Sample Desert Dune Safari

Wilderness Kulala Desert Lodge | Sossusvlei

Situated at the foot of the majestic Sossusvlei dunes, a private entrance to Namib Naukluft Park makes Kulala Desert Lodge the closest location to Sossusvlei, while magnificent views of its famous red dunes, mountainous scenery and vast open plains make it the most spectacular. The camp comprises 23 thatched and canvas “kulalas” (including three family units) with en-suite bathrooms and verandas. Each unit is built on a wooden platform to catch the cooling breezes and a flat rooftop where bedrolls are placed for guests to sleep under the stars. The main area, with northern African-inspired décor, has a lounge, dining area, pool, and wraparound veranda overlooking a waterhole. Activities impress guests with the overwhelming magnitude, solitude and tranquillity of the desert and include private tours to Sossusvlei, scenic nature walks and drives to view the desert’s fascinating flora and fauna. At extra cost, it is also possible to experience the area on a hot air balloon safari and eco-sensitive guided quad-biking excursions.

Wilderness Damaraland Camp | Twyfelfontein

Damaraland is one of our favourite areas of Namibia - its innate beauty intensified by the solitude and the sense of freedom it engenders. This rugged mountain wilderness to the west of Etosha offers great photographic opportunities with its imposing granite domes, dramatic flat-topped mountains and vast panoramas. It's attraction is the peace and solitude rather than teeming herds of game. However you may be lucky enough to encounter some of the desert-dwelling elephant, the rare black rhino and other game that migrates across Damaraland according to the rains. It is highly dependent on recent rainfall patterns as these animals will journey way out of their normal region in search of water sources. However there are also herds of gemsbok, springbok, kudu (in the eastern parts), steenbok, mountain zebra and giraffe in the area. A visit to the fascinating rock engravings at Twyfelfontein, a prehistoric art gallery, and the fossilized tree trunks of the Petrified Forest, are equally absorbing.

Wilderness Desert Rhino Camp | Palmwag

Desert Rhino Camp is set in the rolling, rocky hills which make up the stark beauty of the 450,000 hectare Palmwag Concession in Damaraland. It offers the rare opportunity of an encounter with the desert-adapted black rhino. This desert reserve has a number of fresh water springs that support healthy wildlife populations including desert-adapted elephant as well as large populations of the rare Hartman's Mountain zebra, giraffe, oryx, springbok and kudu. The predator population is the largest outside of Etosha with over 100 lions, as well as cheetah, leopard, brown and spotted hyena. Bird life is prolific and diverse with most of Namibia's endemics present.

The camp, set in a wide valley, accommodates 16 guests in eight large East Africa-styled tents all with verandas overlooking the long views of the desert and Etendeka Mountains. The en-suite bathroom has hand basin, flush toilet and a classic bucket shower that is filled with hot water whenever needed. Lights are powered by solar panels and the tented dining room offers uninterrupted views of the desert and mountains.

Activities include rhino tracking on foot or by vehicle as well as day and night nature drives. The area boasts the largest concentration of rhino anywhere on the planet outside of a national park.

Desert Rhino Camp is a joint venture between Wilderness Safaris and the Save the Rhino Trust - a non-profit conservation organization that has been working in this area for 20 years. The Trust has been singly responsible for helping to ensure that these rare, desert adapted black rhino survived the slaughter that went on throughout other parts of Africa in the 80s and 90s. Today this population of black rhino is growing in numbers. Community game scouts who were employed by the Trust to help with the patrolling and monitoring all these years are now seconded to the camp as trackers and guides.

Wilderness Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp | Hoanib River

The name “Skeleton Coast” conjures up romantic images of desolate beauty, and proudly remote Wilderness Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp in the Kaokoveld does not disappoint. The dry bed of the Hoanib River supports a thin green ribbon of vegetation and the wild beaches of the Atlantic coast are within reach, with their noisy seal colonies and eerily quiet shipwreck remnants.

Eight large en-suite tents (including one family unit) and the main area provide shady viewpoints, while nature drives into the surrounding area reveal a wealth of desert-adapted wildlife. Desert-adapted lion and brown hyena may also be glimpsed in this vast but far from lifeless landscape.

INSIDER'S TIP: On a stay of three nights or more, a coastal excursion to The Skeleton Coast is included. Usually involving a drive down to the coast and a flight back to camp, to see such a diverse area both on the ground and in the air.
