A relaxing walk with the Bushman (San), sharing with you their ancient survival skills and secrets from their forefathers.
Arriving at the traditional Bushman village, you will meet the family who will present you with how they used to store water in ostrich eggs , plants for medicinal use, setting up traps, the making of ostrich and bead jewellery, etc. This is really an experience, always to remember.
The guide will do the necessary translation in English, as the Bushman will be speaking in their language.

The reserve has some of the highest dunes in this region, with views over the pans, characteristic to the Kalahari. Between the dunes, which are called streets, are the beautiful acacia trees. The Kalahari has more than 150 species of birds. The well-known suricate (meerkat) is also to be seen, although they are very scarce.
As the day draws to an end, a sundowner on the dune will await you, with refreshments and a Namibian snack, while enjoying a breath taking sunset in the Kalahari.

This activity allows one the opportunity to come up close to the cheetah, great for taking photos. The guides will provide interesting facts about this incredible cat and the history of the cheetahs in their care
In association with CCF(cheetah conservation fund), bagatelle are the custodians of the cheetahs, which are kept in a 12 hectare enclosure. Unable to fend for themselves, the three orphans namely, Ralf, Etosha, and Tuano are fed and cared lovingly by them here at bagatelle.
After this, a sundowner on the dune will await you, with refreshments and a Namibian snack, while enjoying a breath taking sunset in the Kalahari.

Set within the 7,000 acre private nature reserve, DESERT HOMESTEAD OUTPOST welcomes you with a relaxed natural hospitality. Enjoy the endless panoramic view from one of the 12 guest houses or from the main house with its restaurant, lounge and pool terrace, picturesquely situated at the foot of a mountain. In the adjacent plains you can frequently watch some animals, that are roaming in the endless savannah. Guests are invited to make use of different activities offered by the lodge, excursions to Sossusvlei as well as horse safaris and tours through the scenic countryside. The Outpost is located in a private nature reserve, adjacent to the world heritage site ‘Namib Sand Sea'. A half-day guided hike for experienced hikers, the NAMIB MOUNTAIN TRAIL is leading over mountains and through the plain . Starting in the early morning at Desert Homestead Lodge, the walk goes through breathtaking landscape to the Outpost, where a cold drink and the pool are waiting.

SOSSUSVLEI EXCURSION
• Drive to the Sossusvlei dunes in a safari 4x4 vehicle accompanied by a Guide with in-depth knowledge of the area
• Departure seasonally, depending on national park opening hours. Activity is possible in the early morning or afternoon ( in the morning preferably for photography – departing before sunrise. In the afternoon preferably for experiencing the dunes more in private, fewer visitors will be there)

The staff at Desert Homestead Lodge and Desert Homestead Outpost will be happy to organize all activities of other providers in the area.
An employee of the lodges informs the guests in detail about the start and departure times, depending on the season, as well as about meeting points, equipment, clothes etc. of the activities of the next day during the dinner.
For participation in afternoon activities, check-in is necessary until 2 pm. In the case of a later arrival, it is not possible to guarantee a performance or attendance due to the different start times.
EXPERIENCE THE NAMIB
DESERT ON HORSEBACK
For the more adventurous of spirit, Desert Homestead Lodge offers a unique experience where guests can ride out onto the private reserve and sleep out in nature. The reserve is situated in between the majestic red sand sea of the Namib Desert and the rugged Naukluft mountains.
Leaving the stables and lodge behind, an unforgettable journey set off through wide open plains riding over a varied terrain changing from soft, sandy, stretched open fields, to rockier mountain trails, through dry riverbeds, under social weavers nests and around camelthorn trees.
The experienced guide will eagerly tell more about the environment, fauna and flora. Riders are almost guaranteed to come across a herd or two of grazing Oryx, springbok, or Zebra and some varieties of smaller carnivores, such as Jackal and bat-eared foxes.
Riding takes place at a comfortable pace so that everyone feels comfortable. Slower riders can hang back while more experienced riders go for long stretched-out gallops over grassy plains while winding the way towards the tented Camp, where refreshments await for a truly remarkable sundowner with magnificent views. After watching the sunset over the majestic mountains it’s time to kick off the boots, relax and enjoy the Namibian night skies. While Dinner gets ready on the campfire true Namibian style a refreshing shower awaits.
Dinner is served next to the crackling fire whilst conversation is sure to revert to the days riding. Then it’s time to retire to the comfortable tent or even a stretcher outside, for those who prefer to sleep out in nature under starry skies to get some rest before the next day’s riding.
Riders will wake up the next morning to the smell of coffee brewing and bacon and eggs cooking over an open fire while watching the horses being prepared for the next stretch of riding. After a hearty breakfast, it is time to stretch the legs once again and set off on horses who eagerly await the rest of the adventure.

Opuwo Country Lodge is situated on a northwest facing hilltop just outside the town of Opuwo. An awe-inspiring 360º view of the surrounding area gives visitors a spectacular vantage point of the surrounding area. With luxury and standard accommodation, air conditioning, as well as well-appointed camping sites — the Lodge is the ideal base from which to explore the Kaokoland. Deck chairs and umbrellas set the scene for a relaxed day around the pool or a welcome respite from the heat after a hard day's drive. Next to the pool is the Bar and Restaurant where guests can enjoy ice cold refreshments and mouth-watering meals. The lodge is within easy reach of Kaoko-Otavi, Epupa Falls and Swartbooisdrift, popular destinations for visitors to the area. Road conditions between Kamanjab and Opuwo are in excellent condition (tarmac). The 85 km to Ruacana is also a tarmac road and in excellent driving condition. Fly-in guests are welcome. Please be sure to arrange for pickup before your arrival. The lodge is unfortunately not suitable for guests in wheel chairs.

Meet the Himba people of Kaokoland with our guide / interpreter on an excursion to a traditional Himba village. Interact and photograph one of the last remaining nomadic tribes of Africa. You will have time to ask questions while your guide answers and explains the Himba`s intricate traditions, customs and beliefs.

Epupa Falls Excursion
(The road might become inaccessible during parts of the rainy season between Dec to April)
This is a full day excursion, which departs at 08h00 from the lodge after breakfast. The excursion is conducted in a 4x4 vehicle. Driving time is approximately three hour to reach Chief Kapika’s village. After visiting the village you will continue for another 35 km to Epupa Falls where you will enjoy your picnic lunch packs on the bank of the Kunene River while marvelling at the white water rushing over the Falls. Return to the lodge just before sunsets.

Pick-up at Opuwo run way at +/- 11h00 by Lodge transfer.
Arrive at Opuwo Country Lodge for a welcome drink and toilet stop. Depending on your time of arrival, lunch can be served before or after the Himba village excursion, which normally takes +/- 1 to 2 hours. The lodge will provide the pilot with a complimentary day room whilst clients are on the excursion, alternatively he/she may join the excursion at no extra charge. Transfer back to the Opuwo airstrip between 14h30 and 15h00 for your return flight.

Epupa Camp consists of nine luxury safari-style tents erected on stone platforms, each with two single beds and en-suite bathroom. All tents have electricity and mosquito netting and an outside, shaded balcony overlooking the tranquil Kunene River. Large makalani palms overhead provide welcome shade from the midday sun. The adjacent dining room and lounge area also face the Kunene River, along with a lounging pool for cooling down from the midday heat, or enjoying a glass of sparkling wine while watching the sun set. The Kunene River plunges approximately 40 metres over a series of cascades stretching about 1.5 km, known in Angola as the Monte Negro Falls.
As the sun sets, watch the dramatic contrast of white mist rising from the falls against the warm red rock formations of Kaokoland. This is a truly atmospheric moment, ideal for photography and quiet reflection.
Enjoy sundowner drinks of your choice accompanied by light snacks served by your guide while taking in the panoramic views.
After sunset, return to Epupa Camp in time to freshen up before dinner.

Rafting on the Kunene River - Duration: ± 3 hours
Experience one of Namibia’s most refreshing adventures on the Kunene River. This scenic rafting excursion offers a unique perspective of the lush river oasis set against the dramatic, arid landscapes of Kaokoland.
Guests are transported upstream in open safari-style vehicles to the starting point, where qualified guides provide all necessary equipment and a full safety briefing. The experience is relaxed and unhurried, allowing ample time to take in the scenery, capture photos, and enjoy a midway stop with refreshments.
Choose between 2-seater rafts for a more hands-on, interactive experience, or 8-seater rafts where guides handle the paddling and steering, ideal for those who prefer to sit back and enjoy the ride. No previous rafting experience is required, although some light paddling is involved.
Helmets, life jackets, and dry bags for cameras and personal belongings are provided. Rates include guides, transport, equipment, and soft drinks.
This is not white-water rafting, but rather a gentle and immersive river journey, widely regarded as the camp’s most popular activity. Please note that rafting is subject to river conditions and may not operate during periods of flooding or very low water levels (typically December/January).

The Kunene River and surrounding area offer a variety of habitats for birds with ±240 recorded species.
For birders, we can offer three kind of experiences:
River raft on the Kunene River with river guide (for the paddling) and a birding guide,
Hiking along the river and at Epupa Falls with a birding guide,
Guided drive towards the mountains and hiking in a beautiful gorge with a birding guide.
Recently (May 2025) the Angola Cave-Chat has been spotted by our birding guide and guests. The Rufous-tailed Palm Thrush is a permanent resident at Epupa Camp.
Due to the nature of this activity it will be exclusive for guests interested in birding.

GUIDED HIKES AT AND AROUND THE EPUPA FALLS

* The crocodile trail is a 3 km walk upstream with a good chance of seeing crocodiles.

Admire the stunning views of the Kunene, snaking through the deserted landscape. During your hike, you will likely come across Bushman’s poison bushes with their beautiful but deadly pink flowers and large Euphorbia bushes.
The poisonous milky-white latex of these bushes was used by the San and Himba for hunting. You’ll also come across the makalani palms, mopane scrub, and the flat-topped umbrella thorn named Acacia Tortilis.

Dining at Epupa Falls is a relaxed yet memorable experience, where fine cuisine meets one of Namibia’s most spectacular natural settings along the Kunene River.
At Epupa, we serve three meals a day, with complimentary coffee and tea available throughout the day. Our bar is always open for something a little more exotic.
Breakfast is served from 07h30 and offers a healthy buffet selection including fresh fruits and nuts, cereals, homemade muesli, freshly baked bread, meats, cheeses, tomatoes, cucumbers, and eggs.
A light lunch is served at 13h00, typically featuring quiches, lasagne, or pasta accompanied by fresh salads. At 16h00, guests can enjoy complimentary afternoon tea, coffee, and cake.
In the evenings, depending on the weather, romantic candle-lit three-course dinners are served on the riverfront under the Namibian starlit sky, an unforgettable dining experience in the heart of Kaokoland.
Depending on the season, some vegetables used in our dishes are sourced from our own organic vegetable gardens, ensuring freshness and a farm-to-table touch.

The lodge’s hallmarks are luxury and plenty of privacy. This remarkable place is superbly suited for safari excursions into Etosha. The main building is surrounded by large, ancient mopane trees in a wild, but park-like setting. Upon entering the lobby with the bar and spacious seating areas, the eye is drawn through the open building to the vast savannah, where often enough the first animals can be spotted right then. The large infinity pool also offers fantastic views of the open plain in front of the lodge and the two waterholes. The best spot to enjoy the sunset with a drink of your choice. After that we will treat you to a delicious 5-course dinner in our restaurant.
Our spacious chalets have been integrated into nature with loving care. They are placed so far apart and aligned so cleverly, that there is no sign of a neighbor. Etosha Oberland is conveniently situated a 10km drive from the Andersson Gate, south of Etosha National Park – a good starting point for excursions in the Park with exciting game viewing experiences.

- Drive to the National Park on a safari 4x4 vehicle accompanied by a Guide with in depth knowledge of wildlife in the area. Departure varies seasonally, depending on park opening hours, and return around 14:00-16:00. The trips last for approximately 7-8 hrs.

Our Leopard ‘experience’ will take you out into the Okonjima Nature Reserve and will allow you to spend more time with our experienced guides and participate in the research data collection for our long-standing leopard project. Some of our adult leopard are radio collared which enables the guides to track them with a specialised telemetry device contributing to frequent viewing, giving visitors an opportunity to observe these magnificent predators in their natural habitat . Although there is a av very good chance of an excellent sighting, it cannot ever be guaranteed as they are wild free-roaming predators.
This Hyaena ‘experience’ offers more time to appreciate and understand the Okonjima Nature Reserve as a balanced ecosystem, with a focus on the ‘secretly social’ and rare brown hyaena. Since the private nature reserve was primarily established for the conservation of some of our more vulnerable mammal species, it offers an improved opportunity to encounter these relatively rare animals.
On this trail, no telemetry device is used to track the rhino, the guide and guests are joined by our dedicated Okonjima anti-poaching team who have spent many hours, getting to know each individual, dedicating their time towards the fight for the conservation of the rhino in the Okonjima Nature Reserve. This activity can only be booked directly at the Lodge.
The choice of going with the researcher or guide, will be determined by circumstances, weather and operations. Sightings are not guaranteed, as this complex, vulnerable species needs a gentle and respectful approach. Tracking on foot will be done in silence and maintaining a discreet distance. The Pangolin tracking is a specialized night/day (seasonal) activity. During the summer months this activity tends to take place between 10pm and 6am and during the winter months from 5pm to 11pm. As this would be the most active period of the day for these mostly nocturnal animals. You will join a guide and tracker on a walking trail in the dark within the 20 000ha Okonjima Nature Reserve. We limit participation to a max of 6 people per pangolin tracking. This gives the client insight into this secret life of the very endangered Ground Pangolin. A flashlight and walking shoes are compulsory.
This activity is reserved for guests that are staying for a minimum of 2 nights with us.
Experienced guides will entertain you with their knowledge, sharing interesting and enlightening information about the history of the Okonjima Nature Reserve and the research gathered over the past 30 years of conservation on Okonjima. On this trail, no telemetry device is used to track any of the carnivores researched by the AfriCat Foundation. Wildlife is the focus of the drive. Visitors are offered insight as our guides attempt to foster a general appreciation of the natural habitat of the Nature Reserve.
Into AfriCat – behind the Science will present the current research and conservation work of the AfriCat Foundation. This experience will complement all existing Okonjima activities, offering guests a deeper understanding of the purpose, methods, and importance of AfriCat’s conservation research within the Okonjima Nature Reserve.
Self-guided walking trails for those guests who want to spend some time alone in the solitude of the Okonjima 2000ha wilderness area. Maps available at reception desk.
