The Siam Hotel Bangkok | Bangkok

A superbly designed boutique hotel, The Siam Hotel Bangkok is one of the most exclusive properties in Bangkok. Guests will be met by a private butler who will guide them around the soaring central atrium lined with priceless art and antiques, Chinese pottery, Thai heirlooms and colonial-era curios.

The attention to detail is meticulous with everything carefully curated to evoke a sense of vintage grandeur. The rooms are generously laid out with high ceilings and large windows, while the pool villas offer river views and private plunge pools.

Traditional Thai food is served in a series of historic teakwood houses, while the jazzy bistro offers international fare in a bustling setting. On top of this, guests can enjoy the spa, a large gym and a Muay Thai boxing ring. One can also take lessons in the cookery school, watch a movie in the cinema, retreat to the library or do yoga on the terrace.

The Siam is set on the banks of the Chao Phraya River and is surrounded by lush gardens and a riverside infinity pool. Although set away from central Bangkok, it is right on the edge of the city's historic district and has its own private shuttle boat running up and down the river.

137 Pillars House | Chiang Mai

Built in 1889 to accommodate the manager of the British East Borneo Company, 137 Pillars House has been restored into a 30-suite boutique hotel. The hotel's white-washed buildings are laid out in a traditional 'lanna' style and of which the former house is the centre piece, are set around a beautiful lawn on which High Tea is served every day. The original house takes centre stage and features the Parlour Lounge and a comprehensive library.

All of the the suites combine elements of a colonial era with rattan furniture, free-standing Victorian-style baths and black and white photographs of Thailand at the turn of the 20th century, along with a full complement of modern amenities. Dinner is served in the hotel's dining room, or al fresco in the courtyard and Thai cooking classes are available for anyone wanting to hone their culinary skills. There is also a swimming pool, spa and small gymnasium.
