Imagine a smattering of billowing white tents, shaded by desert palms and surrounded by a thousand acres of shimmering, sparkling nothingness. You’ve just dreamt up San Camp, our impossibly romantic, seven-bedroom camp on the edge of the Nwetwe Pan in Botswana’s Makgadikgadi. San isn’t a place for frills and fluffiness. The magic is in the minimalism, both at the camp and in the mysterious desert landscape. You can forget the tourist crowds and over-stuffed 4x4s too; it’s just you, the wildlife, and a handful of local San Bushmen, waiting to share their secrets with you.
Of all the Makgadikgadi pans, we think Nwetwe is the most iconic. Meerkats pop up from the desert dust, brown hyaena hide in the grass, and you’ll see red hartebeest, springbok and gemsbok scurrying between them. But San Camp isn’t just about wildlife-watching – it’s about the atmosphere and the ethereal surroundings. Disappear into a remote world, a million miles from glowing screens and fruit-themed devices, where the 360-degree panoramas are so vast, you can see the curvature of the earth…

Imagine a seemingly endless expanse of flat, white salt that stretches as far as the eye can see. The landscape is stark, surreal, and utterly captivating. It's an almost lunar-like environment that is so remote, both sound and light pollution are non-existent. It's here that Desert & Delta Safaris bring guests for its iconic Makgadikgadi Salt Pans Sleep-Out Expedition. It is essential to understand that this experience is deeply rooted in nature. Guests sleep under the open sky with no tent. There is a comfortable setup with bedding, blankets, and a bonfire for warmth. There’s no running water or WiFi. Guests will be disconnected from technology to embrace nature fully. In case of emergencies, there is a satellite phone. This is a safe, fully guided excursion from Leroo La Tau, with the team on hand to help set up camp, prepare meals, and ensure that on departure, the site is as untouched as it was found it. Inclusive for Leroo La Tau guests staying three nights or more between 15 June and 31 October. Transportation to the pans is via game vehicle (3-4 hour drive) or scenic helicopter flight (surcharges apply for heli trips).

Set in a palm-dotted oasis in Botswana’s Makgadikgadi, Jack’s Camp is one of Africa’s most iconic safari experiences. This legendary camp blends 1940s explorer style with the surreal beauty of the Kalahari’s vast salt pans, creating a setting that feels timeless and extraordinary.
Founded in honour of safari pioneer Jack Bousfield, the camp celebrates the spirit of exploration. Nine canvas tents are richly styled with Persian rugs, mahogany campaign furniture and colourful textiles, evoking the golden age of safari while offering modern comfort. At the centre of camp, the famous Persian tea tent, pool pavilion, curio shop and Natural History Museum add to the sense of discovery, filled with artefacts and stories that reflect the history and natural wonders of the Makgadikgadi.
With exceptional guiding and desert experiences – from walking with habituated meerkats as they emerge at sunrise to quad biking across the salt pans in the dry season – Jack’s Camp offers a safari that is fascinating and unforgettable. Game drives reveal the surprising wildlife of this desert landscape, while time spent with the San bushmen provides insight into one of the oldest cultures on earth. Few places capture the romance, curiosity and adventure of safari quite like Jack’s Camp.
