The spectacular location of Ellerman House, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean from the foot of Lion’s Head, is undoubtedly part of the property’s enduring allure. Its breathtaking position inspires calm serenity while being in close proximity to the Cape’s numerous attractions.
The charming boutique hotel you see today is an original Cape Edwardian mansion that was built in 1906 and has stood sentinel over Bantry Bay for more than 115 years. With only 13 bedrooms and two private villas, we excel at offering our guests a world-class level of service that is intuitive and understated.

The top floor has a reading room and three bedrooms, each with a spacious bathroom featuring infinity mirrors. The master bedroom (Aqua) has ocean views from the bedroom and bathroom. The second bedroom (Lilac) also has ocean views and a striking Balinese-style bathroom. The third bedroom (Yellow) faces the Twelve Apostles mountain range and is designed as a twin room with two single beds (all the rooms can be converted into king or twin beds on request). The reading room has a single divan for relaxing and enjoying a selection of books and magazines. This room can be converted into a single bedroom if need be.

The first level of Villa Two comprises an inviting central corridor leading to a guest bathroom, study area, and private cinema. There are three luxuriously appointed bedrooms each with an extensive open-plan dressing room, bathroom and separate W/C. The rooms are named Sea Point, Clifton and Bantry Bay, according to their geographical orientation and outlook. Each bedroom extends outdoors onto a private terrace with wonderful views.
Level two:
The top floor (street level) includes a glass-walled entrance foyer that opens up into light-filled living, dining and entertainment areas decorated in soft, soothing sea tones with natural stone and unembellished wood finishes. Fold-away, floor-to-ceiling glass doors on two sides seamlessly integrate the indoor and outdoor entertainment areas, infinity pool, and spectacular ocean views. To the right of the entrance foyer is an open-plan kitchen designed for social, interactive cooking equipped with a large central island, sleek timber cupboards, a separate scullery and walk-in cold room. The kitchen may be closed off from the dining area by a sliding panel. A personal chef is on call to create breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner. The emphasis is on fresh, locally sourced and seasonal ingredients. Any dietary needs or restrictions, food allergies or children’s meals may be discussed with the chef.

Communities in South Africa were extremely physically and culturally isolated from international centres of artistic innovation in the early 20th Century - a time before instantaneous globalisation of today. The Ellerman House collection traces the progress of pioneering work done in the 1930s by a generation of artists, such as Gregoire Boonzaaier, Maggie Laubser and Irma Stern, who were members of The New Group. Progressive identification by artists, such as Walter Battiss and Alexis Preller, with the essential nature of the land and its people - its Africanism, further reinforced the unique qualities of this land. The emergence of black pioneering artist like Gerard Sekoto and George Pemba began a process of cultural integration of the country’s ethnic communities into a unified South African art. In the Ellerman House Contemporary Gallery, an eclectic, outspoken and energetic generation of current artists such as Benon Lutaaya, Heidi Fourie & Blessing Ngobeni are pushing the boundaries of the ordinary in order to create work that explores relevant issues in post-modern South African society. Each individually designed by founder, Liz Biden, these 100m² suites boast a variety of exciting artworks, ornaments and furnishings, setting the scene for an unforgettable vacation in the Cape Winelands.
Sumptuous fabrics, brilliant, jewel-like colours and over-sized furniture conspire to create a sense of sublime comfort. This suite has an elevated four-poster bed, high ceilings and en-suite bathroom. Let the rich red interior of this Vineyard Suite warm and inspire you. Swagged curtains, a high ceiling and rustic stone fireplace create a sense of homely grandeur. The two bedroom Vineyard Suite is an elegant and sociable space. Ngala Safari lodge has 20 air-conditioned thatched cottages with ensuite bathrooms including a shower, twin hand basins, wc, bath. Each cottage has an intimate veranda.
The lodge boasts three family cottages, each consisting of two suites that are conveniently interlinked via a door for easy access. The cottages exude a romantic colonial ambiance with nostalgic safari memorabilia throughout. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows make the most of sunny safari days and a private veranda offers the perfect setting for private dinners. Guests can also take advantage of spacious ensuite bathrooms as well as inviting al fresco showers. The cottages can accommodate two adults and two children.
Situated in the shade of a weeping boerbean tree on the banks of the seasonal Mapone River, the Family Villa* at andBeyond Ngala Safari Lodge consists of three bedrooms (two adult rooms each with an ensuite bathroom and one smaller children’s room with an ensuite bathroom), as well as a cosy dining area where you can choose to enjoy a private dining experience or a refreshing sundowner cocktail. The vehicle has been fitted with state-of-the-art camera mounts and cater for a maximum of four guests, ensuring exclusivity during your safari experience.
Enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get up close and personal with rhino at andBeyond Ngala Private Game Reserve while assisting in the conservation of this endangered species. This adventure allows guests to witness the capture and darting of rhino. A wildlife vet will locate and dart the rhino from the vantage point of a helicopter, while the guests and ground crew will follow in open 4x4 safari vehicles. Once darted, the veterinary team will notch the sleeping animal’s ear for research and security monitoring, as well as insert a microchip into the horn, enabling researchers to correctly identify different rhino on the reserve. Groups of up to eight guests can participate in this conservation initiative and have the never-to-be-repeated opportunity of touching the anaesthetised giant during the notching procedure. Guests will need to spend a minimum of three nights at Ngala.

Two cabanas are set under local thatch, amongst a lush island forest. The cabanas boast a light and airy colour scheme that combines tropical chic with a distinct African feel and reminders of the area’s Portuguese heritage. The cosy interiors of the cabanas makes them perfect for couples and honeymooners. The cabanas are slightly smaller than casinhas and vertical in shape. There is no sitting area in the cabanas, however a lounger is located at the foot of the bed. The ensuite bathroom features an outdoor shower and is located behind the bed. The cabanas offer private timber decks and cool rim flow pools. There is also a private sala with a hanging daybed, as well as private sun loungers situated on the beach

Snorkelling is ideal for those who do not wish to do a scuba diving accreditation but who want to confidently explore the shallower coral reefs, situated off Benguerra Island, with the help of a snorkel.
A guided snorkelling course is also available at an additional cost, offered by andBeyond’s Benguerra Island specialist dive masters, and covers safety procedures, equipment, currents and suggested snorkelling spots.
Hop aboard a traditional dhow (a wooden sailing vessel owned by one of the local people of the island and mostly used for fishing). A friendly fisherman will fetch you from your Casita or Cabana in the late afternoon, where you will board his dhow for an unforgettable cruise around the bay.
The adventure can be tailored according to your requirements and varies from a 30 minute trip to the school or 2 hours around the Island. The journey will take you past the lakes and dunes on the northern side of the island, past the school, the church and through the village so you can interact with some of the local people and find out more about the community projects that are run on the island.
Spend an afternoon indulging on a mouth-watering “Cast-Away” picnic and explore the highest dune in the Bazaruto Archipelago. You will have the opportunity to simply put your feet up and enjoy the breathtaking, 360 degree views of South Point – bring your camera along for excellent photographic opportunities and keep a look out for frolicking dolphins at play.

Horseback riding is the perfect activity to take in the exceptional beauty of Benguerra Island.
Enjoy a different perspective of this piece of paradise, at a pace that is comfortable for you. Nine horses and a dedicated guide, based at Benguerra Lodge, are on hand to introduce you to fantastic trails (suitable for all riding levels from first time to experienced riders and with a 85kg weight restriction).

Dress down for the occasion, in just your swimwear, and ride bareback into azure waters, floating amongst the waves on top of your mount. Expect plentiful splashing, and bouts of laughter, as the horses absolutely love to frolic in the ocean. Afterwards, hop off your steed and allow them to enjoy a well-deserved roll on the beach. This 30 to 45 minute adventure allows for a maximum of 4 guests per swim and is perfect as a standalone activity or can be added after a more extensive horseback exploration of the island. The Swimming with Horses activity is seasonal as well as weather and tide dependent.
