Our custom-built riverboats are built for comfort, safety and panoramic viewing. Piloted by dedicated safari guides, they also feature on board refreshments and radio links to the camp. Utterly unique, the Rufiji River game viewing experience promises abundant sightings of hippos (both in and out of the water), basking crocodiles and elephants. It also offers the rare chance of seeing a lion come down to the river to drink.
Our custom-built open-sided our person safari vehicles offer comfort, panoramic viewing, dedicated safari guides, refreshments on board, and radio links for fast location of game. Game viewing experiences, meanwhile are guaranteed to be unique: the Nyerere National Park is home to some of African’s largest populations of elephants, buffaloes, hartebeests, sables and rare African hunting dogs. Other easily spotted animals include lions, giraffes and antelopes.
To really appreciate the wonders of the African bush, you have to leave the safari vehicle behind and take a walk. Slow in pace and wide ranging in scenery, the Walking Wild nature walk is designed to offer gentle exercise and a fascinating insight into the world of African trees, flowers, insects, reptiles, birds and animals.
Your guide will be happy to tailor a guided bird walk to suit both your interest and your schedule. More than 400 species of birds have been recorded in the Nyerere National Park (350 of which are water fowl), particularly along the banks of the Rufiji River.
Catfish and tiger fish are prolific in the river. Considered by many fishermen to be the finest fresh water fighting fish, the tiger fish’s Latin name, Hydrocyon, means ‘water dog’ and aptly describes this voracious predator, which is armed with ferocious blade like teeth. If you’d like to try fishing, your dedicated guide will provide rods, boat and choice of sites. Our chef will also be happy to cook your catch whenever and however you wish.
Within a short drive of the camp lie the Maji Moto hot springs, this can be easily reached via a short walk into a hidden ravine surrounded by lush vegetation. Here hot sulphurous water pours from the rock and forms little streams, which gather into a series of picturesque pools cool enough to swim in.
Breakfast and lunch in the dining room feature a wide range of international choices; in addition to a buffet breakfast, we also feature a full English breakfast, in keeping with safari tradition. Lunch typically includes meat, poultry, fish and vegetarian options – the majority of which are sourced from Dar es Salaam.
Our table d'hôte dinner menus include a salad buffet, a soup, an entrée, a pudding, cheese and biscuits and fine Tanzanian tea or coffee. Vegetarian options are available as well. Choose a glass of wine from our broad selection of new- and old-world vintages, a fresh-squeezed juice or one of our fruit and herbal infusions.
This time-honoured tradition dates back to the golden age of safaris, and offers the perfect opportunity to relax and enjoy a drink as the sun sets on another memorable day in the bush. Sip a cocktail as you sit on the sandbank and gaze over the scenic river gorge.
No visit to our game lodge is complete without a bush dining experience. Immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of this world-renowned wildlife arena as you enjoy a bush breakfast along the river, a lamp-lit BBQ or even a romantic dinner for two. All bush dining events are exclusively catered to our guest’s preferences, and feature full waiter service and the guarantee of a dedicated wildlife-ranger presence.
