Erar Community Guesthouse | Tigray Region

These red sandstone mountains are home to a number of less known rock churches. The communities own and operate simple guesthouses and receive 55% of the income (ex VAT) for their services. Guests are guided through the mountains by specially trained guides from Adigrat, with their bags carried on donkeys.

Each guesthouse has accommodation for six guests in three rooms, a roof top terrace, a simple eco-toilet and wash facilities. The communitys' cook simple but tasty food along with coffee and tea, while bottled drinks – water, beer and soft drinks are available for purchase.

The trekking takes you up onto the sandstone ridges and through the farmed valleys with ample chance to see farming and community activities. There is also a surprising amount of wildlife in these mountains with Gelada monkeys, hyrax, jackals, and a wonderful selection of birds from sunbirds and little Cordon Bleu to Lammergeyers and Batteleur eagles.

The most westerly guesthouse is at Erar built on an isolated section of the western escarpment with wonderful views westward to the mountains of Adwa and the Nebulet pillars. It can be accessed from the Adigrat – Axum road via a good gravel road that ends at a village called Rahya from where it is a 90min walk along the escarpment to Erar.

Erar, like Shimbrety is on the sandstone escarpment on the western edge of the area, also at 2,800 meters. It is a bit closer to the mountains on the Adwa side with some interesting pinnacles of rock in view to the northwest.

Shimbrety Community Guesthouse | Tigray Region

After breakfast, it is  a 5 hour walk/hike  through the valleys to Shimbrity. As you get close to Shimbrity there is an interesting rock tunnel that has been carved through the ridge to give villages on the western side access to the lovely rock church of Maryam Buzuhan. The church itself is a lovely one, and the trail there after hugs the mountain and winds up to the plateau on the top.

Shimbrity is the most southerly community-run guesthouse, some 20km north of Hawzien and can also be reached from Gheralta Lodge (using transport to drop you halfway). This is on the western ridge of the Agame Mountains.

Camping Saba River | Danakil Depression

Saba River Mobile Camp is the base at which visitors come to stay when visiting the geysers of the psychedelic Dallol “Jiin Hill”. A 10,000 square kilometers wide depression, which sinks as deep as over 100 meters under sea level. A short 1,5hr drive from the campsite to the thick salt surface partially covering the ground of this ancient ocean.

During the cooler seasons, visitors can witness the manual extraction of this “white gold” and phenomenal site of of hundreds of camels and donkeys, convoyed by an army of fokolo (extractors) and edele (cutters), marching in an almost an endless line towards an their destination. The salt, cut into slabs and loaded on the animals’ back, is then transported along the Saba river canyon to Berhale village, where it is loaded on trucks for further distribution.

Wassyma Campsite - Bale mountains | Bale Mountain National Park

The Bale Mountain Park is 2,150km2 and is comprised of five major vegetation zones;

  • The Northern Grasslands
  • The Juniper Woodlands
  • The Afroalpine Meadows (The Sanneti Plateau & Upper Web Valley)
  • Erica Belt: Moorlands & Forest
  • Harenna Forest

Wassyma Campsite is located towards the north-centre (eastwards of the park) in the Afroalpine Meadows (The Sanneti Plateau & Upper Web Valley).

The Bale Mountains National Park contains the largest patch of Afroalpine land on the continent. With an altitude above 4,000m, the Sanetti plateau is the flat mountaintop of the Bale massif.  Due to the altitude, plant diversity here is low, but is covered by Helichrysum moorland dotted with giant lobelia, found from 3,100m to 4,377m growing to a maximum height of 6m. The highest point in the Bale Mountains and second highest point in Ethiopia rises from the plateau: Mount Tulu Dimtu stands at 4,377m. The Afroalpine area of BMNP is the main refuge for the endangered and endemic Ethiopian wolf; with a total global population of less than 450 individuals, it is the rarest canid in Africa. Over half of the population is found in the Bale Mountains National Park. The area is also a home to over 13 rodent species including the entire global population of the giant molerat.

Apart from serving as the wolves’ food, the high abundance of rodents in the area attracts many species of raptors. Special raptor species frequently seen include the steppe eagle, tawny eagle, black eagle, golden eagle, greater spotted eagle, lesser spotted eagle, augur buzzard, long-legged buzzard, lanner falcon, peregrine falcon, pallid harrier and bearded vulture (lammergeyer). In addition to raptors, other groups of birds often easily spotted are the spot-breasted plover, black-headed siskin, Abyssinian longclaw, thekla lark, ground scraper thrush, red-breasted wheatear and alpine chat, all of which are common species located with little effort.

  • Harenna Forest

Sodota Campsite is located towards the north of the park and not far from the the Dinsho Headquarters in The Afroalpine Meadows (The Sanneti Plateau & Upper Web Valley), before descending into the Juniper Woodlands and Erica Belt: Moorlands & Forest.

Dinsho Campsite | Bale Mountain National Park

The Bale Mountain Park is 2,150km2 and is comprised of five major vegetation zones;

  • The Northern Grasslands
  • The Juniper Woodlands
  • The Afroalpine Meadows (The Sanneti Plateau & Upper Web Valley)
  • Erica Belt: Moorlands & Forest
  • Harenna Forest

Dinsho Campsite is based at the park Headquarters in the Juniper Woodlands ares and is close to the Grasslands.

The juniper woodlands cover the northern slopes of the Bale massif, reaching from Dodola to Dinsho. These woodlands are under intense pressure from grazing, inhibiting the growth of new trees. Hagenia abyssinica and African juniper (Juniperus procera) dominate the woodlands. At the upper limit of their distribution, the juniper trees are smaller than in other parts of the park. In contrast, the Hagenia trees can grow to be massive, flowering from November to February. St John’s wort (Hypericum revolutum) is also common in the woodlands, growing as shrubs near the lower edge and reaching a height of 5m in the upper tree line. They are easily recognizable by their bright yellow flowers, which bloom throughout the year and are the major source of nectar for the honey produced in the area. Also present is the only indigenous rose to Africa (Rosa abyssinica), which has fragrant, white flowers.

Mountain nyala, warthog, Menelik’s bushbuck, colobus monkey and olive baboon can be spotted in the area. Birds to look for include the wattled ibis, Abyssinian catbird, white-backed black tit, Abyssinian ground thrush, gold-mantled woodpecker, red- breasted wryneck, thick-billed raven and many more.
