The attractive 4 star Palissandre Hotel & Spa is one of the more modern of the Tana hotels. It has a pleasant hillside setting overlooking the ‘City of Thousands’ as downtown  Antanarivo is known.. It is an attractive building with rose-coloured brickwork, Mantasoa stonework, and much use of rosewood and marble in the interior. 

There are 46 are simply furnished but well appointed rooms. All have air conditioning, polished Palissander wooden floors and furniture, safe, minibar, TV, wifi, telephone, hairdryer, bathrobes and full bathroom with bath and shower.  Families are welcome with triple or inter-connecting rooms available.

It has a good restaurant, La Table des Hautes Terres which serves a mix of French and Madagascan cuisine. The dining terrace offers stunning views over the city, especially at sunset when all the multi-coloured houses are lit up by the evening rays. Breakfast and lunch are also served on the terrace. 

There’s also a popular cocktail bar with entertainment on selected evenings and a swimming pool. Plus there’s even a Spa with Hammam and gym – just what you need in the middle of a busy Madagascar holiday.

Couleur Cafe is a small little guesthouse in Antsirabe, a convient overnight stop en route between Tana and the Ranomafana National Park further south. There are eight bungalows including a family chalet in a charming garden. Eulophiella Lodge | Andasibe

Eulophellia Lodge is a comfortable mid-range lodge which lies about 6km from the park (along a rather rough road) in its own spacious grounds complete with fruit trees, palm trees and little wooden bridges connecting the well-spaced bungalows. 

The lodge is named after the Eulophiella orchid which grows throughout Madagascar. There are 17 en suite rooms of two types. The original ‘Ascendants’ rooms are predominantly wood with palm-thatched roofs. The newer ‘Parfums d’Orangiers’ (Orange Perfume) rooms are more much more spacious with king beds and a sitting area. These have a wraparound veranda – perfect for relaxing after a busy morning hiking in the forest reserves. All have mosquito nets and en suite bathrooms. 

The restaurant has panoramic views from the tall windows as well as the balcony where meals are also served. There’s a choice of Malagasy and European specialities.This sizable room has a central fireplace and well stocked bar, featuring wooden bar stools. Outside there are plenty of verandas where you can enjoy the lush tropical gardens. There is no swimming pool but you can cool down in the natural pool in the grounds, or enjoy some boules in the gardens.
