Ngorongoro was an active volcano some eight million years ago whose cone collapsed, leaving a huge crater you see today. The Crater rim is wooded with mountain forest vegetation. Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority has recently taken total control of one of its trails within the Northern Highland Forest Reserve (NHFR). In the past, Gibbs Farm Lodge which is situated just few meters outside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority boundary to the south was responsible for organizing all the hikes into the forest.

08:30 or 12:00 Depart on your half day Lake Duluti Tour, including a boat ride just approximately 12km from Arusha town will bring you to hidden and nicely tucked away Crater Lake christened by the local Meru people ‘Duluti’. This is a “mysterious” freshwater wonder which is fed from underground streams inlet with no visible outlet. Quite small by any standards, almost the size of 2 football stadiums but this is nonetheless overridden by the charming and serene nature of the lake and its surrounding vegetation which almost envelope the lake in a circular manner. Clients will have the opportunity to do some canoeing and boat rides (included), bird watching, nature walks and fishing (excluded and need pre-arrangement).
08:30 or 12:00 depart on your half day Meserani Snake Park tour “The Snake Park is a special treasure of Arusha, a wonderful source of enjoyment and relaxation for locals and foreign visitors”, it is located 25km west of Arusha on the route to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro crater. Mount Meru is an active volcano of 4566 metres about 70 kilometres west of Mount Kilimanjaro and our trek is six days to reach the summit and come back. It is an excellent standalone trip or a prequel to climbing Kilimanjaro itself. Some people say that Meru is more challenging, and for sure it is much quieter. Therefore, there is a lot more wildlife to be seen and the sense of remoteness and solitude is much stronger than on the more famous peak nearby. The mountain is the centrepiece of Arusha National Park, and its fertile slopes rise above the surrounding savanna and support a forest that hosts diverse wildlife, including nearly 400 species of birds, and monkeys and leopards. Trekkers could see a lot of wildlife as they approach and climb the mountain. The ascent is quite steep in places and the route to the summit passes over several streams, moving through grasslands, tropical rainforest, alpine meadows, moorlands and desert uplands to snow and ice. The summit is reached by a narrow, barren ridge, which provides stunning views of the Ash Cone lying several hundred feet below in the crater
Depart from Hotel in Arusha, proceed to Tarangire National Park (2.5 drive), with picnic lunches, late afternoon drive to Arusha Tarangire meaning ‘river of warthogs’ is most famous for its elephants, birding and plenitudes of baobab trees. It’s authentic, untouched Africa at its best. Located just a few hours drive from the town of Arusha, Tarangire is a popular stop for people travelling through the northern safari circuit on their way to Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. The park extends into two gamecontrolled areas, and the wildlife is allowed to move freely throughout. Before the rains, droves of gazelles, wildebeests, zebras, and giraffes migrate to Tarangire National Park’s scrub plains where the last grazing land remains. Tarangire offers an unparalleled game viewing, and during the dry season elephants abound. Families of the pachyderms play around the ancient trunks of baobab trees and strip acacia bark from the thorn trees for their afternoon meal. Breathtaking views of the Maasai Steppe and the mountains in the south make a stopover at Tarangire a memorable experience.
Depart on your half day for Arusha National Park tour. The entrance gate leads into shadowy Montane Forest inhabited by inquisitive blue monkeys and colorful turacos and trogons – the only place on the northern safari circuit where the acrobatic black-and-white colobus monkey is easily seen. In the midst of the forest stands the spectacular Ngurdoto Crater, whose steep, rocky cliffs enclose a wide marshy floor dotted with herds of buffalo and warthog.
Giraffes glide across the grassy hills, between grazing zebra herds, while pairs of wide-eyed dik-dik dart into scrubby bush like overgrown hares on spindly legs. Leopards and spotted hyenas may be seen slinking around in the early morning and late afternoon. It is also at dusk and dawn that the veil of cloud on the eastern horizon is most likely to clear, revealing the majestic snow-capped peaks of Kilimanjaro, only 50km (30 miles) distant. But it is Kilimanjaro’s unassuming cousin, Mount Meru - the fifth highest in Africa at 4,566 meters (14,990 feet) – that dominates the park’s horizon. Its peaks and eastern foot slopes protected within the national park, Meru offers unparalleled views of its famous neighbor, while also forming a rewarding hiking destination in its own right.
