Ulagalla Resort | Anuradhapura

Ulagalla Resort Located in the North of the Cultural Triangle, 40 klms north of Dambulla and just 20 klms from Anuradhapura it is a convenient location from which to access the cultural triangle sites. Built around an ancient mansion, which today provides the public areas for the hotel, this is a truly luxurious resort. The 19 large luxurious Pool Villas (75 sq meters) are set in 58 acres of paddy land and lakes and each includes a separate living area and luxury bathroom. To the outside there is a private courtyard and plunge pool.  In 2019 an addtonal 5 Deluxe Pool Villas were added which have an additional dining are and a good sized private swimming pool.

The resort has been built with great thought for their environmental impact and generates 50% of its own electricity from one of the largest solar farms in Sri Lanka. The resort facilities include a swimming pool, fitness centre, business centre, laundry facilities, doctor-on-call, indoor games, billiards, as well as wheel chair access. There is also an Ayurvedic Spa. Transport between your villa and the main hotel restaurant, bar and pool is provided by golf buggy, alternatively bicycles are available.

Apart from the Anuradhapura Heritage site, which is nearby, guests can also access the other cultural sites, such as Sigiriya and Pollonnaruwa, within a couple of hours drive. Within the resort itself, there are bicycles for exploring the vast property, as well as Horse Riding, and Bird watching.

In our opinion this is a great hotel and the accommodation is of a very high standard - the best in the Cultural Triangle.  The villas provide good privacy and the Nikawena Villa, with 2 bedrooms is perfect for families and has the benefit of an oversized private plunge pool. Travel Gallery has an agreement to allow 2 children in the living area of the villas under the age of 12 years.

Cape Weligama Resort | Weligama

The 40 free standing villas and suites are set within the landscaped grounds and are perched 36m above the sea, providing excellent views. The elegantly designed villas and suites have a contemporary style with lavish ocean facing bathrooms. Stone-encased Wattas (gardens) and Walauwas (mansions) form the intimate collections of villas and suites, measure between 130 and 300 square meters. Each property comes with private butler services, bespoke dining and spa facilities. Named after eminent Ceylon explorers and writers, they are the heart and soul of the resort. Wattas, clusters of two to three free standing garden-wrapped villas also share a 15m infinity pool. The suites in the Walauwas have direct access to the expansive, meandering, pool. The 3 Cape Weligama Residences 307 sqm each have two bedrooms, a living room and a private 15m x 4m pool, whereas the other villas have one bedroom, a living room and vary in size between 130 and 195 square meters.

In our opinion, this hotel provides the highest standard of accommodation, food and service on the South Coast. The cliff location affords amazing views but we consider the beach access to be very disappointing, which is the main downside of the property if you want to be able to use the beach.
