Enjoy a once in a lifetime opportunity to get up close and personal with a rhino at andBeyond Ngala Private Game Reserve while assisting in the conservation of this rare species. This adventure allows guests to witness the capture and darting of a rhino and assist the veterinary team in tagging the sleeping animal for research and security monitoring. Groups of up to eight guests each (sharing the same vehicle) can participate in the entire process, from locating and darting the rhino by helicopter to the never to be repeated opportunity to touch the anaesthetised giant during the tagging procedure. Pangolins are the most poached mammal on the planet. They are animals in the shadowlands of extinction. Participate in our one-of-its-kind Pangolin conservation experience, and support us in this groundbreaking initiative to re-establish Temminck’s [ground] pangolin in a region where they have gone locally extinct. Intensive monitoring, using VHF and GSM/UHF tracking tags, is a core element of this project. Travel with our specialist conservation team as they locate the animal, replace the GSM/UHF tag, do general health checks, and gather crucial data.
Your Experience:
Participate in this privately guided pangolin research and monitoring experience at &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve, and you’ll be supporting the conservation of the world’s most trafficked mammal. In this interpretive and exclusive activity, guests will join a researcher as he (or she) locates one of the pangolins that has been reintroduced to the reserve. They will have the rare opportunity to observe the unique features and remarkable adaptations of these gentle creatures first hand as our researcher does a general health check, and downloads critical research data from the UHF tag attached to each pangolin.
This exclusive experience is available at an additional cost and is subject to availability. It will take place in the afternoon or evening in winter, or at night in summer. Guests need to be 16 years or older to participate. If less than 6 guests, a private vehicle needs to be booked. Guests will unfortunately not be allowed to touch or handle the animals.

For four months during the southern hemisphere summer, the enormous leatherback and loggerhead turtles emerge from the Indian Ocean at Sodwana Bay to lay their precious eggs in the sand. As the moon rises over the ocean, excitement grows as you drive along the deserted coastline in search of fresh turtle tracks that emerge from the ocean and travel along the beach in search of a suitable nesting site. Watch as the female turtle digs her nest and lays her clutch of up to a hundred eggs.

An expert andBeyond guide will escort you through the community and share interesting insight into the Zulu culture and its fascinating customs, beliefs and traditions. You will be invited into a traditional homestead and given the rare opportunity to witness the daily routines and lifestyle of a rural Zulu family. Learn about the family structures, how the homes are built, why cattle are so highly revered, and much more. Later, you will spend time with the highly respected local sangoma (witch doctor/traditional healer) who will explain the wonders of Zulu ancestry and their spiritual beliefs. The adventure ends with a quick stop at the Mbhedula Craft Market, where the beautiful handiwork of 43 Zulu crafters is showcased. This adventure allows guests to witness the capture and darting of a rhino and assist the veterinary team in notching the sleeping animals ear for research and security monitoring. Ear notches, as well as microchips placed in the horn, enable researchers to correctly identify different rhino on the reserve. Groups of up to eight guests each (sharing the same vehicle) can participate in the entire process, from locating and darting the rhino by helicopter to the never to be repeated opportunity to touch the anaesthetised giant during the notching procedure.

Indigenous gardens and flowing water welcome guests to the entrance of Villa One with its breathtaking ocean views. The Ellerman House Spa and two deluxe spa bedrooms are located on this floor, with Villa One on the upper two levels accessed either by an access controlled lift or staircase.
Level two (middle floor):
Sophisticated minimalist décor and a stunning collection of original art are key characteristics of the living areas, including a study, TV lounge, dining room, and entertainment area. The contemporary, stainless-steel kitchen has a separate scullery and a well-stocked cold room. A personal chef is on call to create breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner. The emphasis is on fresh, locally sourced, and seasonal ingredients. The chef can cater to any dietary needs or restrictions, food allergies, or children’s meals.
Level three:
The top floor has a reading room and three bedrooms, each with a spacious bathroom featuring infinity mirrors. The master bedroom (Aqua) has ocean views from the bedroom and bathroom. The second bedroom (Lilac) also has ocean views and a striking Balinese-style bathroom. The third bedroom (Yellow) faces the Twelve Apostles mountain range and is designed as a twin room with two single beds (all the rooms can be converted into king or twin beds on request). The reading room has a single divan for relaxing and enjoying a selection of books and magazines. This room can be converted into a single bedroom if need be.

There are three luxuriously appointed bedrooms each with an extensive open-plan dressing room, bathroom and separate W/C. The rooms are named Sea Point, Clifton and Bantry Bay, according to their geographical orientation and outlook. Each bedroom extends outdoors onto a private terrace with wonderful views.
Level two:
The top floor (street level) includes a glass-walled entrance foyer that opens up into light-filled living, dining and entertainment areas decorated in soft, soothing sea tones with natural stone and unembellished wood finishes. Fold-away, floor-to-ceiling glass doors on two sides seamlessly integrate the indoor and outdoor entertainment areas, infinity pool, and spectacular ocean views. To the right of the entrance foyer is an open-plan kitchen designed for social, interactive cooking equipped with a large central island, sleek timber cupboards, a separate scullery and walk-in cold room. Many of the wines in the collection are rare or special releases augmented by sought-after vintages bought on auction. Wines from the cellar are only made available on the hotel’s wine list once they have been optimally aged and are deemed ready for enjoyment at peak maturity. The Ellerman House art collection takes visitors to this fine hotel on a journey that explores the huge social and cultural shift that South African art has made from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. The art in this collection tells of the character of our land and the expression of our unique South African experience. From the time of the early pictorial historians of the midnineteenth century, such as Thomas Bowler, you acknowledge that this country has a flavour of its own – an essential nature that distinguishes it from other places. Communities in South Africa were extremely physically and culturally isolated from international centres of artistic innovation in the early 20th Century - a time before instantaneous globalisation of today. The Ellerman House collection traces the progress of pioneering work done in the 1930s by a generation of artists, such as Gregoire Boonzaaier, Maggie Laubser and Irma Stern, who were members of The New Group. Progressive identification by artists, such as Walter Battiss and Alexis Preller, with the essential nature of the land and its people - its Africanism, further reinforced the unique qualities of this land. The emergence of black pioneering artist like Gerard Sekoto and George Pemba began a process of cultural integration of the country’s ethnic communities into a unified South African art. In the Ellerman House Contemporary Gallery, an eclectic, outspoken and energetic generation of current artists such as Benon Lutaaya, Heidi Fourie & Blessing Ngobeni are pushing the boundaries of the ordinary in order to create work that explores relevant issues in post-modern South African society. The Collection records the spirit of the times and the development of art and culture in South Africa. Most of the almost 1000 artworks are exhibited as part of the unique artistic experience that guests can enjoy at the Ellerman House.
