Camp Cuevas | Isla San José
Camp Cuevas is TOSEA's new program with the famous Cuevas Family of El Pardito in the Sea of Cortez. The Cuevas brothers Juan and Felipe are 4th generation shark hunters who have turned their unique marine life knowledge and tracking skills into a wildlife protection program. Juan and Felipe accompany the group on this 4 day/3-night program and share their extraordinary, bred-in-the-bone knowledge of the islands, the Sea of Cortez and its many diverse inhabitants. We go with them to find hammerheads, swim with sea lions, night snorkel in bioluminescence and meet the large population of Eastern Pacific Hawksbill Turtles in the mangroves near their home that first inspired their journey into conservation. Their parents and extended family on El Pardito will host us for two meals and a tortilla making class. Our camp is on a secluded beach on the breathtakingly beautiful Isla San Jose where we enjoy chef-prepared meals, daily happy hour, large dome tents with real beds, and plenty of kayaking and paddle boarding. A dreamy retreat into the luxury of nature – with some of its most passionate protectors.

Luxury Tent
Camp Cuevas has the same set up as award-winning Camp Cecil de la Isla and features large dome tents with real beds, lovely linens, towels for beach and bath and chairs for sitting outside. Each tent can have either one king bed or two twin beds. (Added joy: the housekeeping staff cleans the tents and makes the beds each day!)
The Sea of Cortez is widely known as one of the best sea kayaking / paddleboarding destinations in the world, and Camp Cuevas is a great place from which to explore the bays, inlets, lava cliffs and wildlife of Isla San Jose. Kayaking and stand up paddle boarding is included in the Camp Cuevas experience.
Juan and Felipe will take us to meet the large population of Eastern Pacific Hawksbill Turtles in the mangroves near their home that first inspired their journey into conservation. They actively protect these turtles from poachers and other threats.
We'll go snorkeling with the Cuevas brothers in a few locations, including Las Animas, a local seamount that attracts hammerhead sharks, fur seals and a vast array of other wildlife that we don't always see elsewhere in the Sea of Cortez. We will also do a night time snorkel right from their home at El Pardito, hopefully in the bioluminescence!
San Jose Xantus Cafe
The same amazing chef team that brings you all the incredible food at award-winning Camp Cecil de la Isla is now at Camp Cuevas! They have gained a reputation as one of the best restaurants in the vicinity of La Paz, a feat made all the more remarkable when you consider that they are creating all that magic in a 10x12 tent with a 3 burner stove! Meals include cold breakfast, hot breakfast, lunch, dinner and daily happy hour as well.
