Pontoon 1, 2 and 3 Campsites can accommodate a maximum of 20, 6 and 6 people each. They are extremely popular campsites mainly due to their stunning location in an evergreen forest overlooking a swamp clearing favoured by sitatunga. As well as the close proximity to the Bat Forest and Fibwe Hide. All campsites have access to toilets and showers. Water - hot and cold - is provided by the campsite attendants.
Nsobe Campsite is set on the edge of the Chimbwe Plain woodlands, and equipped with hot showers and flushing toilets, this camp boasts frequent sightings of black lechwe, and is also the perfect base from which to go canoeing on the swamps. It will also serve as a base to access Shoebill Island.

Lumangwe Falls on the Kalungwishi River in northern Zambia is the largest waterfall wholly within that country, with a height of 40 m and a width of 160 m. At the river's height at the end of the rainy season in April/May, spray from the waterfall may be carried 100 m into the air and the roaring sound in the gorge below seems to shake the ground. Lumangwe Falls are reached via a 10 km earth road which turns west from the Kawambwa-Mporokoso gravel road 2.5 km north-east of the Kalungwishi bridge at Chipempe. The falls can be viewed from the bank of the river at the top and from a cliff almost opposite the drop. Paths lead to the foot of the falls and also down the gorge to Kabwelume Falls 6 km downstream.

During the peak season the lodge accesses the national park via its own pontoon. Central to the lodge is a spacious bar and dining area. Built around a semi-evergreen wild mango tree and thatched in the traditional style, it offers superb panoramic views over the Luangwa River and the South Luangwa National Park. Great game viewing and bird watching from the lodge is guaranteed. Adjacent to the bar is a refreshing infinity pool and the only natural hot spring tub in the Luangwa Valley. South Luangwa is the birthplace of walking safaris. Bush walks bring another dimension to a safari, focusing on smaller things, birds and flora while observing animals in the distance. Bush walks are not strenuous, but can take place over rugged terrain, lasting usually 3 to 4 hours. Qualified walking guides and escort scout are a must. Unfortunately children under the age of 12 are not authorised to participate.

Game drives take place every morning and afternoon and are accompanied by Kafunta’s qualified safari guides. During these safari activities we take you through the South Luangwa National Park in open 4×4 vehicles, where you are able to observe indigenous mammals and birds of Zambia as well as migrant birds.
The morning safari starts at sunrise after a light breakfast. In the briskness of the morning with its special light you are able to observe the abundance of wildlife of the South Luangwa National Park. During the safari we stop for a short tea-break and return to the lodge for a delicious brunch around 10:30 o’clock.
The walking safaris are a great opportunity to be at one with nature. Our qualified and highly experienced safari guides and armed national park rangers will escort you safely into the true and unspoilt African bush during these safari activities. The Luangwa Valley is one of the few places in Africa where it is possible to walk amongst wildlife, which allows you to fully immerse yourself in African impressions, smells and sounds.
During this activity our guides provide you with detailed explanations of spoors, vegetation and the ecology in general – an unmatched wildlife experience that will leave you with lifelong memories.
Our night drives provide the unique opportunity to see a great variety of nocturnal animals and the chance to see lions and leopards as well as other predators in their time of activity and with a bit of luck you might even experience the big cats hunting. The safari starts in the late afternoon and we stop half way through for sundowners while watching the magnificent African sunset, continuing the safari after dusk to see what the night has to offer us.
The night drives are accompanied by our experienced safari guides and spotters, who are skilled in finding a great variety of nocturnal game with the powerful spotlight. We return to the lodge around 20:00 for dinner where you will be able to regale everyone with the day’s events.
South Luangwa National Park, boasts over 420 of Zambia’s 732 species of birds. This includes 39 types of birds of prey and 47 migrant species so whatever the season, the South Luangwa National Park is an excellent bird watching destination. Our guides will lead your personalised safari.
The most recommended and interesting time for bird watching is from November to May when the birds have their breeding plumage and the migrant birds visit the Luangwa Valley.
Taking your family on safari is a unique and unforgettable experience that brings families closer together and enables you to enjoy the unspoilt Zambian bush with your loved ones. Especially our younger guests who are fascinated by the wildlife and eager to learn about wildlife habitat and the habits of animals.
Keeping other guests’ comfort and relaxation in mind, we cater for families with children under the age of 12 with their own game drive vehicles and separate tables at mealtimes during these custom made safaris.
Children must be 12 years old and older to participate in walking safaris.
