Debates rage as to where the best camp is located when it comes to the Masai Mara – especially
during migration season.
The Mara itself is not very large (when compared to the other half of the reserve on the Tanzanian
side – The Serengeti) but you most certainly want to be in the reserve itself instead of outside and
having to travel through a park gate every morning.
Mara Bush Camp is in our opinion in the best location and offers the best value in the whole of the
national reserve. We chose it for its elegant simplicity and the fact that it is slap bang in the middle of
the action which means we are photographing from the moment we set off on game drives.
Mara Bush Camp is situated very close to several of the River crossing points and right in the territory
of several lion prides and resident leopards.
On that note during the migration season we tend to be out on full day game drives so you will tend
to only be in the camp during the darker hours, so we have prioritised with a comfortable camp with spacious tents, great food and plenty of space in the communal areas to relax and go through
images.
The camp sets up an editing area for us on group trips with a screen and projector so that we can
chat about images and post production.
There is a reliable electricity supply for charging of batteries and basic wifi in camp. The food at Mara Bush Camp is great and they do a great packed lunch for the full day excursions which are taken under a tree out in the reserve.

There is something deeply primeval, exhilarating and nourishing about camping out in the wilds of Africa. It takes us back eons to our primitive selves where we were not cossetted by bricks and mortar nor detached from the sounds and smells of nature at its purest. It’s a magical experience.
The Pangolin Mobile Camp is by no means a self-flagellating experience of pitching tents, digging latrines and foraging for one’s dinner. It is a proper bush experience but with a healthy dose of “glamping”. The camp is set up in one of a handful of demarcated locations in the Chobe National park made available to local operators by the parks department. These spaces are allocated on a private basis, so the site is for the exclusive use of our camp.
We have five tents in total with additional accommodation for the camp staff and guides. The support truck that brings in all the gear doubles as a mobile water carrier, fridge and electrical source once the camp is erected. Each of the large tents have an ensuite toilet with a basin and bucket shower that is filled with warm water whenever required. The tent itself has twin beds with proper matresses and linen and storage shelves. The front of the tent has a covered area with camping chairs to enjoy a good book.
The communal areas of the camp centre around the fire and the dining tent, which doubles as an editing suite during the day. All the meals are lovingly prepared in the bush kitchen nearby and you will be amazed at what can by produced from an open fire by skilled cooks.
As we are in the national park, we start game drives at first light (after warm coffee and rusks around the fire) in our custom Toyota land cruiser with your photo host helping you to make the most of each photo opportunity. Onboard everyone has a window seat with bean bag mounts for cameras and lenses. We go out for the best morning light returning to camp for a delicious mid-morning brunch. The day is then spent relaxing in camp going through the images taken that morning with the photo guide or simply relaxing and keeping an eye out for passing game who regard us as just another part of their world.
After a delicious high tea, we head out again on a game drive in search of more photo opportunities returning just after sunset to the camp where you will be welcomed home by a roaring fire, chilled drinks and an evening of genteel camaraderie and delicious food under the African night sky.

The Pangolin Chobe Hotel was a labour of love over eleven months by Guts and his team working long long days and often into the night to turn a desolate abandoned shell of a building into one of the most innovative and captivating structures in the whole of Botswana.
Pangolin has always been an innovative company offering a safari experience above and beyond the normal “cookie cutter” safari. Traditional lodges built with wood and thatch are all well and good and certainly have their place but the Pangolin Chobe Hotel challenges the norm incorporating bold design with best environmental practices and a sense of welcoming inclusion from the moment you arrive.
The centrepiece of the building is the wildlife photography gallery, off which all fourteen rooms lead. The gallery features an array of images from our resident photographic guides and other top wildlife photographers who visit us frequently with their guests to enjoy The Chobe. Each image has been chosen to showcase differing photographic styles and techniques to inspire budding (and seasoned) photographers to think differently about their compositions. At the end of the gallery you will find the editing suite for post-production sessions.
Each of the fourteen rooms has been designed to maximise the space and provide plenty of surfaces (for cameras and laptops etc) and charging points galore. They are all en-suite and airconditioned with safes and tea/coffee making facilities and plenty of intriguing design features.
In front of the hotel is our deck, where the majority of meals are served, which in turn leads to the sunken fire pit surrounded by our eco pool. The fire pit is large enough to seat a full house of guests and is a firm favourite before and after dinner.
The food at the hotel is locally sourced and lovingly prepared by our team of chefs. The menus vary according to the season and all dietary requirements are catered for.
Overlooking the deck is the Pangolin Bar with arguably one of the best views of the Chobe River and Caprivi Floodplains in the region. The well-stocked bar serves up delicious cocktails, perfectly chilled wine, ice cold beers and a plethora of soft drinks and freshly ground coffees.
The hotel staff are always on hand to make your stay as comfortable as possible so please reach out any one of them should you need anything.
