Staying at Lion Sands River Lodge revolves about its location: right on the banks of the Sabi River. River Lodge is the very heart and soul of the Lions Sands Game Reserve area in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve. You will immediately feel at home upon arrival in the lodge: its incredible warm staff will make sure nothing lacks during your stay. River Lodge consists of eighteen rooms in total: eight luxury suites, six superior luxury suites and four river suites (with private plunge pools), all with their own private wooden viewing deck looking out over the Sabi River. You may not need to leave the privacy of your room to see wildlife roaming around River Lodge. The Sabi Sands, and especially the surroundings of the Sabi River, is famous for its record number of leopard sightings. Your luxury suite features a king-sized bed and large en suite bathroom (superior luxury suites and river suites also have outdoor showers). Of course, all suites are air-conditioned. The suite will serve as your tranquil haven during your stay at Lion Sands River Lodge. The communal areas and rooms are connected by wooden boardwalks.

Activities at Lion Sands River Lodge

For the ultimate experience in safari activities, Lion Sands River Lodge is the right place to visit. Go on safari adventures during morning and late afternoon game drives guided by experienced field guides and trackers. The chances of seeing the Big 5 are nowhere better than in the Sabi Sands. The time in between safari activities can be used for a range of other activities: relax at the pool, read a book on your own viewing deck or get yourself pampered at the spa. Truly unique is the option to sleep out under the stars in one of the Lion Sands treehouses (optional and at an additional cost).

The Victoria Falls Hotel, popularly known as “the grand old lady of the Falls”, is situated in the Victoria Falls National Park, a world heritage site, and is a member of the exclusive Leading Hotels of the World group.

The Edwardian-style five-star hotel, built in 1904, combines the charm of the old with the convenience of the new. Set in lush tropical gardens with lily ponds, palm trees and semi-tropical shrubs, it provides the tranquillity and seclusion that many guests seek. The famous Victoria Falls are just a ten-minute walk away using the hotel’s private pathway, and “the smoke that thunders” or “Mosi-O-Tunya” in the local dialect, is clearly audible and visible from this luxurious landmark.

The opulent Livingstone Room offers fine dining and dancing, while the Jungle Junction with its famous breakfast and dinner buffets has ethnic entertainment in the evenings. Stanley’s Terrace, with its clear view of the Victoria Falls Bridge, connecting Zimbabwe and Zambia, is renowned for its cocktails and afternoon teas. The Terrace has been a rendezvous for adventurers in Africa for over a century.

Although this hotel claims to be a 5-star hotel, we feel it is not quite there and food/drinks are expensive. What the hotel may lack in sophisticated service, is made up for with charm and history - a destination in itself and one of the most colonial experiences in Africa today. We recommend it for its location and views, and as a classic Victoria Falls experience.
