9 Day North and South Tanzania Safari

At Sand Rivers our open-sided 4x4 vehicles are a great way of seeing things and for covering a bit of distance when that's what's needed. And of course there are times when they give you the best views, access and photographic opportunities to the wildlife that calls the Selous home. We do either two drives a day, in the early morning and then the early afternoon, with a wonderful siesta and lunch in camp between. In the times of year when it's not too hot we also venture out for full day game drives with a packed picnic lunch.

We like to retain spontaneity wherever we can. Often the best way to see things, to avoid scattering animals from the lakeshore, or spooking a herd of elephant as they feed their way through a stretch of lush grassland, is to hop down and quietly work our way into a good position on foot. Walking in the bush takes safari down to a slower pace, and is a chance to learn, touch and feel Africa, to get a glimpse at the incredible flora and little critters that call it home.

Being on the river - never mind the game - is a fantastic contrast to time spent in a vehicle. Drifting silently down stream, gently spiraling in the current, watching the river banks unfold is hard to beat. But here again we like to take time to stop. Creep carefully through paths in the thick riverine bush and you'll emerge - unseen - in magical secluded flood plains. More often than not there are treats in store; vast flocks of great white pelicans fishing in dwindling pools, wallowing families of elephant socialising, prides of lion sleeping off a meal.

Flycamping is a wonderful surpise, best left unexplained. If you ask us it's simple, you have to try it. This is a peculiarly East African passion and the way things were done in the old days; with the minimum of fuss, but not scrimping on any of the comforts. As is so often the way, when you limit the frills, it allows you to really see what's special and what's going on around you.

Watching elephant as they pass by your camp in the moonlight, silent feet in the warm sand, or simply gazing through the mosquito net roof of your tent from the comfort of your bedroll. We've been doing this now for close to 20 years. People's reactions vary, some find it quite emotional, others feel a child-like sense of freedom and release (one man ran round in small circles crying like a 5 year old) and of course quite a few admit to feeling a little scared. But it's simply no exaggeration to say that in all those years, virtually nobody regrets trying this most special of experiences.

As andBeyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is situated in the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, game drives take a significant amount of time to reach the crater’s floor and return to the lodge. This means that you will most likely be offered the choice of one morning or afternoon game drive per day. You will descend into the crater through a lush highland forest, with magnificent birdlife to be spotted among the different tree species. Once on the grassy crater floor, you may discover a large variety of grazing herbivores, as well as the predators that are attracted by this abundant supply of prey. Depending on the time of year, you may see huge flocks of pink flamingo around the shores of the shallow Lake Magadi, while the surrounding swamp is inhabited by hippo. While the Ngorongoro Crater boasts an incredible abundance of wildlife, you will most likely also encounter a great number of other vehicles during the high season, especially at high interest sightings. On the other hand, the rainy season is much quieter, allowing for a far more private game drive. Safari vehicles are closed, with glass windows and a pop-up roof. Off-road driving is not permitted.

Explore the breathtaking surrounds of the archaeological site of Olduvai Gorge, the cradle of mankind, best known as home of the earliest remains of homo sapiens, discovered by Mary Leaky. Move on to crescent-shaped volcanic ash dunes knows as Shifting Sands, which slowly creep across the desert floor in response to prevailing winds.

Experiencing the rhythm of African music is one of the most unforgettable experiences. This group of local drummers provides great entertainment to guests, whilst also sharing their unique culture. The traditional music of Tanzanian cultures is given its melodic drive by a marimba (also called a mbira), a type of instrument that is unique to Africa. Sanctuary Kusini is one of the great places in the world to see large predators - lion, cheetah and even the elusive leopard can be seen lying in the kopjes nearby camp. Between January and March the great migration returns and wildebeest and zebra cover the plains as they give birth to their young. The treeless plains in this area provide the perfect habitat for cheetah who have made his area of the park their permanent home. Our experienced guides know every inch of the territory around the camp and this remote corner of the vast eco-system never disappoints - buffalo, elephant, hyena and giraffe, all can be seen close to the camp. There are no other permanent camps round here so adventurous travellers can be sure of unobstructed viewing from our customised safari vehicles. Bird life is particularly good on the forest edge where woodpeckers and brightly coloured kingfishers can often be seen.

Most visitors come to Africa looking for the wildlife and the beauty, yet one of the most spectacular sights of all is hardly ever mentioned - the African night sky, offering some of the best star gazing in the world. In the evening, sit on a comfortable cushion up on top of the main kopje or around the campfire and allow the camp manager to uncover the universe. With a green laser pointer to show you the way, embark on a walk through the stars where you can look back millions of years in time and get lost in the beauty of the night sky. Weather conditions and moon phases must be taken into consideration when planning your perfect cosmic safari.

A unique activity has been developed at Sanctuary Kusini where guests can contribute to the Serengeti Cheetah Project by monitoring the cheetah of this vast national park. Venture out into this remote region of the Serengeti with your expert guide in search of cheetah. Your guide will introduce you to the cheetah's habitat and teach you how to correctly identify and photograph the cheetah you spot and record their behaviour and location. Your contribution to the project could uncover new movement patterns and aid development of conservation programs. Since Sanctuary Kusini developed the cheetah watch activity in 2009, guests have supplied valuable information on over 60 different cheetah, many of which had not been seen for years. In recognition, the Cheetah Project has named one long-lost cheetah "Kusini".
