The Ngorongoro Crater, a large, unbroken, unflooded volcanic caldera is the pride of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The crater, which formed when a giant volcano exploded and collapsed on itself some two to three million years ago, is 610 m (2,000 ft) deep and its floor covers 260 km2 (100 sq mi).
Estimates of the height of the original volcano range from fifteen to nineteen thousand feet (4500 to 5800 metres) high.
Although thought of as "a natural enclosure" for a very wide variety of wildlife, up to 20% or more of the wildebeest and half the zebra populations vacate the Crater in the wet season. However, a side effect of this enclosure is that there is a resident population of Ngorongoro lions.

Many a childhood would have been spent playing in the world of ‘make-believe’. Within this imaginary existence many of us will have climbed and played high up in the bows and branches and, for the lucky few, built a ‘palace’ in the sky. It is this nostalgic sparkle that is all too visible in the eyes of the ‘grown-ups’ who gaze upon Tarangire Treetops for the first time. Tarangire Treetops sits serenely on the border of the Tarangire National Park - Tanzania.

As you arrive at the Lodge, you are immediately greeted by a blaze of colour and a host of smiles all of which belong to the local Maasai tribesmen who have become part of the enchanting story that is Tarangire Treetops.

Centered about a Main Lodge - which itself encases a thousand year-old baobab tree - Tarangire Treetops comprises of 20 rooms all of which are elevated above the ground affording views over the tops of surrounding marula and baobab trees.
Ultimate Rooms with Magnificent Views
Each Treetops Room boasts one of the largest bedrooms to be found in any camp or lodge in East Africa – with a floor space of 65 square metres – and all with an exotic double shower en suite bathroom. With furnishings that create warmth and demonstrate a commitment to local craftsmanship, the ‘up-in-the-air’ experience is completed by the open-fronted room design affording views across the Tarangire plains from an expansive but private balcony.
A Multitude of Memorable Moments

Famed for its vast open grasslands and exceptional wildlife sightings, Tanzania’s magnificent Serengeti National Park boasts 35 species of plains-dwelling game, as well as prolific birdlife. Perhaps most significantly, it is also site of part of the famed Great Migration, an annual movement of wildebeest and other herbivores across the Greater Serengeti-Mara ecosystems, considered one of the greatest spectacles of the natural world. Over two million animals participate in the Great Migration, with some 500 000 zebra moving ahead of and 200 000 Thomson’s gazelle coming behind the main players – one and a half million wildebeest. The Migration can be seen in the Serengeti throughout the year, as the wildebeest spend the wet season in the south-eastern plains. After this, they follow the rains north and west, eventually crossing the Mara River between Kenya’s famed Masai Mara and the northern reaches of the Serengeti. The rains then direct their movement back down to the southern plains, where they start the annual cycle once again. The &Beyond Serengeti Under Canvas camps attempt to anticipate the movements of the Great Migration, bringing guests as close as possible to the wildebeest action, as well as exploring magnificent resident game. The luxurious tented camps of &Beyond Serengeti Under Canvas move around the park year-round, attempting to anticipate the movements of the Great Migration and exploring the remote and beautiful corners of the Serengeti with excellent resident game. Using only private campsites, these mobile camps are entirely intimate and exclusive, featuring spacious safari tents, each with a double bed, ensuite bathroom and separate w.c, as well as his and hers al fresco bucket showers. Redolent of classic safari style, custom-made Indian rugs, crisp linens, sparkling crystal and polished brass lend flair to the simplicity of camping. Following a recent revamp, the camp now boasts even more spacious tents. With an additional two metres (almost seven feet) in length, each tent now features an indoor sitting area, thus giving guests more privacy. The day bed in the sitting area converts into a comfortable bed for children under the age of 12. With additional lighting, double shower, storage chest, luggage racks and safety deposit boxes, these are by far the most luxurious tents in the Serengeti. Carefully planned according to the projected movements of the Great Migration, the camps aim to bring guests within comfortable driving distance of the herds. However, the wildebeest masses move with the rains, which may occur at a different time each year, so it is not always possible to accurately predict where they will be. &Beyond’s expert guides will always try to place guests in the midst of the thronging wildebeest but, should the animals not appear when expected, the guides’ intimate knowledge of the ample resident game will ensure a rich game viewing experience.

Once a gigantic volcano, the Ngorongoro Crater in northern Tanzania is now the largest intact caldera in the world. Some maintain that, before it erupted, it would have been higher than Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. Today, long since having collapsed and eroded, it is an extensive highland area with the famous 600m (2 000ft) deep crater as its focal point. Nearly three million years old, the ancient caldera shelters one of the most beautiful wildlife havens on earth. Endangered black rhino are protected within its rim, giant tusked elephant wander the forests, black-maned lion stalk the grasslands and long-legged flamingo crowd the soda lakes. An estimated 25 000 large mammals are resident in this bowl of plenty, including a population of approximately 6 000 resident wildebeest, 16 rare black rhino and around 70 lion. Cheetah move in and out of the crater, while leopard are most often encountered in the spectacular Lerai Forest. Consistently recognised as one of the world’s most luxurious and elegant places to stay, andBeyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is situated right on the edge of the crater, offering unbeatable views of one of the natural wonders of the world. Perched above cool, swirling mists on the edge of the Ngorongoro Crater, the sumptuous safari suites at andBeyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge offer breath-taking views. Inspired in design by the Maasai mud and stick manyatta, or homestead, this is without doubt one of the most spectacular lodges in Africa. Three separate and intimate camps totalling just 30 suites are reminiscent of a bygone era. Steeped in romance, each stilted, handcrafted mud and thatch suite is adorned with graceful antiques, grand chandeliers and elegant African treasures. The bedroom, sitting room and ensuite bathroom boast floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the magnificent Crater below. Beaded chandeliers hang above large gilt mirrors, while antiques, billowing raw silk curtains and leather-backed chairs blend harmoniously with African art elements. Ensuite bathrooms with a dramatic centrepiece of red roses feature spacious showers and chandelier-lit bathtubs. Personal butler discretely cater for each guest’s every need, bringing tea in bed, stoking fireplaces and drawing luxurious bubble baths. Frequently described as Maasai meets Versailles, each camp has its own guest sitting and dining areas, as well as viewing decks. The domed dining room, with its fireplace, crystal, silver and massive wooden platters, turns every meal into a special occasion.
