Hog Hollow restaurant
Hog Hollow dining caters for in-house guests only.
The choice of dining around the communal candle-lit main table, or to be seated separately, or even outside on a balmy African evening, is yours.
We offer an optional set three course dinner each evening. There is always a choice of starter and main courses, a vegetarian menu, and the chefs can cater for almost all dietary requirements: wheat intolerance, diabetic diets, vegans, etc.
Our kitchen is not Kosher or Halaal, but we have successfully accommodated these specific dietary requirements. We do, obviously need to know these requirements in advance.
We also offer a range of children-friendly dishes. Light lunches are served on request too.
For those opting to eat out, we assist our guests to make reservations at the variety of restaurants in and around the area.

The main lodge at five-star Kichaka Lodge is constructed in natural stone and thatch which blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. The lodge was extensively re-built in 2020. The décor of the new Kichaka is a modern uptake of traditional safari and colonial style and the ambiance created is one of comfortable elegance.
There is a sociable cocktail bar and sitting area, opening up onto a viewing deck overlooking the waterhole. There is a stately dining room as well as outdoor dining on the large main deck, and fireside dinners are held in the atmospheric boma on clear evenings. The upstairs library area has been enlarged and provides many cosy corners to relax in.
There is a rim-flow swimming pool set on the edge of the main deck, so the water in the pool blurs seamlessly with the waterhole. The spa, set above the waterhole, boasts floor-to-ceiling, panoramic windows – enabling guests to peer out at the nearby ‘hippo hollow’ in absolute privacy. Kichaka Lodge also boasts a well-equipped gym. The 10 suites have an enormous bath, rain shower head and “his & hers” basins. Each suite has a private deck with heated plunge pool and an outside shower.

Lalibela is a conservation project that currently consists of 10,500 hectares (approximately 26,000 acres) and is home to the Big 5 (lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo & leopard) as well as other predators like cheetah, hyena, jackal & lynx.
Unique to our area of South Africa, we are blessed with vast areas Savannah Grassland, the biome that has by far the highest carrying capacity – this means that we are able to sustain truly vast herds of plains game like zebra, impala, wildebeest, red hartebeest, blesbuck and eland. This, in turn, allows us to sustain a remarkable density of free-roaming lions.

Game viewing is carried out during the morning and evening when you are guided by your game ranger in an open game viewing vehicle. If you have a particular interest, please mention it to your ranger; who will be happy to merge your plans with those of the group.
The game drives will take between three and four hours, with a sundowner stop at sunset and a coffee stop in the morning. The evening game drives usually return to the lodge after dark. Game drive times are seasonally adjusted. It is always advisable to bring warm clothing along, even in summer. Please do not forget to bring your binoculars, cameras and sunhat along.
Optional late-night game drives by arrangement with the lodge at an additional cost.
Big 5 Walking safaris:
Guests have the option of booking a Big 5 Walking safari during their stay at Lalibela. This will take place on the main reserve where guests may encounter Big 5 animals on their walk. Walks are led by our qualified rangers.
- Big 5 walks (Ages 16-65). - Weather dependent therefore you are required to book during your stay. - Bush walks are an additional cost. Guests to settle direct with the lodge.
Soft Walking Safaris (Non-Big 5 area):
Not only did the “Big 5 area” of Lalibela increase in size, but the acquisition of an additional 2,000 hectares adjacent to the existing Big 5 area, means that Lalibela now has a pristine wilderness range that will be used as a breeding area, and to reintroduce endemic game species to the Eastern Cape.
In this new predator-free area, “soft” walking safaris have been introduced. This breeding area offers a more relaxed “on foot” safari experience for the whole family where you can get up close and personal with game such as zebra, giraffe, warthog and various antelope in a safe environment.
- Soft walks in Non-Big 5 area (All ages). - Weather dependent therefore you are required to book during your stay. - Bush walks are an additional cost. Guests to settle direct with the lodge.
One of the wonderful benefits of a safari is having the time to relax and re-connect with yourself. With this in mind, the luxurious and peaceful spa at Kichaka Lodge offers a range of wellness and rejuvenation treatments for you to enjoy between your game activities. In designing this spa, an extensive effort has been made for the aesthetic and ambiance to remain close to what we believe an African safari experience should be. Built with natural stone and thatch and set above the waterhole, the spa has floor-to-ceiling, panoramic windows – enabling you to peer out at the nearby ‘hippo hollow’ in absolute privacy.
A general treatment room, a sauna, a steam room and a couple’s treatment room provide the ultimate escape and a sanctuary for the senses. Qualified therapists offer a holistic and healing approach, and will happily customise treatments to the needs of each guest. The Lalibela wellness philosophy is sure to leave you at harmony with yourself and your environment.
All spa treatments are at an additional cost and can be booked with the spa therapist.
