At Nayara Alto Atacama we take the base of North Chilean food– corn, wheat and meat – and combine it with root vegetables, edible grasses and grains to offer a fresh, light and tasteful cuisine that goes hand-in-hand with the sublime terrain of the desert. Our cuisine will delight you with a menu of sophisticated techniques and delicious flavors.
Our gastronomy is deeply connected to the surroundings as most of our vegetables come from our Andean Garden. Whether you are a wine aficionado or a wine connoisseur you will enjoy Chile’s unique grapes and our collection of top-of-the-line local wines. Don't miss "Patasca", a dish native to the Atacama people, a hot soup or stew made of corn, potatoes, pork, beef, onions and white "Capia", a variety of corn unique to this region.

There are many different exploration possibilities within the Park, as diverse as their visitor’s preferences. Each itinerary is a unique experience and adventure, where every detail has its own charm. With over 40 explorations, we cover all areas in the Park either on foot, horseback, or by van. We provide our travelers the opportunity of discovering the landscape according to the choices they make daily. Our explorations, always led by a competent guide from our School of Guides, take place in groups of eight travelers at most and include walks towards crystal clear, woods of lenga trees, hiking to viewpoints and horseback riding through the Park’s pampas (grasslands) and rivers.
One of the most popular circuit is the mystic W that goes around the trails that surround the Paine Massif. This circuit requires at least five days for completion. Our explorations to the Torres base, the Grey glacier and the Valle del Francés (Frenchman’s Valley) follow part of this circuit. A good option is to combine some of these explorations with others to less familiar places within the Park, either walking or horseback riding.
Our walks have different length and difficulty levels. Those that take the full day give us the privilege of having lunch in the middle of nature, while those that take half a day allow us to come back to explora Patagonia to make a different exploration during the afternoon. Horseback riding are meant for beginners, advanced, and expert riders; therefore, there are no excuses for not living the Patagonian experience riding through the Park along our gauchos.
