COFFEE TOUR
Our coffee tour is available every day and is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about organic coffee plantations, the production and roasting of the beans and how to evaluate the quality of the coffee that we produce, a process called Cupping.
The duration of the tour is approximately 2.5 hours, and we offer the tour at 8:30 am and 1:00pm. The minimum capacity for the tour is 2 people and the maximum capacity is 12 people.
The price for the coffee tour is $55.00 per person + TAX and I will be more than glad to assist you to make the reservation. In order to proceed, I kindly request your confirmation regarding the preferred time and date for the tour.
Since it is an outdoors walking, people with mobility issues could find the tour challenging as the round-trip distance is about 1 mile and there are sections with uneven terrains and stairs (170 steps approx.).
We recommend sneakers or hiking shoes, comfortable cloth, hats, bugs spray, suncream and, bottle of water.
The tour requires at least 48 hours previous reservation.

El Remanso Lodge is a 16 rooms only "Boutique Lodge" located on in Cabo Matapalo, Costa Rica's Pacific Coast and is near the town of Puerto Jimenez. It is surrounded by a private reserve and is part of the Osa Peninsula National Refuge. Feel like a real Costa Rican sabanero (cowboy)! In the low pastureland before the rainforest, this 2-hour guided experience takes you across several creeks and up from open grasslands to a spectacular viewpoint and back. (The exact loop direction may vary depending on conditions.)
Your guide will be an authentic “Vaqueano” – a skilled, experienced horseman who knows the terrain well but speaks limited English – accompanied by a bilingual “Cowboy” who will translate, ensure your safety, and answer any questions along the way. The tour includes a snack at the lookout point. No previous riding experience is required, and the tour is open to all guests who feel comfortable being in the saddle.
Discover Corcovado National Park through the La Leona Ranger Station, with a scenic coastal hike offering breathtaking views, diverse wildlife, and a glimpse into the Osa Peninsula’s gold-mining history.
This challenging hike is ideal for avid hikers and nature enthusiasts, covering approximately 13–20 km round trip along the same trail. Due to the heat during the drier months, we recommend visiting between April and August.

GARDEN OR FOREST BIRD WATCHING
This physically easy afternoon tour, led by one of our birding experts will allow you to add more than a few of the more elusive endemic birds to your life list. Listen to the variety of birdsong and learn to identify common songs with the incredible birds belonging to them. Capture amazing photos of technicolor birds with the aid of the expert’s telephoto monocular lens. All within a half-mile radius of the hotel’s lobby!
LOWLANDS BIRD WATCHING QUEST
Start just after dawn to catch birds at their most active. Hop in the bed of a 4x4 truck for this up-close and changing habitat birding tour. Your expert guide will take you back up out of El Remanso and its rainforest and onto the main peninsula road to head down to the lowlands. Along the way, there will be spontaneous stops to point out exotic birds, hard-to-spot nesting and naturally camouflaged birds, and soaring birds of prey. Even Blue Morpho butterflies and maybe a family of monkeys may enliven your route. Your tour goes all the way down to the riverside pastureland, where you’ll see completely different types of birds before turning around and making it back in time for another delicious El Remanso breakfast!
The night hike offers insight into the nocturnal side of the rainforest! When all diurnal species take to their dens, nests, or favorite branch for the night, a different world comes alive! Be it frogs, snakes, spiders, or scorpions, the Night Hike packs a completely different view of the forests you explored during the day. The hike varies in its itinerary but usually goes anywhere our guides have their night-vision eye focused. This experience begins at 6:00 p.m. (around sundown) and you will be back for dinner at around 7:20 p.m.
This is a 3–4-hour full immersive Rainforest experience. Join one of El Remanso’s expert naturalist guides on an exploration of the onsite forest trails where you will learn about Osa’s rare and precious ecosystem. Armed with a portable tripod, monocular, and encyclopedic knowledge, your guide will show you trees several hundred years old; teach you the medicinal value of plants and other rainforest organisms; point out reptiles, insects, birds, and animals on or near the trails; and tell you stories from the history of the rainforest
It takes place on either the Carablanca Trail, Beach Trail, Waterfalls Trail, or a shorter version of the Ridge Trail, going through the suspension bridges. This hike is a unique experience that will take you deep into the tropical
lowland rainforest. You will follow the meandering river canyon up into the
foothills. This trail takes you to a place where time stands still and forest
giants stand guard over the river’s edge.
The waterfall rappelling tour is high on adventure but low on difficulty. It begins at a section of El Remanso not accessible on foot and continues to reveal El Remanso’s most unique and wild experience: Rappel down the face of four rainforest waterfalls, each increasing in difficulty. Don’t worry, we’ll start at the smallest and easiest; the final Big Daddy towers 85 feet and promises a true adrenaline rush! This tour ends at the beach; please follow the Beach Trail back to the lodge.
The zip-line canopy observation tour provides a sight into the canopy ecosystem and the different habitat it represents. After a short hike crossing the hanging bridges, you take off into the treetops with the help of your guides. With 4 cables and 3 gorgeous suspended platforms, the tour is ideal for a first-ever cable experience and guarantees a fun and exciting way to explore the roof of the rainforest.
A guest favorite! Get up close and personal with the incredible dolphins of the Golfo Dulce, one of only four tropical fjords in the world. Our “sweet gulf” is home to a wide variety of wildlife – dolphins, whales (August-November), rays, whale sharks (February) and sea turtles, among them. Most common sightings: bottlenose and spotted dolphins. Depending on weather and visibility, you’ll also go snorkeling or swimming on the other side of the gulf.
Tackle the three excellent breaks of Cabo Matapalo, one of our region’s most famous surfing beaches. There are waves for both beginners and advanced surfers, and our experienced instructors work with you one-on-one to develop the skills you want to build.
Within the unique setting of the Golfo Dulce, paddle into an activity appropriate for all ages, interests, and skill levels. Depending on the tide, your guide may take you to a beautiful beach (go ahead, stop for a swim!) and into the mangroves to explore local flora and fauna: fish, birds, rays and even dolphins abound. Located at an altitude of approximately 5,400ft (1,650m) and surrounded by lush cloud forest and coffee plantations, Chayote Lodge gardens are a haven for birdwatching. Here colorful flowering plants attract several species of hummingbirds, whilst toucans can often be seen flying by. Walking in and around the lodge's property it is possible to spot several species including the scintillant hummingbird, blue-crowned motmot, keel-billed toucan as well as parrots, tanagers, warblers, flycatchers and more. Enjoy our one hour morning birdwatching tour as our specialist birding guide helps to point out some of the local species in this area.

This full day tour is a must for birdwatchers with chances to see various spectacular highlight species in the space of just a few hours. At around 06.30 in the morning travel 1hr to the quiet local cloudforest village of La Paz de San Ramon, located at an altitude of approx 1,200masl, where a local farm owner protects the habitat of both the beautiful iconic bird of the cloudforest, the resplendent quetzal (seen here between mid-Feb and mid-May) and the striking three wattled bellbird (between Feb and June).
You will spend time searching for both birds on foot and by vehicle in this peaceful verdant landscape, with opportunities to also spot species such as the white-eared ground sparrow, ornate hawk eagle, white hawk, Costa Rican pygmy owl and the sunbittern (which is likely to be nesting along the riverbanks at this time). Time allowing, there will also be chances to visit a tract of forest where the long-tailed manakin lek can be found, as well as the local farm owner’s gardens at his home which attract a variety of local species of tanagers, chachalacas, thrushes, hummingbirds etc.

Painting a traditional oxcart wheel, famous in Costa Rica for its uniqueness. This is a traditional cartwheel painting workshop with an artisan artist from Sarchí, a town near Chayote Lodge where the oxcart is an icon as it also is a Costa Rica national symbol. Through this interactive experience guests will learn the history of the Costa Rican oxcart, the unique tradition in the world of painting them in such a colorful way and the reason that gave birth to that tradition. Each participant is given a wheel with the drawing lines marked, the artist teaches them how to paint it and the color combinations that can be used to achieve a better result.
