Horse riding offers a magically unique way to experience the surrounding nature of the reserve. At Gmunder, the comfort of the animals remains of paramount importance. Our saddles have been designed to ensure that guests and the horses experience a comfortable ride. These handstitched Western saddles have been meticulously designed and are softer and broader than conventional saddles. This is a proper bucket-list activity for all visitors.
E-biking is an easy alternative to a hike and allows guests to enjoy the landscape at a leisurely pace. Our e-bikes are designed in Namibia and made for the African terrain. The bikes are battery-powered and propelled forward by a motor.
Inclines, long distances and warm weather do not present themselves as obstacles during this activity.
The cleverly named SunCycle is powered by the sun and comes equipped with a solar-charged battery, thus making it an eco-friendly activity that is not harmful to the environment.
Game drives are offered at sunrise or sunset, making the most of the magical hues of the African sun. Warm cups of coffee characterise morning drives while the evenings present sundowner beverages with a view.

Kwessi Dunes | NamibRand Nature Reserve
At Kwessi Dune lodge, you’ll find 12 cool and comfortable (and air-conditioned) chalets- 10 x twin/ double and 2 x family chalets all with canvas walls and thatched roofs. Climb aboard one of our comfortable game viewing vehicles for a morning or late afternoon drive through the vast, arid landscapes of Kaokoland. This is desert safari at its most authentic, an exploration of towering mountains, dry riverbeds and huge expanses of red earth that have shaped some of the most resilient wildlife on the continent. Your experienced guide knows this terrain intimately and will help you track down the desert-adapted animals that call it home, including the region's famous desert elephant and the stately giraffe that move through the mopane woodlands with quiet grace. Along the way, expect conversations about how these species have adapted to survive with so little water, and the conservation work being done to protect them, including Natural Selection's partnership with the Giraffe Conservation Foundation. Sightings here are never guaranteed, which is part of what makes them so rewarding. Predators, rhino and lion also move through this wilderness, so keep your eyes on the horizon. Private vehicles can be arranged for families travelling with children under ten. A drive here is less about ticking off species and more about understanding a landscape few people ever get to witness.
Swap the vehicle for your own two feet and experience Kaokoland at ground level. Guided by an expert who knows this terrain intimately, you'll set out on foot through one of Namibia's most remote and untouched wildernesses, learning first hand how the desert-adapted wildlife here, giraffe especially, have found ways to thrive in such a water-scarce environment. It's a slower, quieter way to engage with the landscape, one that reveals details a game drive can move past too quickly to notice: tracks in the sand, the resilience of desert vegetation, the small signs of life that persist in this harsh terrain. For guests staying three nights or more, the walk can extend into black rhino tracking along the sandy riverbeds, following spoor with a guide trained to read the land. This activity suits those twelve years and older, and runs for roughly one to two hours. It's a chance to step out of the vehicle entirely and feel the scale of Kaokoland the way it was always meant to be experienced, on foot, unhurried, and led by someone who has spent years learning its rhythms.
Spend time with the local Himba and Herero communities of Kaokoland and step into a way of life that has endured for generations. The Himba people remain largely semi-nomadic, moving with the seasons in search of water, and continue many traditions rooted in their desert-adapted existence, from herding cattle to living in dome-shaped huts. Their bodies are often adorned with intricate jewellery of sea shell, reed and copper, a visible expression of identity and heritage. The Herero, by contrast, largely settled in towns and villages, and their striking Victorian-inspired dress, all heavy fabric and voluminous petticoats, tells its own story of cultural adaptation and history. This visit offers a rare, respectful window into both communities, guided by someone who can speak to their customs, beliefs and daily rhythms with genuine insight. No private vehicle or minimum stay is required, as this experience is most often woven into your journey to or from the airstrip. Suitable for guests of all ages, it typically runs for around two hours. It's a grounding, human counterpoint to the wide open wilderness that surrounds Hoanib, and one of the most memorable parts of a stay here.

Morning and afternoon game drives on the reserve are offered and can be booked beforehand or as the need arises while at the lodge. A 2-3-hour drive that gives you the opportunity to see anything from a wide variety of plains game or if you are lucky a run in with the occasional predator. Refreshments are included.
After an early dinner and depending on the weather we also offer night drives on the reserve. Different from day game drives by that you stand a chance to see some of the nocturnal species that roam our reserve. We look for all of them, from bugs to birds and maybe something bigger.
Guided walks are offered to the more adventurous. A short drive out, and then the fun starts as you experience a whole new way of finding and viewing animals. Be sure to follow every instruction your guide gives you and you will have a great time. Children aged 12 years and over may take part in a walking safari.
Keen on birding? We offer you the opportunity to spend some time in our hide, especially build for photography enthusiast or if you just want to go through the different species. Other than that we could take you on a short walk or to some of the other nearby waterholes.
