Lagoon Lodge on Mosaic Private Sanctuary is an enchanting lodge on the edge of Hermanus lagoon in an ancient milkwood grove. Lagoon Lodge has a spectacular setting with views overlooking a bird sanctuary and lake towards the beautiful Overberg Mountains. The five shady, spacious en-suite stone and thatch suites are built on the lagoon's edge. Each has an ensuite bathroom with large tub and outdoor shower as well as a wooden deck overlooking the lagoon with its mountain backdrop. One is a large family suite which can sleep two adults and two children. Wooden boardwalks take you to the open 'lapa' area where lunch is served and the main lodge. Here you can enjoy the magnificent sunset over the lagoon or a drip in their modest swimming pool. Lagoon Lodge is very unusual in the Hermanus area as it has the feel of an African safari lodge with its open central building and use of natural materials.

The other big plus for Mosaic is the range of activities on offer on the estate.

Nature enthusiasts can discover the amazing Cape Floral Kingdom and its magnificent fynbos and birds by exploring the 933ha reserve on foot or kayak. The rates at Mosaic Farm include a guided morning nature walk and a range of sundowner activities (weather permitting). Hop onto their open 4x4 vehicle or a quad biking excursion and discover fynbos, birds and the pristine Walker Bay Beach and Nature Reserve where you can enjoy beautiful sunsets over the ocean. Between June and December, Southern Right Whales migrate from Antarctica to the shelter of Walker Bay to mate and calf. You can cruise among the water birds on the Hermanus Lagoon aboard the 'Spirit of Angus' perhaps enjoying an impromptu swim off the boat. Or try kayaking on the lagoon to view the stunning blue cranes and water birds in this natural wetland. Also included are archaeological cave tours to Klipgat Cave, beach walks and wine tasting at Springfontein Wine Estate.

However Lagoon Lodge at Mosaic also offers a number of optional activities (at extra cost) such as spa treatments as well as offsite excursions such as shark cage diving, boat-based whale watching and scenic tours by plane.

Mosaic offers birdlife, a beautiful lagoon setting and masses to do, yet it is only 30 minute drive to the picturesque fishing and resort town of Hermanus, and 20 minutes to the whale-watching viewpoints of Die Kelders and Gans Bay. As there's so much to do at Mosaic, we recommend at least two nights and ideally three.

SELF-CONTAINED COTTAGES
3km away the historic Spookhuis operates as an independent bistro/deli on the Mosaic estate, and offers some indoor entertainment options (television, extensive library, board games) in case of inclement weather.

Here Mosaic also offers four self-catering cottages about 3km away. Make yourself at home surrounded by beautiful natural finishes, wood-burning stoves, braai, stoep and a huge deck. However braai baskets, breakfast baskets and other food goodies are available at the Spookhuis Country Deli.

You will be guided along the lagoon edge and wetlands to discover intricate plant-animal relationships and the importance of conserving this unique floral kingdom.

Whether bird watching from a private deck or on a guided walk or quad bike trip, the birds at Mosaic delight enthusiasts. Over 140 bird species are home to Mosaic. Water birds along the shoreline are as numerous as the species that are found on fynbos covered limestone ridges. Just down the coast from Mosaic lies one of the most important archeological heritage sites in the Western Cape, Klipgat Cave. This cave system was formed millions of years ago and it is believed was occupied by humans up to 70,000 years ago. The KhoiKhoi people occupied this cave system and lived on shellfish and animals in the area at that time. The cave can be toured and an 8 km beach walk can be enjoyed along with sundowners on the beach and 4x4 trip back to Mosaic.

Between June and December, Southern Right Whales migrate from Antarctica to the southern tip of Africa to court, mate and calf. Walker Bay is the best place in the world to view these enormous mammals. This trip takes you by boat in search of the Marine Big 5: Whales, Great White Shark, African penguin, Cape Fur Seal, and dolphin.

Learn about the circle of marine life on this boat trip, that takes you to Shark Alley, between Dyer Island and Geyser Rock, home to 60,000 Cape Fur Seals. Great Whites are viewed from the boat and in a secure cage just under the surface of the water. The experience of being eye-to-eye with these large creatures is simply thrilling!

Flying over Walker Bay gives you one of the world’s most spectacular views of mountains, white sand beaches, dunes and marine life. From the air, you can comprehend the massive size of the Southern Right Whales and hopefully catch a glimpse of a calf learning to lob-tail or breach. Mosaic Lagoon Cafe

The Mosaic Lagoon Cafe’ in the historic 1892 Spookhuis is one of Mosaic’s great attractions. Built of stacked limestone blocks in 1892, the Spookhuis is home to our daytime cafe’ on the water, offering sandwiches, salads, freshly baked breads, muffins, pastries, desserts, cured meats, cheese platters, preserves, infused oils and organic vegetables. Gourmet picnic baskets are enjoyed in the most divine setting under the milkwood trees on the lagoon, or around roaring fires inside if there is a chill in the air. Select award winning South African wines from our cellar and pair with cheese and mezze platters. Or indulge in delicious cakes and cappuccino to top off your meal.

Oliver’s Hotel & Restaurant is a very pleasant four star hotel between White River and Hazyview in the Drakensberg Escarpment area close to Blyde River Canyon. The lodge is situated on the White River Country Estate and overlooks the first green of the 18 hole championship golf course. The Blyde River Canyon area is well-known for its temperate sub-tropical climate as well as its many scenic and adventurous activities.

Oliver's is especially well-known for its superb restaurant with fine wines from its well-stocked wine cellar.

There's a choice of three room types: spacious exclusive rooms, luxury rooms with verandas and executive suites which have a separate sitting room and decadent bathrooms also with private outdoor shower. Simbavati River Lodge is an intimate and friendly camp built on the banks of the Nhlaralumi River in the Timbavati Private Game Reserve. The Timbavati is part of the Greater Kruger Park. Shaded by age old Jackalberry and Weeping Boerbean Trees, Simbavati River Lodge comprises three thatched chalets, each with two bedrooms, and four luxury tented rooms all with en-suite facilities. Tents and chalets are comfortably furnished with eco friendly air conditioning or fans. Each has a well appointed en suite bathroom with indoor bath and outdoor shower (or outdoor bath and indoor shower in the case of two tents).

The lodge also offers a spacious lounge, bar, dining area on the deck and an expansive deck with breathtaking views over the river. There's also a small plunge pool for relaxing during the heat of the day. Brunch is served outside on the wooden deck and combine African and Western cuisine (with exciting new tastes for the more adventurous as well as more conventional options.) High tea is served just before the afternoon game drive whilst dinner is a festive event served around the campfire in the open-air boma, or on the deck overlooking the river.

Simbavati River Lodge offers game drives in the early morning and evening to ensure game viewing when the animals are most active. Game drives are conducted by experienced rangers and Shangaan trackers in open 4x4 vehicles, with excellent photographic opportunities. You traverse over 12,000 hectares of the finest big game country, with lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo thriving alongside giraffe, zebra and a variety of antelope. Nocturnal animals, including the big cats, are regularly sighted on night drives. Bird watching is wonderful, with various eagles, owls, francolins, kingfishers, rollers and weavers among the over 300 recorded species.

Simbavati River Lodge is a child-friendly safari camp with three family chalets available, each with two bedrooms sharing one bathroom. One of the family chalets can take three children sharing with two parents whilst the other chalets can accommodate two children. Typically children 6 years and over can join their parents on game drives. However families with younger children can request a private landrover and guide (at an additional cost).

There are three family chalets. Each has a main bedroom with a king-sized bed, the second bedroom with twin beds, and one bathroom with a bath and double indoor rain shower. Game Viewing

Game drives take place in the early morning and late afternoon when the animals are naturally most active. Key to the experience are your English-speaking local guide, working with a tracker from the local Shangaan community. This duo pool their knowledge, experience and fresh observations to maximise your wildlife sightings. Not only in terms of how much you see. But how rewarding, informative and fun the overall experience is. Your guide is often a keen photographer and will be conscious and considerate if your mission is to capture sightings on camera.

Your mode of transport, (or chariot as one of our guides likes to call it), is an open-sided 4×4 game vehicle with 3 rows of comfortable bucket seats in tiers. You generally head out with a maximum of 8 guests. This offers safe, yet close wildlife encounters. Guests sit up high for the best ‘spotting’ of birds and animals. There are no sides to inhibit your views and you naturally feel more in tune with nature. In the summer month, a shade top is added to protect against the African sun, but in winter it is open to the skies for the best bird-viewing and for stargazing.

Your guide helps you to interpret what you see. They also communicate with other vehicles by radio in order to keep in touch with sightings nearby.

Dining - Restaurant Dining - Boma

Several times a week, dinner in the camps is a more hearty, campfire style meal served under the stars in a ‘boma’, a circular enclosure originally made from branches. The cosy, lantern-lit ambience recalls the early days of safari pioneers.

Another authentic safari experience is dining out under the star in a boma (an enclosed circular dining area) around the campfire. This usually takes place every 2nd night.

The gentle flicker of lanterns, candle-light and a welcoming open fire truly conjures up what is magical about a safari.

Dinner is a festive event which is alternatively served around the campfire in the open-air boma or in the thatched dining area. Dinner consists of an African and Western cuisine with exciting tastes for the more adventurous as well as various conventional options.
