Welgelegen House | Cape Town

Welgelegen Guest House is a stylish boutique lodge set in two pretty Victorian buildings, in a quiet cul-de-sac in the Gardens area of Cape Town - adjacent to trendy Kloof Street with its inviting bistros, restaurants and shops. Welgelegen is Dutch for 'well-placed' and this is an apt comment as the lodge lies at the foot of Table Mountain and is only five minutes drive from the V&A Waterfront or the beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay. Welgelegen is perfect for those seeking stylish accommodation with a friendly ambience, but who don't need the all the trappings of a five star hotel. The lodge combines both the charm of the Victorian era, with wooden floors and well-preserved architectural details, with an understated contemporary style. Bedrooms all have satellite telephone, air-conditioning, TV, bar-fridge, tea/coffee tray and stylish modern bathrooms. The breakfast room and sitting area are chic and modern with African artefacts specially selected by the Welgelegen's owner, Fiona Evans. There is a quiet courtyard garden with a small plunge pool, ideal for alfresco breakfasts.

Cederberg Ridge is a luxurious wilderness lodge offering delicious food, hospitality and adventure. The lodge overlooks the panorama of the Cederberg Mountains with its unique raw, rugged beauty. But this stylish ‘away-from-it-all’ retreat is within easy reach of Cape Town and the Winelands (2½ hours scenic drive) and only 5km from Clanwilliam.

It offers the authentic ambience of a modern African farmhouse with much use of wood, natural materials and earthy tones. Yet the striking steel windows bring a contemporary touch.
There are 9 spacious rooms and suites, each with air-conditioning, full bathroom, and private terrace. Add in the restaurant with a view, large swimming pool, and indigenous gardens flowing into the veld, and you’ll find that Cederberg Ridge offers tranquillity and style in the midst of wilderness.

Witness the natural beauty and hidden gems of the Cederberg through various excursions on offer – both for the active and the more laid-back. Take in the mountain views while walking or mountain biking. Learn about the rock art, history and rural culture. Explore the Cederberg, visit a rooibos tea farm or enjoy lunch at an alfresco beach restaurant on the West Coast. In summer, boating on the dam is perfect for the hot sunny days.

Back at the lodge, you can relax around the pool, have a pampering spa treatment, or enjoy story-telling at the fire-pit whilst gazing at the stars.

Canyon Lodge Gondwana Collection Namibia | Fish River Canyon

Second in size only to the Grand Canyon in the United States of America, the Fish River Canyon is one of the world's great natural wonders. But unlike its more famous big brother, you will not have to share the experience with thousands of other people. Its comparative remoteness means that it is little visited. It meanders for 160km through the barren landscape of southern Namibia, reaching a depth of 547m and width of 27km and geologically, it is in fact a canyon within a canyon The upper canyon started to form about 500 million years ago when a deep steep-sided valley or plateau was left behind during major crustal movements. This was then further deepened by glacial erosion during the ice ages. Later, a mere 50 million years ago, the lower canyon was formed by the incision of the Fish River Canyon into the underlying strata. The legendary origin of the canyon according to San hunters, is that a serpent, Kouteign Kooru retreated into the desert to escape hunters who were pursuing him and carved deep scars into the earth there.
We suggest an early start to appreciate the majesty of the canyon before the strong light washes the colour of the rocks away. There are several viewpoints, which give magnificent vistas of the canyon. You might also like to walk along the canyon edge to gain a perspective on its size as there is a track which follows the edge.

Sossusvlei Lodge | Sesriem

Sossusvlei lodge, shaded by camelthorn trees, is a testament to the ingenuity of a truly eco-friendly design as it crouches almost unnoticed in a vast ocean of sand. Adobe walls are shaded by canvas roofs, almost Berber-like in their shading of the cool slate floors within. With glorious purple mountains in the distance, and a passing parade of springbok, oryx, and Cape fox, it is surely one of the most unique settings in Africa. Dinners in the desert are unforgettable. You enjoy delicious Namibian cuisine seated in the open-air dining terrace with the desert floor stretching away to meet a starlit sky. The lodge has 45 en suite rooms each with its own private patio. Facilities include a terrace overlooking a floodlit waterhole, swimming pool, curio shop and bar. Camp Kipwe | Twyfelfontein

'Kipwe', meaning blessed in Swahili, is built creatively into the large granite boulders of the Twyfelfontein area and is found in the Beautiful Damaraland, Namibia

Camp Kipwe is nestled in the boulders, facing out onto superb scenery. Incorporating boulders, small red basalt rocks and mopane branches, it has a natural organic feel. The eight rooms at Kipwe are round in shape, with large outside decks to admire the view. The outside, partially open bathrooms adjoining the bedrooms have boulder, cement and rock walls, and roofs of rough mopane branches. Hot water is supplied by wood-burning 'donkey' boilers.
The central area of Kipwe Camp is raised and comprises four thatched domes; the reception area and curio shop, dining room, lounge and bar all with amazing views toward the Aba Huab riverbed. An outside boma area is an additional venue for fire-cooked meals.

A small swimming pool built into the rocks and a viewpoint with 360 degrees of beauty, are two attractive outdoor features. Activities at the camp include nature drives with the possibility of seeing the desert-adapted elephants in the dry season, Twyfelfontein excursions to the rock engravings and guided walks in front of the camp with Kipwe's experienced guides.

Grootberg Lodge | Grootberg

Grootberg Lodge is a landmark in Namibia for the tourism industry as it is the first middle-market establishment in the country that is 100% owned by the conservancy. The European Union funded the project through the Ministry of Environment and Tourism's Development Programme with a donation of N$4.5 million to develop the 12-room Lodge. At the same time, the private sector has been called in to supply the training and management skills until the community becomes self-sustainable.

The purpose of the Grootberg Lodge is not only to offer a professional service, great surroundings, extremely good food, well-trained guides and exceptionally good local management but, at the same time, to benefit the local community thanks to the revenues generated by the Lodge.

A variety of activities are available at an additional cost. These include guided walks, game drives, elephant tracking, rhino tracking and horse rides.

Okonjima Plains Camp | Okonjima Nature Reserve

Okonjima Plains Camp in the Omboroko Mountains is the main camp at Okonjima and has 10 en suite comfortable chalets nestled around a central garden. However the emphasis here is not on the accommodation but on their famous Africat rescue project, a non-profit project to preserve and rehabilitate large predators including leopard and brown hyena. Visitors learn a great deal about leopard and cheetah, and can view them at close range - perhaps track radio-collared leopards in in their natural habitat and support ongoing research, or visit the cheetah project. After dinner you can visit the hide to spot night creatures like caracal, porcupine or honey-badgers. There are a number of  highly recommended walking trails in a 'safe zone' for those staying longer. The lodge has an indoor dining area and sitting room, a pool and a large tea garden for relaxing during the heat of the day.
