The resort’s walk-on chessboard celebrates our conservation projects. It features life-size pieces on a giant chessboard that players can pick up and move about the board. The game is entitled “Marine Life vs. Life Cycle of a Butterfly,” which arranges the King and Queen as Turtles on one side and the King and Queen as Butterflies on the other. To highlight the protection we provide to our beaches and to create awareness about the threats of marine debris, the chess pieces have been made out of 2,512 recycled flip flops that were found littered on the sand and on various waterways of Kenya. Sadly, these rubber soles are swallowed by the sea and then suffocate fish and other marine animals. They also obstruct turtle hatchlings from reaching the sea.
