The Moorings | Zambia

The campsite is located on the Moorings Farm, which has been in continuous operation since 1920. A short drive from the tar road, down 2 km on a well-maintained dirt road, brings you to the lovely site where you can park your vehicle, pitch your tent, have a cool drink and a hot shower.

The spacious campsite is located under large indigenous trees with a view of the African bush. The site is secluded and secure in the centre of Moorings farm, which is known throughout the region for its many old trees and a variety of birds.

There is a fully stocked bar and open dining area with comfortable chairs to enjoy the peaceful view. A self catering kitchen is also available. The ablution block has become famous for its cleanliness and great showers. Each side (women’s and men’s) has two toilets, two showers, two sinks and a laundry basin – all tiled and screened to keep the bugs out.

On the grounds are small katengas (open walled thatched huts) with electricity (outlets for 240V in British 3 prong format) and a light. The katengas are ideal for sitting around a campfire on cool evenings (particularly June and July). During the day, they provide a bit of shade away from the dining area. They make an ideal “living room” next to which you can pitch your tent.

Kasabushi Camp | Central Kafue

Campsite

Kasabushi Campsite opened in 2014 and rapidly earned a reputation as one of the best and prettiest in Zambia, in Southern Africa in fact.  The central part of Kafue National Park had been unavailable to campers so Lib and Andy have introduced a whole new area of the river and bush for self-drivers to enjoy and explore.  Kasabushi Camp is open all year.

A view worth waking up early for.

The location is stunning with views across the river to a palm-covered island as well as up and downstream with resident pods of hippos wallowing in the river.  Elephants can be seen crossing from the island to the mainland later in the dry season.

There’s a great diversity of bird and animal species in the Kafue National Park, more than anywhere else in Africa.  Feedback from guests is that the central Kafue National Park is one of the most pristine, unspoilt and beautiful bush areas they have enjoyed and they love having it almost to themselves.

‘The best campsite showers in Africa’.

The campsite is for self-catering campers only.  Facilities include two  waterfall showers with hot and cold taps, the donkey boiler is lit at 6am and 4pm. Two wash basins also have hot and cold, hand soap and a mirror.  The two flushing toilets have 2-ply paper!

The washing-up area has hot and cold water running and a separate water tap.

Use of a braai stand is included in the nightly charge.  All designated pitches are by the river and pre-held for campers that book ahead.  Firewood is included and efficient, friendly campsite staff are there to supply wood and manage all fireplaces.  Tents and air beds/stretchers/cots are available for hire. Rates

The campsite is surrounded by different species of trees, the main pitches have shade.  The grass disappears late in the dry season leaving brown grass and sandy soil. All pitches give campers space and privacy to enjoy their home in the bush in peace and quiet.  Lib and Andy have gone to a lot of trouble to build a campsite that is functional but attractive and different to anything else campers will have experienced.  The campsite furniture is hand-made and every pitch has a seat/table and stools for sitting or placing a cold beer on.

There are great fishing spots on the river as well as boat launch spots and moorings on the campsite bank.

2-hour boat trips (9-seater Aliboat) are available to campers with Andy as the competent guide/skipper.  Game-drives and guided walks can also be arranged.

Tsetse flies prefer Miombo woodland to riverine bush so the camp stays free of them.  Doom is left at the entrance to the camp to spray any that accompany vehicles into camp.  Mosquitos are rare in the camp or surrounding bush.

The campsite is ideally situated Location just off the Spinal Road, 45kms south of the M9 and 4 hours drive from the outskirts of Lusaka.  From the south it’s less than 3 hours drive on the Spinal Road from Lake Itezhi Tezhi through the park.  Kasabushi Campsite is the perfect place to enjoy the Kafue River and the National Park.
