Singita Ebony Lodge | Sabi Sand Nature Reserve
Singita Ebony Lodge, located on the Sand River in the Singita Sabi Sand reserve offers a contemporary take on the classic safari lodge, combining tented camp and bush lodge style. The lodge comprises 12 suites, each with its own private plunge pool. Inspired by the romance and adventure of tented camps and explorers’ abodes, the external walls have been almost completely removed and replaced by canvas and glass to create safari tent-style suites to maximise views, and to allow guests to be immersed in nature. Outdoor pavilion decks – ideal for dining and relaxing – are suspended off the river banks as if hanging in the trees.
Singita Ebony Lodge offers six 1-bedroom suites, each with a private plunge pool and game viewing deck.
Singita Ebony Lodge offers two Bush Suites, each with a private plunge pool and game viewing deck. The suites have a joined entrance but are completely private from each other and are perfect for families needing a little more privacy.
Singita Ebony Lodge offers two 1-bedroom Lewis Suites, each with a private plunge pool and game viewing deck. These suites are located closer to the main lodge, which makes them a great option for families.
The family suites at Singita Ebony Lodge allow families to relax in their own space and share the wonderful experience of a safari together. The family suites offer an en-suite master bedroom with outside shower and comfortable second en-suite bedroom, private game viewing deck, a living room with fireplace and swimming pool for guests to enjoy shared time together.

Daily game drives with professional guides and trackers provide the perfect opportunity to get up close to Africa’s incredible animals, while late afternoon drives reveal the elusive magic of nocturnal Africa. Our game drives are all conducted in state-of-the-art Land Rovers, each accommodating a maximum of six guests. During your stay at Singita Sabi Sand, you are likely to spot a great variety of wildlife including leopard, lion, rhino, large herds of buffalo, elephant, reedbuck, hyena, hippopotamus, nyala, cheetah, wild dogs and many species of birds.
Walking safaris are an incredible way to experience the bush up close and personal. Your expert guide and tracker will accompany you as you track animals on foot through the wilderness and explore the magnificent plants and landscapes around you.
There is perhaps no more transcendent experience than looking up at a full sky of sparkling stars. Man has had a love affair with the nighttime sky for centuries and with very little pollution and no city lights to detract from the stars, your view of the heavens here will be crystal clear – nothing between you and the vast African sky above.
Fully equipped fitness centres are available for guests’ convenience. Each facility provides picturesque views of the bush, allowing you to keep an eye on the action outside while you work out.
Each suite at Singita Ebony Lodge comes complete with a private infinity pool as well as the idyllic swimming pool at the main lodge area.
At Singita, we believe true wellness can be unlocked when the wholeness of our guests is honoured on every level.
That’s why our holistic approach transcends traditional thinking – going well beyond one-hour massage treatments and short-lived escapes.
It’s a philosophy that’s woven into every touchpoint and experience from the minute guests arrive in our world – and a mindset that allows us to intuitively offer meaningful engagements that stay with them long after they depart.
Anchored in continuous connections that contribute to a deep-seated sense of peace, safety and belonging, Wholeness at Singita includes endless opportunities to find stillness, nurturing and awakening within nature.
Through Africa’s healing rituals and ingredients, and during soulful interactions with the cultures and people at the heart of each region, our guests can be truly restored.
Wholeness at Singita is about creating moments that resonate with our guests for life. Unique to this
continent, and an essential part of our brand, a spirit of generosity, joy, gentleness, and calm underpins the entire experience.
For the past three decades, high-end design and effortless safari style have been trademarks of Singita’s tailormade guest experience.
Our Boutique & Gallery spaces give travellers the opportunity to source unique décor elements, exceptional African artefacts and jewellery, the most sought after contemporary African art, and more – all in beautiful boutique and art gallery settings.
Every piece and collectible serves not only to remind guests of their stay at Singita, but also adds stylish African touches to their homes and wardrobes.
We look forward to welcoming you to the Singita Boutique & Gallery on your next visit to our lodges.
As one of South Africa’s most influential buyers of wine, Singita’s cellars are home to some of the most sought-after private reserves and vintage wines the country has to offer. Whether you are a connoisseur or just enjoy the occasional glass of wine, our experienced sommeliers delight in introducing guests to a vast selection of varietals from all over the world.
Through Singita Premier Wine Direct guests may purchase wines from our cellars: either to be taken home at the end of their trip or conveniently delivered to their door. As an addition to cellar purchases, we have secured allocations of highly limited, sought-after wines, including ‘Icons’, ‘Single Vineyard’ and ‘Limited Release’ wines, directly from leading wineries in South Africa. Stored in temperature-controlled cellars, these wines are unlikely to be available anywhere else.
Guests have the opportunity to visit the Sabi Sand Canine Unit for an interactive session where they can participate in an actual tracking exercise with a dog and handler. Guests have the opportunity to meet with a senior handler and go behind-the-scenes at the base camp and see the workings of this dedicated and specialized unit. The dogs are highly trained and able to perform multiple functions, from pursuing intruders to sniffing out rhino horn and ammunition from vehicles and bags. Due to the sensitive and costly nature of the program, a donation amount of ZAR5,000 per person has been set. A minimum of 2 and maximum of 6 guests are allowed per demonstration.

The ultimate seaside getaway, Plettenberg Bay offers a multitude of varied and unique experiences for all ages. It’s a destination with a year-round temperate climate, beautiful beaches and unrivalled scenery – it’s also a destination that has a culture of conservation, living history, and annual events and festivals, as well as a flourishing creative community.
The Plettenberg is located within walking distance of the Lookout Art Gallery. Established in 1974, its collection of art (from ceramics to paintings) focuses on the Southern Cape and South Africa. Also, get to the heart of Plett’s art community at Old Nick Village, a network of restored heritage buildings set in lush, indigenous gardens and housing resident fine artists and master craftsmen. Find local design, entertainment and so much more.
Another interesting creative cultural excursion is to Global Village, a quaint shopping village filled with arts and crafts purveyors to discover. The whole family will love it.
Speaking of family-friendly options, visitors will also enjoy Adventure Land in Harkerville, with activities ranging from waterslides to quad bikes. Another must-visit is the Plett Puzzle Park, with its life-size 3D maze, the forest puzzle walk that meanders through the natural forest, and a rope maze for the kids.
Plettenberg Bay’s rich eco-systems support many kinds of creatures, big and small, and as such, there is a sharp focus on conservation. There are a number of parks that offer one-of-a-kind encounters with wildlife.
One of the most famous is Monkeyland, a sanctuary for various species of free-roaming monkey; visitors can join them in the forest on a “monkey safari”. Located next door is Birds of Eden, which is said to be the largest free-flight aviary in the world. Think indigenous forest with waterfalls and elevated walkways. At the Elephant Sanctuary visitors can touch, feed, walk as well as ride African elephants. There are many such experiences, and some include birds of prey, snakes, wolves and more.
With its beautiful backdrop and efficient infrastructure, Plettenberg Bay hosts many annual festivals and events; look out for regular concerts, too. Some of the highlights on the calendar include the Tour de Plett, the Whale Rally, the Plett Fringe Festival and, most recently, the Plett Food Film Festival.
Plettenberg Bay, tucked neatly into the Garden Route, boasts golden beaches, a rugged peninsula and dense green forests. There’s so much to see and discover that is rich with adventure, experience and spectacular sightseeing.
Are you looking for a relaxing seaside getaway? The Plettenberg, perched on a rocky headland overlooking endless views of ocean, mountain and beaches, offers the ultimate base from which to explore the variety of outdoor activities.
Plettenberg Bay boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in South Africa, where activities such as surfing, kayaking and skimboarding are popular. Plett is said to have the second-most temperate climate in the world (after Hawaii) and its beaches can be visited year-round, with some just a short walk from the hotel’s doorstep.
Travellers can head to the beach from The Plettenberg, down a path fragrant with fynbos and with a beautiful view of the ocean. Located nearby is Lookout Beach: perfect for families, the little ones can splash in the lagoon and build sandcastles on the shore. There are plenty of activities for all ages too, including kayaking on the lagoon or surfing in the sea.
A popular swimming beach, Robberg 5 is also known for bodyboarding and surfing. For a long walk along a stretch of pristine coastline, Keurboomstrand is just the ticket (surfers love this beach, too).
Those simply wanting to relax on the shore can enjoy land-based whale watching (in season), or spy dolphins playing in the surf.
A must-visit place is the Robberg Nature Reserve. Immerse yourself in the wild natural beauty of its beach, which stretches for kilometres between the Robberg Peninsula and Beacon Island. Or if you like things a bit busier, head to Central beach for a slice of Plett life; very popular for surfing, it’s also the launch site for marine safaris, dive charters and ocean kayaking tours.
Along the Garden Route, visitors will find a large variety of adventure sports, from horse riding to bungee jumping.
For a bird’s eye view, the Bloukrans bungee jump is the world’s highest commercial bridge jump (216m) and is set amid the beauty of the Tsitsikamma Forest. Skydive in Plett for what is said to be “the most scenic drop zone in the world”. And keep things sky high with a Tsitsikamma canopy tour, where participants follow a course 30m above the forest floor.
Those who like to stay closer to the ground will enjoy the Outeniqua biking trails, self-guided trails in the Harkerville coastal forests and marine reserve.
Another must-see site is Groot Boom in the Tsitsikamma National Park (a diverse and beautiful reserve encompassing five eco-systems, with many activities and hiking trails). The “Big Tree” is an Outeniqua yellowwood, native to the montane forests of Southern Africa; it is estimated to be between 600 and 1 000 years old, and is said to be South Africa’s oldest yellowwood.
Golf is also very popular along the Garden Route, which was named the 2014 Golf Destination of the Year for Africa and the Gulf States. Practice your swing at a number of beautiful golf courses, amid stunning natural scenery.
Situated in the coastal town of Plettenberg Bay (20 minutes from Knysna), Ocean Blue Adventure offers a rare and powerful experience through permitted boat based whale watching & dolphin encounters. We also offer an “at one with the ocean” kayaking tour, and township tours. All tours are guided with expert crew and tour operators who are internationally qualified. Call us today for a booking or more advice. Ocean Blue is a licensed SABBWWA permit holder, which enables us to approach whales from 50 metres instead of 300 metres. Should the whales approach our vessel we do not have to move away. The guests therefore get an up close experience with these majestic mammals in the bay.
Summer = Dolphin Season
In summer you have a great chance to see the rare Humpback Dolphins found in only certain areas of the South African coastline! You will also see Bottlenose Dolphins and Common Dolphins… We will also take you to the Robberg Seal Colony where you will see around 5,000 seals in their natural environment.
Winter = Whale Season
In winter you have a very high likelihood of seeing Southern Right and Humpback whales. Our tours include the Robberg Seal Colony (home to +- 5000 seals) and other marine life of the day.
Go scuba diving or take diving courses and charters around Plettenberg Bay.
There's scuba diving for all levels of experience (including kids) on Plettenberg Bay's coral reefs. Seal dives, night dives and shore dives, inside and outside the Bay, will bring you mask to nose with over 100 species of fish. If you're lucky, you may even find yourself among a pod of dolphins.
Shore dives on offer include Redbait Reef, known as the Bay’s ‘house reef’, which is great for beginners or the less-experienced diver. It’s easily accessible from the beach and its plentiful natural light is a boon to the underwater photographer.
Buy a cheap disposable underwater camera if you’ve never tried this before and snap up reef fish, cuttlefish, sharks, sea urchins, anemones and squishy sponges.
You’ll need to swim a short way to reach Shallow Blinders, a 3-pinnacled coral reef that nurtures dozens of fish. Check out ragged-tooth, pyjama and leopard sharks plus rays, octopus, cuttlefish and boxfish.
Swim a bit further out to Blinders Reef where the Wall awaits you: a technicolour dream of soft coral and its many denizens, including orange wall sponges, blue choirboys, strawberry anemones and, everywhere you look, multi-coloured coral.

The Bloukrans Bungy is the worlds highest commercial bungy bridge. It is also the highest commercial natural bungy jump in the World. We have had a number of world records associated with Bloukrans. In 2003, Bloukrans bungy was recognised as the worlds highest commercial bungy jump. In 2008 we were part of two more world records. Veronica Dean performed 19 bungy jumps in one hour and Bill Boshoff performed 101 jumps in a 24 hour period. Bill's world record was subsequently surpassed but in 2011 we facillitated Scott Hunty to regain the world record with 107 jumps in the 24 hour period.
The Bloukrans Bridge is 216 meters (709 feet) above the Bloukrans River. Our bungy jump operations is open 365 days of the year during all weather conditions (except gale force winds)
Our primary focus is on maintaining the highest quality safety standards on our operations so that bungy jumping can be experienced and enjoyed by all. All our operations are covered by comprehensive public liability.
We are pleased to announce our online store is now live.....We recommend that you pre book any jumps no less than 48 hrs in advance– particularly if it is a group booking. This will enable us to plan our day more effectively and to process your jumps/jumpers more timeously.
The Tsitsikamma Canopy Tour© is a unique eco-wilderness adventure that takes place in the magnificent Tsitsikamma indigenous rainforest.
The first of its kind in Africa, the canopy tour involves traversing from one platform to another along a steel cable suspended up to 30 meters above the forest floor...
Most platforms are located in giant Outeniqua Yellowwood trees. The scenery and bird life is spectacular and professional guides provide interesting facts about the forest ecology during the 2½ to 3 hours.
The concept of guiding people through the upper canopy of a rainforest originated in Costa Rica, where adventurous biologists devised new methods for accessing the forest canopy in order to conduct research on the undiscovered canopy ecosystem. The idea soon developed into a breathtaking form of eco-tourism which allowed people to enter and experience a previously inaccessible natural environment.
Construction of the Tsitsikamma Canopy Tour© has been done in accordance with strict civil engineering standards. The system was designed and created by an adventurous civil engineer who constructed a similar canopy tour in Costa Rica. Concept to completion took fourteen and a half months.
The tour begins with a detailed safety briefing followed by a 'kitting up' session where full body harness, pulleys and climbing equipment is issued and checked. A short drive into the Tsitsikamma forest and it is time to monkey around!
From the start on the launch platform a new world unfolds as one gently glides on a steel cable to the first tree platform. All groups are escorted through the forest canopy by a lead guide and a follow guide to ensure your safety as you slide from tree to tree. The platforms, built high up in the giant Outeniqua Yellowwoods, provide an unbelievable view of this enchanting new world - any fear of heights is soon lost as you gather in your new surroundings.
Spend a couple of minutes relaxing while your guides enthusiastically explain the ecology of the forest - pointing out different trees and the magnificent giant ferns way below. The bird life is incredible. Knysna Loeries, sightings of the elusive Narina Trogon and the Vervet monkey are not uncommon.
The Tsistikamma Canopy Tour© consists of 10 platforms and 10 'fufi' slides, the longest of which is 100m! About three hours later you exit the forest, having undertaken the journey of a lifetime. You have contributed to the creation of new jobs and are helping the forest regeneration project.
The Garden Route is home to some of the most extraordinary mountain biking in the counrty. From the lush forests and sweet tasting streams to the spectacular heights of the Outeniqua Mountains this area has it all. It is our intension to show these enjoyable trails in a safe comfortable way.
Our trails are suitable for all people with a moderate level of fitness. Persons with doubts as to their physical capabilities are recommended to consult their physicians and call us before participating.
Rider safety is of the utmost importance on all our trips. Mountain biking is a hazardous sport, and all our trips encompass a variety of terrain and riding conditions. If a section looks to difficult, don't hesitate to walk it. The guides will always be on hand to assist. Helmets are a necessity, these can be bought or rented from us. All guides carry a first aid kit.
Outeniqua Biking Trails take low impact riding and camping seriously, and encourage all riders to do the same. We feel this is necessary to ensure future enjoyment of our remaining forests.
Monkeyland opened its doors to the public on the 6th of April 1998. Our unique primate sanctuary is currently the top eco-tourism attraction on the Garden Route and for very sound and sunny reasons. Monkeyland has captured the hearts of visitors in its efforts to rehabilitate and free previously caged primates. The sanctuary is exceptional as it caters for several species of primateswho are not caged. They are free to move about the forest and this they do most harmoniously.
At Monkeyland, the emphasis on searching for the primates, and the reward is to see the various species as they are meant to be: free and in a natural habitat. The transfer of information about these fascinating creatures enhances your visit to the sanctuary during a safari. The safaris are conducted by multi-lingual game rangers and are fun, exciting and educational. Our guests leave our sanctuary with a greater understanding of the primates of the world and the threats they are facing.
On the guided safaris you can expect to see a variety of primates, ranging from the Gibbons of Asia to the Lemurs of Madagascar. The knowledgeable rangers will tell you all about these fascinating mammals as you encounter them roaming free in the forest. They also point out, identify and explain the many wonders of life in the forest, from the rich diversity of bird life to the intricate workings of the forest itself.
Monkeyland provides the primates who live here with a stable environment, one with permanence and where there is definitely no exploitation. At Monkeyland, care exceeds the regulations regarding animal welfare. Monkeyland is, most importantly, a place where primates are rehabilitated both physically and emotionally. We strive to achieve an effective balance between conservation and economic reality. It is therefore tourism driven and totally sustainable. A monkey safari is much more than just an unforgettable forest adventure; it is the vehicle that allows you to become part of our rehabilitation process.
It is because of sanctuaries such as Monkeyland which go beyond idealism, and who strive to do something positive, that we can look forward to a more optimistic future.
Birds of Eden, is the Garden Route's very own world class free flight bird sanctuary.
The unique two hectare dome (the World’s largest) spans over a gorge of indigenous forest. The sanctuary has its own mysterious ruin, which incorporates a walk-behind waterfall. Another feature is its amphitheatre, which has the ability to seat over 200 visitors.
Like Monkeyland, the popular primate sanctuary next-door, Birds of Eden boasts its own canopy walk, while shorter than the 128m bridge at Monkeyland, it hangs above the clouds. The decision to develop Birds of Eden stems from the need to create a safe environment in which to release a large collection of free-flight African birds, miniature monkeys and the sanctuary also enables bird owners to apply to release their pet birds into the sanctuary, after undergoing rehabilitation.
Birds of Eden opened to the public on the 15th of December 2005.
Lawnwood Snake Sanctuary offers hourly informative, interactive tours for any ages with over 100 snakes and other reptiles to see. Open daily 9am – 5pm. We cater for the snake phobic to the snake lover.
Join us for a one hour guided tour consisting of an indigenous snake pit, various outdoor exhibits, a large dome housing South African and exotic snakes, following by enormous pythons, monitor lizards and crocodiles. For the tour, be sure to bring a camera and comfortable walking shoes.
Enjoy a forest walk, tranquil picnic spots and interacting with our various other creatures. For the less adventurous, relax at the tea room or explore the curio shop.
RADICAL RAPTORS is a rehabilitation centre that aims at community awareness and the rescue, rehabilitation and release of birds of prey.
The centre opened at the Heath in Plettenberg Bay, Garden Route on the 6th December 2008. Radical raptors operate directly under the rules & regulations laid down by Cape Nature Conservation.
RADICAL RAPTORS strives to provide on site facilities for the treatment of injured birds of prey and suitable secure housing for birds undergoing treatment.
Proven falconry techniques are used throughout the rehabilitation process to ensure the birds are exercised and cared for in the optimal way.
The release process involves intensively training the raptor to ensure that it is fit and able to hunt for itself. Prior to release, the bird is thoroughly examined, weighed and measured and all data is recorded.
Hand raised raptors are classified as human imprints having identified themselves as humans. Human imprints will not breed naturally and therefore are not releasable candidates. They will claim territories yet not produce offspring. RADICAL RAPTORS utilizes human imprints and birds with permanent injuries as ambassadors in our education and eco-tourism programmes.

Grootbos Nature Reserve has an exclusive boat trip, through Dyer Island Cruises, leaving every morning from Kleinbaai harbour. Besides seeing the amazing whales, this trip offers a complete experience of the Marine Big5, which includes the whales, dolphins, African Penguins, Cape Fur Seals and surface viewing of the Great White Shark. The boat comfortably accommodates 20 guests, has a toilet, upper decks, shelter from the sun as well as snacks and drinks provided onboard. The boat also has specialized guides, who can provide all the facts about the whales as well as other interesting information about the magnificent marine life. As these gentle giants are very curious, they often swim right up to the boat to get a better view of the boat and the guests. This trip takes about 2 hours and is a marine experience not to be missed!
Boat-based whale watching is not part of the standard Grootbos activities included in your rate.
One of the most exciting experiences at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is the Great White Shark cage diving. Gansbaai has the reputation for being the shark capital of the world. Divers and adventurers travel from all over the world to watch this magnificent creature in the waters around Dyer Island. Every day a number of boats leave Kleinbaai harbour to spend a few hours on the water to view the Great White Sharks from the boat or to go diving in a cage with these elegant and large predators. This is a once in a lifetime experience not to be missed!
Cage Diving (No diving experience required!)
This is truly one of the most adventurous activities on our planet, coming face to face with the Great White Shark. No diving experience is required, and all equipment is provided on board. When the sharks are around the boat, the divers get into the cage and the shark is lured to within meters from the cage. As the shark approaches, divers duck under water and marvel in amazement as this awe inspiring creature swims past the cage.
Surface Viewing
Grootbos guests have the choice to either enter the cage on the shark boat or view these magnificent creatures from the top deck of the boat. Surface Viewing is normally suitable for people wanting to see the shark from out of water and not necessarily come face to face with it inside the water. However, it is often commented that one gets a better view of the sharks from the top deck.
Shark Cage Diving is not part of the standard Grootbos activities included in your rate.

A Bird's eyeview of Birding at Grootbos
Birding is akin to stargazing. On cloudless days, you see a myriad of these jewels flickering and floating in the sky, and once you know where and what to look for, you are transfixed by the ethereal pattern and order in their endless motion.
The Grootbos reserve and surrounding areas are a magnet to a wide variety of rare and endemic bird species feeding and breeding in the rich and diverse habitats. You know birding is not for the birds when you see how the Malachite Sunbird, with its bright green iridescent plumage, compete for attention with the flowering aloes and proteas. Grootbos is a birder friendly establishment endorsed by Birdlife SA. Our knowledgeable guides are geared to give bird watchers of all levels a winged overview of these magnificent creatures that enliven our skies and flora with their beauty and procreative activities.
Let's face it, the dazzling tapestry of fynbos wildflowers on Grootbos is not meant to attract tourists - the colourful displays of petals are nature's magic to lure birds and other pollinators to their nectar in exchange for spreading their pollen.
The beaks of the conspicuous endemic Orange-breasted Sunbird and the Southern Double-collared Sunbird are tailor-made for sipping the sweet stuff from the floral tubes of the various Erica species. You cannot miss the male Cape Sugarbird, with its ridiculously long tail (almost 70% of its total length), feeding on the nectar of Protea species. The impressive tail is solely a decorative testimony to manhood - the longer, the better! They whip their tails to attract females and ward off rivals.
In breeding season (September to April) Grootbos guests will encounter a magnitude of feisty and friendly fellows sticking together albeit they are not of the same feather. The diverse habitats - from fynbos, Milkwood and Afromontane forests to riverine scrub and mountain slopes - accommodate at least 120 different bird species, of which 30% are endemic or near endemic to Southern Africa. These include specials such as the Knysna Woodpecker, Cape Clapper-lark and the Southern Tchagra.
Flagship raptors of the area are the majestic Black Harrier, Jackal Buzzard, Forest Buzzard and African Fish-Eagle. The nearby agricultural fields are home to Blue Cranes, the Agulhas Long-billed Lark and the Denham’s Bustard.
Coastal Birding Tours
Grootbos, in partnership with Dyer Island Cruises, also takes guests on a "game viewing" cruise to Dyer Island, where endemics such as the African Black Oystercatcher, Hartlaub’s Gull, Crowned-, Cape- and Bank Cormorant, African Penguin as well as the Cape Gannet flourish. Pelagic species such as the Shy Albatross, Sooty Shearwater and Giant Petrels are also seen from time to time.
The Klipgat Cave outside De Kelders evokes vivid images of pre-historic times when modern man lived haply in symbiotic harmony with nature off the bounty of land and sea when the coastline was still kilometres away. This historical site in the Walker Bay was home to Middle Stone Age peoples some 70 000 to 80 000 years ago when large antelope such as black wildebeest and the extinct “blaauwbok” still abounded in the bay where dolphins, seals and whales now flourish.
Archaeological findings indicate that these primitive folks mainly lived off plants and smaller animals such as dune mole rats, tortoises and hares. They hunted steenbok and eland, while seabirds, shellfish and seals also formed an important part of their diet.
Dubbed Klipgat Cave (stone with a hole) after the remarkable window-like openings in the limestone rock formations that yield spectacular views of the bay and sea, the site is one of the most important cultural assets in the Western Cape. Innumerable stories of the perils and pleasures of yesteryear’s peoples unfold as layer upon layer of deposits reveal fascinating secrets of the tides, temperatures and living conditions of those early times. Later Stone Age pastoralists, believed to be the Khoekhoen/Khoikhoi, already kept sheep, and probably even cattle and dogs, in this area as early as 2 000 years ago.
They chiselled tools such as “needles” and “spatulas” out of bone to create ornaments, shell beads and pendants. Ostrich eggs were fashioned into water flasks, and tortoise shells served as bowls. These artefacts and bone samples are on display in the Cape Town Museum.
Unfortunately, the bulk of tell-tale everyday details of the loves and losses of man’s early ancestors is forever buried in the crags and crevices of this early home. Around 1713, a devastating smallpox epidemic claimed the lives of the entire local human population. The Klipgat Cave is of World Heritage significance and managed by Cape Nature Conservation.
For those who just want to relax we offer an array of spa treatments. It is time to tip-toe into a slower world where the mind can drift away on the vapors of luxurious scents, such as sandalwood, arnica and buchu, while the body melts under the soothing touch of our fully qualified beauty therapist. Pampering takes place in the comfort of your own suite. For the tired body, a therapeutic full body massage is a definite must, leaving you in a state of absolute calmness. For the weary feet, reflexology, including a footbath, will most certainly do the trick. Manicures, pedicures, facials and a host of other treatments are available on request in our Bloom Beauty Salon or in the privacy of the suites at Grootbos.

Trails are all well marked and you can choose between self-guided walks or guided walks, to learn more about these fascinating and secretive eco-systems. Gaze into the petals of a King Protea, breathe in the blackcurrant scent of buchu or simply listen to the exquisite silence that surrounds you.
Hop aboard the Lady Stanford river boat for a iconic and tranquil river cruise that winds its way gently along the picturesque Klein River, toward the Hermanus lagoon. No expense has been spared when it comes to comfort and luxury on board this vessel that most definitely stands out from the rest. A qualified skipper and experienced interactive guide, who intimately knows the river and all it has to offer, will ensure this journey is a memorable one. The Klein River features more than a hundred bird species which include majestic fish eagles, a flamboyance of pink flamingos and the ever spectacular, blue crane. Keep an eye out for otters, bontebok and horses grazing on the fertile river banks, as you make your way toward the lagoon. This is the ultimate ride from Grootbos Nature Reserve down the mountain to the top of the Sand Dunes. The trail to the dunes is special, running on a narrow sandy horse trail through the Fynbos.
When reaching the dunes we will make our way up and across to reach a fantastic downhill section where we will pick up speed before reaching the top of our first vertical dune face. After a briefing on how to ride down the dune we down the face but for those just wanting an easy ride you can go around the side where it is an easy slope. The dune face may feel impossible and dangerous to do but the ride is in fact very controlled and the sand will slow the bike down.
What your mind tells you is impossible will in fact be very enjoyable and easy. I will be at the bottom of the dunes videoing your challenges so remember to smile. I will also teach you how to do slalom like a skiier on a snow ski slope. This is excellent fun on a bike and not too difficult to achieve. After the dunes we will pick up a 4x4 trail down to the beach. From there we will head back up to the car park but for those who are already tired I can bring the 4x4 down to the rocks so you do not have to ride up.
Fat Biking is not part of the standard Grootbos activities included in your rate.

Discover the rich diversity of the Cape Floral Kingdom’s Fynbos on Table Mountain
The Cape Floral Kingdom is one of only six Floral Kingdoms in the world and is geographically by far the smallest, yet the richest, most diverse of these plant kingdoms.
It is widely recognised as one of the most special places for plants in the world in terms of the number of endemic species. Fynbos (fine bush), the indigenous mountain vegetation, forms a major part of this Cape Floral Kingdom. Mount Nelson offers guests a unique opportunity to discover the remarkable diversity of the Fynbos of the Cape Floral Kingdom on Table Mountain, one of the world’s Seven Wonders of Nature.
Enjoy a ramble along the lower slopes of Table Mountain with a dramatic outlook over Camps Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, with an expert mountain and Fynbos guide who will share interesting stories about the “Big Five of Fynbos”– the plant families of Proteas, Ericas, Restios, Bulbs (Irises and Lilies) and Daisies – and uncover many aspects of the natural and cultural history of the Cape and Table Mountain. There will also be plenty of opportunity to photograph plants and flowers encountered during the walk.
The Fynbos sunset walks will take place in the late afternoon so guests can enjoy sundowners from an elevated position on the mountainside, watching the sun sink below the horizon of the Atlantic Ocean, a typical Capetonian activity. The tour will last two and a half hours in total which gives guests the opportunity to enjoy a day out and about and still be back in time to appreciate this lovely early evening experience.

Welcome to the most iconic Afternoon Tea in Africa - a bucket list experience!
The Mount Nelson first introduced Afternoon Tea in November 1989. It was served in the lounge from the majestic Windsor Table. Our selection of over 70 fine loose leaf teas and sustainably sourced coffee from around Africa and a sumptuous array of sweet and savory delicacies carefully curated by Head Pastry Chef Vicky Gurovich and expertly trained Tea Sommelier Craig Cupido will ensure an unforgettable experience!
Afternoon Tea is served in the lounge, on the terrace or around the garden fountain.

TSWALU The Motse | Tswalu Kalahari Game Reserve
The Motse is the perfect camp, drawing guests in with its sociable atmosphere and generous-hearted service, organic-luxe design and nurturing, earthy spaces. Backed by the Korannaberg foothills, the Motse is in the west of the reserve, where the mountains give way to grassy plains and red dunes dotted with pans. Heading out to explore the area is made easy with a private vehicle, and the undivided attention of a guide and tracker to arrange game drives, nature walks, horse riding, meerkat encounters, hands-on conservation, or an introduction to one of the many research projects supported by the Tswalu Foundation. Between activities, the camp’s nine well-spaced legae - a Setswana word meaning ‘home’ - are private sanctuaries to retreat to, offering every imaginable creature comfort. Dining is a highlight, from a picnic breakfast and poolside lunch to a boma barbecue, a lantern-lit dune dinner, or the provenance-led culinary journey which unfolds at Restaurant Klein JAN on one special night.
A ‘village’ of just nine houses (three of which feature a second bedroom for children), The Motse captures the soul of the Kalahari in its design and materials. Private spaces flow effortlessly into waterhole views and beyond to the savannah.
The architecture of The Motse aligns beautifully with Nature to create moments of warmth and coolness, seclusion and shared memories. Bedrooms are illuminated by the sun rising over the ridge behind The Motse, and indigenous trees create pools of shadow. Each space at The Motse invites you in, just as Tswalu beckons you to explore and investigate your surroundings.
Luxury is a given when you are on safari at Tswalu. At The Motse, just 18 adults are accommodated in nine individual legae (suites) made from desert sand, rock and thatch, with every comfort imaginable – open fireplaces, outdoor showers, private sun decks, spacious living areas, separate dressing and study areas and wireless internet.
We have three family legae (suites) which have 2 en-suite bedrooms separated by a large lounge and deck.
At the main lodge elevated decks around the freeform pool, allow panoramic views of the surrounding Kalahari landscapes, and a waterhole popular with wildlife. A spacious lounge and dining area, library, spa, fully-equipped gym, impressive wine cellar and traditional boma complete the luxury facilities.
Motse legae
The Motse camp is a secluded ‘village’ of nine “legae” (the Tswana word for ‘dwellings’) including three family legae, accessed from the main building along wooden walkways which wind through the quiver trees and camel thorns. They are situated to ensure that each one is private and secluded and built using natural materials from the area.
Each thatched legae has an open viewing deck and starbed which look across the savannah to a waterhole which attracts a variety of wildlife. The luxury accommodation meets the highest standards of aesthetics and design but is, at the same time, unpretentious with a focus on simplicity and comfort. This is in keeping with Tswalu’s focus on land restoration and conservation which is honest, authentic and inspirational.
The Motse evokes a mood of intimacy, quiet, and authenticity, a home from home atmosphere. Interiors are cool and spacious with king-size beds swathed in romantic mosquito nets and orientated to maximise the views through sliding glass doors. Each room has a fireplace and a separate dressing area with ample cupboard space. The bathrooms have been created with private gardens, luxurious bathtubs and both indoor and outdoor showers.

With your own dedicated guide and vehicle, you can experience Tswalu exactly the way you want to. There are no fixed schedules or time limits at special sightings – during your stay, the dunes and grasslands are yours to explore the way you want to, and each wildlife encounter can unfold at its own pace.
Just like the sands of the Kalahari, we understand that your priorities can shift during your time at Tswalu. That’s why we’ll never try and shoehorn your experience into a fixed schedule.
Tswalu is unquestionably one of the best places in southern Africa to see cheetah in the wild – the vast open spaces and antelope herds of the Kalahari readily lend themselves to high-speed pursuits. Visiting Tswalu also gives you front-row seats for sightings of species that prove elusive elsewhere, from aardvark and pangolin to Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra.
Tswalu’s ecotourism ventures have a notably low ecological impact while also contributing significantly to the sustainability of the reserve and its achievement of its conservation and community upliftment goals. By remaining honest to our guiding principles, we can deliver a safari experience of startling authenticity.
Much of Tswalu’s beauty can be found in the smaller details: the ripples left by the wind on the crest a sand dune, a yellow flower opening to face the sun, or the tracks of a porcupine digging for roots. Walking at Tswalu gives you the opportunity to see these and other signs of the abundance of the southern Kalahari, as well as following the tracks of larger species.
Another exciting game viewing option at Tswalu is a horseback ride
Horseback safaris allow guests to explore the dunes and savannahs on our well-schooled and well-mannered horses, which are suitable for all ages and all levels of experience.
There is no better way to get close to nature and the wildlife. On a horse safari in at Tswalu, you become part of the landscape and many of the animals react differently to your presence. No-one who experiences this kind of closeness with wildlife ever forgets it.
Our equestrian guides are well trained in the Kalahari ecology, and will lead you on a true safari where you can ride alongside antelope, buffalo, zebra and giraffe, or watch them from a distance without detection.
Children are welcome on horseback safaris. Both trail and English saddles are available and every piece of necessary equipment is provided, in every imaginable size.
Children are welcome at Tswalu and the reserve is well equipped to cater for them. Tswalu believes that they too can be part of the conservation vision.
The youngsters will be introduced to the Junior Ranger programme and given a backpack with guides and tools to help them learn about the Kalahari. During their stay they will make their own bow and arrow for archery, learn how to identify spoor, and track game on foot.
In between game walks and drives there are activities at The Motse specially designed to occupy the kids while mom and dad relax. Tswalu’s stables will create a special “pony camp” for any child who shares their passion for horses. There is no malaria in this part of the Kalahari and the pool is a big attraction. They can chat to the rangers, decorate cup cakes and even cook their own bush dinner in the special children’s boma. A separate children’s menu caters for their individual tastes.
Babysitters can be arranged for younger children if parents want time alone.
The Spa and Gym at The Motse provide both relaxation and stimulation for body and mind, with inspiration coming from the savannah views and the use of organic materials both in the construction of this space, and in the spa treatments.
Join a group of habituated meerkats as they emerge from their burrows and warm themselves in the rising sun or meet up with them as they return home at the end of the day and groom and play at dusk.
Their gregarious nature and amusing antics (think early morning sunbathing and playing chicken with scorpions) have made meerkats extremely popular as subjects of wildlife documentaries. Our two habituated colonies have accepted the presence of humans without letting it disrupt the important business of grooming and foraging.
Meerkats are just one of the smaller predators which abound at Tswalu: aardwolf, African wild cat and caracal are also frequently seen.
Join your guide in trying to puzzle out the hidden meanings in millennia-old rock engravings of animals, birds and abstract shapes. Today, no one knows whether they were created as memories, prayers or maps, but their beauty and mystery endure.
Every moment of every meal at Tswalu reflects the culinary heritage of South Africa and is carefully designed to be as inclusive as possible. Sustainability is key: we forage for Kalahari ingredients and work with local suppliers who share our low-impact ethos.
We believe that luxury is found in contextual, relevant flavours rather than wasteful over-abundance. Our food offering helps tell the story of Tswalu – it’s inspired by and captures the essence of the Kalahari.
As well as being an incredible community of flora and fauna, Tswalu is also an extended human family of people from the Kalahari and beyond. We find strength in our diversity, and because we all share the same vision for the future of Tswalu, we can combine our energies and passion to make Tswalu’s vision a reality.
The Tswalu community consists of our staff members and their families, researchers, visiting doctors that support the healthcare centre, visiting artists in residence, and each of our guests, alongside a wider community of neighbours, conservationists and everyone who cares about the restoration of the Kalahari.
The Tswalu Foundation exists primarily to support ecological research at Tswalu. Through accumulating a growing body of quality output on the fauna, flora and the unique habitat of the southern Kalahari we have been able to make informed conservation management decisions to better support our shared vision.
This information has been made freely available to our neighbours and other interested parties so that, as we seek to add to our shared understanding of this rich and diverse landscape, they too can care for their land in the best long-term interests of the wildlife and people of the Kalahari.
During your stay at Tswalu, you’ll have the opportunity to interact with researchers studying both iconic and more obscure species and witness scientific conservation in progress.
Naledi, which means ‘star’ in the local Tswana language, is Tswalu’s back-to-nature star bed experience in the Korannaberg mountains. Elevated above a valley with wraparound views, Naledi is for the true adventurer who yearns to sleep beneath the southern Kalahari’s brilliant blanket of stars in safety and seclusion. Spending a night in a star bed, with nothing between you and the night sky, has become increasingly sought after as travellers search for authentic, unfiltered experiences immersed in nature. Naledi has purposely been kept very simple so as not to detract from its private and remote setting in the southern reaches of the reserve. Sleeping in the open, under the stars, is as old as time.
A balmy summer night is a perfect time to sleep under the stars in the middle of the Kalahari. The Malori is Tswalu’s under canvas experience with comfortable beds, an open-air bathroom and a spacious deck area for dining, dreaming and stargazing. ?
?
?Whether reserved for romance or for family bonding time, a Malori sleep-out is about tuning out so that you can soak up the solitude, tune into the silence and count shooting stars.? With comfortable beds, an open-air bathroom and a spacious deck area for dining, dreaming and stargazing, the tent is perfect for two but spacious enough to invite the family. The Malori sleep-out is one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences you will never forget.?
A night at Malori needs to be booked in advance, carries an additional cost, and is offered subject to availability and prevailing weather conditions.
From a late breakfast at the pool, a picnic in the dunes, a feast in the boma, or sundowners and snacks on your private deck... guests will delight in the delicious gourmet meals prepared by Executive Chef Marnus Scholly.
Working in partnership with Michelin-starred South African chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen, our chefs look to reinterpret the flavours they find around them and create unique taste touchpoints at every turn. Our choice of ingredients is only half the story; the context from which they come and in which they are served completes the picture.
Tswalu offers a number of dining options for guests who can dine indoors or out, in the dining room or at the pool deck, and can enjoy their meals at times that suit them.
Tswalu's wine list has been carefully selected from the best South African wines available and guests will enjoy the food and wine pairing menus.
All guests now have the once in a lifetime opportunity to experience Restaurant Klein JAN.
The opening of Klein JAN restaurant at Tswalu is the culmination of nearly three years of research by South African-born chef, Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen, into the culinary traditions and ingredients of the cultures and communities that call the Kalahari home. Creating Klein JAN has been Jan Hendrik’s great homecoming project.
His vision? To tell the stories of the Northern Cape region on every plate - stories rooted in the ancient wisdom of this remote, off-the-radar place of extremes and dramatic, vast landscapes. It is a region of South Africa where life is determined or measured by the absence or presence of rain, where resources in a year of plenty are carefully stored or preserved for leaner times.
Jan Hendrik felt an instant connection to the vastness of the Kalahari, and knew that the time had come to elevate the unsung heroes of the Northern Cape and their superior produce and products to their rightful place. Opening Klein JAN at Tswalu, rather than in South Africa’s foodie capital of Cape Town, added authenticity and sustainability clout to the venture, echoing the importance of local expression, provenance and procurement that Jan and his team have nurtured at Restaurant JAN in Nice, France, since it opened in 2013
