Just 10 minutes from the Park entrance, Mahua Kothi sprawls invitingly over 16 hectare (40 acre) grounds. Spacious guest areas welcome guests into the gracious, original kothi (homestead). Located within walking distance of Bandhavgarh National Park's main gate, the jungle lodge has been developed on the theme of an Indian village, with thirteen thatched twin-bedded cottages around an inner courtyard. There are two separate villas with further accommodations of eight rooms.

A spacious thatched dining room which serves home cooked Indian food and Continental cuisines, becomes the centre point of activities like campfire performances, lectures and star gazing.

The lodge has set strong principles of being environmentally friendly and every aspect of its development and operation is sensitively synthesized towards nature conservation. Since it is located close to Bandhavgarh National Park and to the entrance gate, (near Tala village) guests can listen to the sounds of the Jungle right in their backyards! In the morning you wake up to a symphony of bird songs, while at night you can often hear the alarm calls of deer, which alerts you to a tiger on the prowl !

A lot of fruit trees and bushes have been deliberately planted to attract a variety of butterflies, birds and insects. Due to such close proximity to the Bandhavgarh National Park, Spotted deer and the Langur Monkey can often be seen in and around the Lodge.

Forsyth is a small wildlife lodge set in 44 acres of jungle at the edge of the Satpura Tiger Reserve. Forsyth Lodge consists of 12 cottages built in an arc around the lodge building. The main building holds spacious dining areas, a library devoted to Indian wildlife, a lounge, several fireplaces and the Forsyth Bar. The first floor opens out to terraces featuring a telescope for star gazing in the evenings. There’s also a swimming pool that is conveniently close to the cottages.

A range of activities are organized at Forsyth Lodge. Jeep safaris, elephant back rides along trails, nature walks and canoe safaris are all activities arranged to experience the wildlife of the Satpura region.

Total 8 in number, the cottages are each a short walk away from the lodge and offer simple yet comfortable accommodation.

The walk from the lodge to the cottages is punctuated by many invitations to sit down and look at the landscape. This invitation is repeated yet again in each cottage. Walk through the doors to the sit-out where a plantation-chair opens its extendable arms in an offer nobody has yet been able to refuse. An eco-friendly swimming –pool (with virtually no chlorine) is no more than a stone’s throw from each of the cottages.

Total 4 in number, they are same as AC Cottages with an extended machaan terraces. For those

enthused by the sounds of wilderness and an affinity for waking up in time with nature, AC Cottages with Machaan are highly recommended.

Jeep Safaris Night Safari Walk in the Jungle Canoe Safari Junior Rangers Program

Cross the Denwa at the crack of dawn to watch the Satpura Reserve come alive—birds, mammals, reptiles and more. Look out for the impressive ghost tree, the frankincense tree, and more. Our naturalists, and trackers from the reserve, will stop and point out to you the bits of the unfolding action you might have missed. If you are lucky, you might catch a glimpse of the tigress who frequents this part of the jungle. She either knows the morning safari schedule by heart, or has a puckish sense of humour; every now and then, she will cross the paths between two jeep trips, and leave a careful set of pugmarks across fresh jeep tracks.

The Jeep Safari will take you through the Madhai meadow to breakfast at a pile of volcanic rock, overlooking a stream. You can also try the Jeep Safari for a similar duration in the afternoon. Set aside about four hours if you’d like to do this the right way—by the stop-whisper-peer-whisper-start method.

Night Safaris: The Night drives in the buffer zone of Satpura are carefully controlled by the Park management and are a fantastic way of looking for rarely seen nocturnal species like owls, civets and Rusty Spotted Cats and also the biggies like leopards and sloth bears. It's astonishing how many animals inhabit these human dominated forests. Night Safaris can either be included in the two daily safaris or as a third extra safari to be paid for separately.

The Satpura Reserve is one of only two protected forests in India where visitors are allowed the privilege of walking through a designated area.There’s walking, and then there is learning to place your feet according to the undulations of the landscape, the minor shifts in the undergrowth, and the many variations of mud the jungle can offer. Not to speak of the rather surprising racket that your feet can make across fallen teak leaves.

There is something to be said for experiencing this forest at human scale; when you are unmagnified by technology, dwarfed by the hills and by stands of teak and sal turned into cathedrals by birdsong. About the silence that precedes the moment when you ear begins picking up all the forgotten frequencies it was designed for--the entire range of jungle sounds from close by and afar. There is also the that addictive prickle of excitement that comes from animal encounters; ranging from a sounder of wild boar hurtling by, and the sounds of chital or sambhar jogging off, looking back at you curiously, but careful about staying out of range, to somewhat trickier meetings with sloth bears, Indian bison, and leopards.

The Walking Safari is best done in small groups, at dawn, or later in the day; a tracker from the reserve will lead, you in the middle, and our naturalist behind you. You will be put through a quick safety-drill—what to do if a surly sloth-bear turns up. And if you’re curious about the bulges in the tracker’s pockets, do ask.

The northern edge of Satpura is bordered by the enormous reservoir of the Tawa Dam which adds enormously to the scenic splendour of this park. In a wonderfully pioneering move, the park management introduced 3-man canoes for two guests and a boatman who will take you across the Denwa into its many little bays and inlets. Here you may observe, unobtrusively, animals stopping to drink, or shy marsh mugger crocodiles sunning themselves. You’ll need a little list to keep track of the birds you might pass on the sandbanks: sandpipers, red wattled lapwings, cranes, herons, stilts, and five kinds of kingfisher. Indeed there is no better way to watch and photograph birds. Most people are addicted after the first experience. On several occasions we have paddled gently along observing wild dogs hunting, or bears foraging for food and on one occasion tracked a leopard kill.

Spread over three days, this course is designed for children (and adults) who are interested in acquiring the basic tools of jungle craft in order to derive greater enjoyment and understanding of any wilderness. The course will operate for just about 2 hours per day with sessions held between safaris and in the evening for 30 – 40 minutes. It is a fun and interactive course with Forsyth’s enthusiastic and knowledgeable young naturalists. The course will cover use of equipment, basics of ecology, learning how to identify different species, using field guides and making field notes and sketches, identifying tracks and basics of nature photography. As an introductory offer there will be no extra charge for this course. Each session will be limited to 6 people. You can attend any sessions you want but will need a minimum of 7 sessions to quality for the certificate!

The Sarai at Toria is a small “eco-resort” beautifully situated on the banks of the River Ken. Set in 9 acres of grassland, midst lovely unspoilt Madhya Pradesh countryside, the Sarai provides a peaceful and serene stay with excellent home-cooked and home-grown food. The eight mud and thatched cottages are luxurious in comfort and each has a large bathroom, verandah and private courtyard attached. The sitting dining area commands a wonderful view over the river and towards the hills of the Panna Tiger Reserve. Designed for visitors to the World Heritage site of Khajuraho, the Sarai is also just five minutes from the entrance to the Panna National Park. These are but two of a number of delightful excursions available to Sarai visitors; others include a charming boat ride, various birding and village walks in the surrounding area and cooking demonstrations.
