The charming boutique hotel you see today is an original Cape Edwardian mansion that was built in 1906 and has stood sentinel over Bantry Bay for more than 115 years. With only 13 bedrooms and two private villas, we excel at offering our guests a world-class level of service that is intuitive and understated.

Indigenous gardens and flowing water welcome guests to the entrance of Villa One with its breathtaking ocean views. The Ellerman House Spa and two deluxe spa bedrooms are located on this floor, with Villa One on the upper two levels accessed either by access controlled lift or staircase.
Level two (middle floor):
Sophisticated minimalist décor and a stunning collection of original art are key characteristics of the living areas, including a study, TV lounge, dining room, and entertainment area. The contemporary, stainless-steel kitchen has a separate scullery and a well-stocked cold room. A personal chef is on call to create breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner. The emphasis is on fresh, locally sourced, and seasonal ingredients. The chef can cater to any dietary needs or restrictions, food allergies, or children’s meals.
Level three:
The top floor has a reading room and three bedrooms, each with a spacious bathroom featuring infinity mirrors. The master bedroom (Aqua) has ocean views from the bedroom and bathroom. The second bedroom (Lilac) also has ocean views and a striking Balinese-style bathroom. The third bedroom (Yellow) faces the Twelve Apostles mountain range and is designed as a twin room with two single beds (all the rooms can be converted into king or twin beds on request). The art in this collection tells of the character of our land and the expression of our unique South African experience. From the time of the early pictorial historians of the midnineteenth century, such as Thomas Bowler, you acknowledge that this country has a flavour of its own – an essential nature that distinguishes it from other places. Communities in South Africa were extremely physically and culturally isolated from international centres of artistic innovation in the early 20th Century - a time before instantaneous globalisation of today. The Ellerman House collection traces the progress of pioneering work done in the 1930s by a generation of artists, such as Gregoire Boonzaaier, Maggie Laubser and Irma Stern, who were members of The New Group. Progressive identification by artists, such as Walter Battiss and Alexis Preller, with the essential nature of the land and its people - its Africanism, further reinforced the unique qualities of this land. The emergence of black pioneering artist like Gerard Sekoto and George Pemba began a process of cultural integration of the country’s ethnic communities into a unified South African art. In the Ellerman House Contemporary Gallery, an eclectic, outspoken and energetic generation of current artists such as Benon Lutaaya, Heidi Fourie & Blessing Ngobeni are pushing the boundaries of the ordinary in order to create work that explores relevant issues in post-modern South African society. The Collection records the spirit of the times and the development of art and culture in South Africa. Here at Mont Rochelle wine tasting isn’t just a special event – it’s an everyday occurrence. Wine tastings can be organised in a variety of locations, including in Miko Restaurant, at our bar, at the
Country Kitchen and in our wine cellar (as you might expect!).
The 150 year old wine cellar was previously used as a fruit packing shed for the early settlers. Since being converted to a traditional wine cellar Mont Rochelle can now process close to 150 tons of grapes in a season, and these smaller volumes afford more concentration on quality rather than quantity. Stainless steel tanks aid in the making of the crisp clean whites, while barrels are favoured for the red wine making. Wines are available to purchase.

Premium Winery Tours are also available on a Monday / Wednesday / Friday at 11h00 with Mont Rochelle’s very own Wine Maker. This is a true winery experience lasting approximately 20 minutes where you’ll be taken around Mont Rochelle’s winery and cellar, ending with a Wine tasting (pre-booking required)
Take a dip and relax in the main outdoor heated swimming pool at Mont Rochelle - there are some fantastic views of the Franschhoek Mountains. Bar service is available around the pool and fresh pool towels are available.
What could be more relaxing than a spa treatment during your stay? Mont Rochelle has two dedicated spa treatment rooms as well as a Hammam. We use the eco-friendly Africology ‘Authentic’ range of products which are made from 100% essential oils and natural plant extracts. Resident guests are welcome to make use of the Hammam at their leisure as long as it’s not in use for a scheduled treatment.
There are some wonderful routes that make it easy to explore the surrounding area on bike. We can arrange rentals with a local company, just let us know and we can book these for you.
Enjoy a hike through the hills, valleys and vineyards surrounding the hotel, as well as in local reserves. The Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve on the opposite side of the valley offers superb views of
the wine valley and on a clear day you can even see Table Mountain and the ocean! The walks vary in length from 3 to 8 hours and are of moderate intensity. One will need to acquire a 1 day permit that
costs R30 per person and a map that costs R15. Guests are welcome to take walks through the farm and the only request is that you stay on the walkways, thus preserving the fragile vines that produce our splendid wines.
A great way to discover the Franschhoek Valley is by the famous wine tram! This is a hop-on, hop-off service offering picturesque vineyards, beautiful scenery, fine wines, and world class cuisine as you travel. Here guests will have the chance to visit some of South Africa’s oldest and most distinguished wine estates travelling on an open air tram. Mont Rochelle is a stop on one of the Wine Tram Routes, so guests can book the other route to sample more of the area’s vineyards.
MIKO is our flagship restaurant with impeccable 180-degree views over the Franschhoek valley and a stunning terrace surrounded by glass doors, giving guests the feeling of an alfresco dining experience all year round. Sculpted deep into the natural landscape, Earth Lodge takes its cue from nature – textures, colours, light, space all reflecting the lodge’s surrounding bushveld. The renowned Amber Suite has been transformed into a stunning private Villa, tucked at the edge of Earth Lodge in the heart of the bushveld. One of the largest in the Sabi Sabi collection, the spacious 240m2 villa with two bedrooms and two bathrooms is perfect for families and friends, comfortably accommodating four guests, with a fifth able to be hosted upon request.
The unveiling of the Amber Villa marks the final phase of renovation of the Earth Lodge suites. Drawing inspiration from the luxury suites, Sabi Sabi was delighted to work once again with Dakota Designs, to curate each and every detail to reflect the bush environment.
The living area is designed for complete relaxation, with bespoke decorative pieces including the daybed which may be easily converted into an additional single bed, accommodating more family members.
Large windows and doors flood the room with light and encourage free movement out to the terrace lounge. Here, timber fans gently rotate above oversized couches and leather hanging sling chairs for a shaded retreat. A shimmering plunge pool is refreshing for guests – and on occasion wildlife.
In the main bedroom suite, with its iconic, original carved Matumi headboard, the bed has been positioned to capture the very best bush views in the utmost comfort. A lounge nook and dressing table sit adjacent to a generous dressing room, which leads to a small, private fitness area with treadmill, light weights and spinning bike.
Flow from the bedroom into the master en-suite, with a freestanding bath and double shower with walls cladded in earthy hues and copper accents.
The second bedroom with twin beds comfortably accommodates two people and includes a dressing and vanity area, as well as direct access to the outdoor lounge. An adjacent second bathroom is fitted with Kiaat timber vanities and polished stone basins beautifully contrast against the textured walls.

A walking safari with your rangers is optional and takes place after breakfast, with your ranger.
We offer a Community Tour, available to Sabi Sabi guests after breakfast each day. This is to be pre-booked at an additional charge, and these funds are invested back into the community.
The tour focuses on an authentic experience, and you will have the chance to view life from the perspective of our staff, as the majority of our staff are from the local communities of Lillydale, Justicia and Huntington.
