Cathedral Peak Hotel | Cathedral Peak Nature Reserve

The Cathedral Peak Hotel is a classic mountain resort hotel high in the Drakensberg mountains of KwaZulu Natal. This is a well-run, well-maintained traditional mountain resort hotel runs like a well-oiled machine, with a range of guided activities on offer and stunning panoramic views.

The 96 comfortable rooms at Cathedral Peak Hotel comprise thatched garden rooms, spacious family rooms, superior rooms and honeymoon suites. The thatched garden chalets have television, telephone, fan, heater, tea/coffee making facilities, minibar (stocked on request), king-sized bed and en suite bathroom. Some have a sleeper couch for a child, some have private terraces. The family rooms have two separate inter-leading rooms sharing one bathroom. The new superior rooms are elegant with en suite bathroom, tea/coffee facilities, minibar, flat-screen television, under-floor heating, telephone and private veranda. Adjacent rooms have an inter-leading door for families.

The thatched honeymoon/executive suites are set apart in secluded gardens, offering a greater sense of privacy. All have king-sized bed, LCD television, telephone, mini bar, electric fireplace, under floor heating, spa bath, and private veranda with truly spectacular mountain views!

The hotel’s clientele is a mix of people just wanting to chill, families and keen walkers wishing to do some of the classic Drakensberg hikes. It is a little old-fashioned in style but if a stunning location in the heart of the mountains is what you want, Cathedral Peak hits the spot…

There’s a choice of two or three guided walks each day varying in length, as well as horse-riding outrides and mountain biking trails. Keen and fit hikers might like to try the 8-10 hour Cathedral Peak guided hike which is offered twice a week. Scenic helicopter flights offer a unique opportunity to view the breathtaking Drakensberg Mountains from the air.

Unmatched sporting facilities at Cathedral Peak Hotel include two pools (one heated), children’s paddling pool, tennis, squash, fully equipped gym and small spa, 9 hole golf course, trout fishing, bowls, 10 meter climbing tower and children’s playground.

Cathedral Peak Hotel is ideal for walkers and families (with the extensive sports facilities, trampoline, animal farm and many easy trails available). There’s an indoor games room for older kids with table tennis on offer.

Please note that there is a small supplement for South African long weekends.

The Cavern Resort & Spa | Northern Drakensberg

The Cavern Hotel is situated in a secluded valley in the northern Drakensberg mountains beneath the towering slopes of Hlolela and Sugarloaf Peaks. It is a natural paradise of indigenous forests and mountains, making this the ideal setting for an enjoyable few days. It lies adjacent to the Royal Natal National Park with its famous Amphiteatre view and the Tugela Gorge walk.

As with a similar hotel, Cathedral Peak Hotel, the Cavern Hotel is a little old-fashioned and very much a mountain resort hotel, but if a stunning location in the Drakensberg mountains is what you are looking for, the Cavern is a perfect choice.

The Cavern Hotel offers standard, superior or suite accommodation and we recommend paying the little extra to take the superior rooms which have a better setting and also TV and minibar. All accommodation at The Cavern is in attractive thatched buildings with en suite bathrooms and magnificent views of the surrounding mountains. Private patios let you soak up the sun, listen to the sounds of forest streams and relax in this mountain wilderness.

The Cavern Hotel is an ideal walking hotel. After breakfast, you can join the hotel guide on one of the morning guided hikes into the hills. Study bushman paintings, view the unspoilt splendour or swim in a ‘berg stream before returning with good appetite for a tasty lunch.

The Cavern Hotel also offers a wide range of sporting activities. There’s horse riding, mountain biking, quad biking, tennis, bowls, volley ball, swimming or trout fishing on offer. Relax and enjoy the view from the front lawn on a summer’s evening, or enjoy the cozy log fire in winter.

Similarly the Cavern is perfect for family holidays with loads on offer for children, including pony rides, a jungle gym, trampoline, kiddies pool and play area, children’s dining room. (Note that traditional family resort hotels in South Africa usually ask younger kids to either eat in the kids’ dining room or for families to eat early.) Family accommodation can be either in one of the family units with children’s rooms or inter-leading rooms. Younger children eat separately in the children’s dining room. At adult meal times a nanny is provided, free of charge, in the playroom to look after the children while parents are enjoying their meal.
