This tour gives a very personal and authentic look into life in the townships.
The tour begins with a stop in at the MORE Community Foundation-supported Injongo Educare Crèche, Mfuleni where guests can help to make or serve the children breakfast, and read, play ball and have singalongs with them. This is followed by a short walk down the road to where the crèche began at the home of inspirational founder, Mavis Ngcongolo who will be there to greet the group.
Then it’s on to the township of Khayelitsha where guests can see the whole of Cape Town’s biggest location from Lookout Hill at the Tourism Centre, before taking a drive through the streets, hearing about its history and people as they go.
The tour’s last stop is Langa (meaning ‘sun’) and arguably Cape Town’s most vibrant and progressive settlement. Here, guests visit Langa Heritage Museum in The Old Pass Court building, Guga Sthebe Arts & Culture Centre for local empowerment, and Langa Quarter where the Ikhaya Le Langa project is furthering social enterprise and creating a tourism hotspot.

Dinner is quite an experience at Leeu Estates, as you’re taken on a culinary journey at one of two on-site fine dining restaurants – one being the little sister of an award-winning global front-runner. Surrounded with acres of vineyards and nestled against the slopes of the Dassenberg Mountain, the Fynbosch Cottage is a perfect Winelands getaway; including a landscaped private garden, sparkling plunge pool, outdoor hot tub and timber pergola veranda from which to soak up the dramatic views of this internationally renowned Cape Winelands valley. A size of 213m²/2 297ft² and surrounded by vineyards, Max House is housed in an original gabled building that reflects its Cape Dutch heritage. It has a courtyard with a private garden and comprises an Executive Suite, two Classic Rooms, a living room with a fireplace and a dining room. A pantry and a kitchen are available for the use of a private chef, which can be arranged.
A size of 85m²/914ft², Vineyard Cottage with its own magnificent terrace and private plunge pool overlooking the manicured vineyards, offers easy access to Leeu Spa by Healing Earth & Gym. The cottage, which affords views of landscaped gardens and a mountain backdrop, comprises two rooms and a shared lounge with fireplace.
A size of 186m²/2 001ft² and housed in the original cellar, this heritage building enjoys views of the manicured gardens and vineyards. It comprises an Executive Suite with Terrace and a Deluxe Room, two terraces leading off the living room which has a fireplace, a pantry and access to a private garden with a lawn. Children can be accommodated on a sofa bed in the lounge.
The Oaks, offers privacy, luxurious interiors and unparalleled views of the Franschhoek Valley and is the perfect family getaway. Drive through the secure estate to a private parking bay at the entrance to the cottage, surrounded by vineyards, bottle brush and local flora. At a size of 98m²/1 020ft² The Oaks comprises of two rooms each with a shower only, comfortable lounge area, hot tub and a large terrace garden to soak up the astounding views. This private cottage is suitable for four adults travelling together.
Protea House is situated above one of the earthen dams on Leeu Estates, surrounded by natural Fynbosch and acres of vines, resting against the slopes of Dassenberg Mountain. Protea House offers an inviting open-plan lounge area, pantry, its own pool and pool house (31m²/335ft²) as well as a dedicated braai (a truly South African version of a ‘barbecue’) area. Indaba – The Meeting Place at Leeu Estates is a state-of-the-art multipurpose event and meeting venue available for all in-house Leeu Collection guests. The light-filled space, with its open roof trusses, tall windows, timber floors and natural finishes, perfectly complements the collection of art and sculptures.
The well-appointed venue can accommodate up to 60 guests (cocktail) both inside and on the terrace overlooking the beautiful valley and mountain landscape for a variety of private parties, exhibitions and product launches.
Press briefings, seminars, business meetings and management think tank sessions for up to 20 guests can be accommodated in boardroom, schoolroom or U-shaped seating. Cinema seating can accommodate up to 60 guests. Indaba, which is 140m2/1 510ft2 in size and has its own lift, boasts audio and video conferencing equipment, a 203-centimetre (80-inch) television screen and high-speed wifi. Catering for Indaba is done by the The Dining Room culinary team.

The in-house dining option at Leeu Estates means resident guests never have to leave the property, if they so desire. From all-day light dining to full à la carte, every dish makes the best of seasonal produce, in keeping with the Leeu Collection ethos. There are several vegan and vegetarian options too. The breakfast menu is comprehensive but also allows guests to tailor their personal preferences for the most important meal of the day. Children have their own menu, which includes spectacular desserts to thrill the little ones.

La Colombe, the award-winning and world-renowned restaurant based in Constantia, one of the oldest winemaking regions of South Africa, has established a sister restaurant at Leeu Estates, run by the

Game drives, in open safari vehicles, head out at sunrise and again in the late afternoon. The reserve’s natural animal populations include all of the Big Five, and it is renowned for the quality of its leopard sightings – the most elusive of predators. With no more than 16 vehicles allowed on the reserve at any one time, Lions Sands assures you a truly personal safari, and the field guides are able to take you within close range of Africa’s most impressive species. Photo opportunities are spectacular! Also included is a hot beverage/sundowner stop to purely appreciate being in the bush and in the moment.
For those who wish to experience the bush, not just observe it, there is no better guided excursion. Feel the scrub crunch beneath your feet, touch a velvety acacia seed pod, hear the crack of a branch indicating you are not alone, and spot the game appear just metres off – exhilarating! This is also a wonderful opportunity to encounter the smaller creatures, often missed on safari vehicles, and to discover more about the reserve’s plants – many with fascinating medicinal properties and traditional uses.
Lion Sands together with MORE Community Foundation assists our local Huntington and Justicia B villages, and you can get involved, too. Take a community tour (proceeds go to our development projects here), or roll up your sleeves with our Get Your Hands Dirty initiatives. These centre on education, infrastructure, health and environment, and you can choose the area best suited to your interest.

Dining at Ivory is an exploration, with a table laid out wherever you wish, and dishes and wines introducing you to new flavours. Every dietary requirement and craving are satisfied, and we will tempt your taste buds with our tapas style lunches and venison tastings.
