The charming boutique hotel you see today is an original Cape Edwardian mansion that was built in 1906 and has stood sentinel over Bantry Bay for more than 115 years. With only 13 bedrooms and two private villas, we excel at offering our guests a world-class level of service that is intuitive and understated.

The third bedroom (Yellow) faces the Twelve Apostles mountain range and is designed as a twin room with two single beds (all the rooms can be converted into king or twin beds on request). The first level of Villa Two comprises an inviting central corridor leading to a guest bathroom, study area, and private cinema. There are three luxuriously appointed bedrooms each with an extensive open-plan dressing room, bathroom and separate W/C. The rooms are named Sea Point, Clifton and Bantry Bay, according to their geographical orientation and outlook. Each bedroom extends outdoors onto a private terrace with wonderful views.
Level two:
The top floor (street level) includes a glass-walled entrance foyer that opens up into light-filled living, dining and entertainment areas decorated in soft, soothing sea tones with natural stone and unembellished wood finishes. Fold-away, floor-to-ceiling glass doors on two sides seamlessly integrate the indoor and outdoor entertainment areas, infinity pool, and spectacular ocean views. To the right of the entrance foyer is an open-plan kitchen designed for social, interactive cooking equipped with a large central island, sleek timber cupboards, a separate scullery and walk-in cold room. The kitchen may be closed off from the dining area by a sliding panel. A personal chef is on call to create breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner. The emphasis is on fresh, locally sourced and seasonal ingredients. Any dietary needs or restrictions, food allergies or children’s meals may be discussed with the chef.

The art in this collection tells of the character of our land and the expression of our unique South African experience. From the time of the early pictorial historians of the midnineteenth century, such as Thomas Bowler, you acknowledge that this country has a flavour of its own – an essential nature that distinguishes it from other places. Communities in South Africa were extremely physically and culturally isolated from international centres of artistic innovation in the early 20th Century - a time before instantaneous globalisation of today. The Ellerman House collection traces the progress of pioneering work done in the 1930s by a generation of artists, such as Gregoire Boonzaaier, Maggie Laubser and Irma Stern, who were members of The New Group. Progressive identification by artists, such as Walter Battiss and Alexis Preller, with the essential nature of the land and its people - its Africanism, further reinforced the unique qualities of this land. The emergence of black pioneering artist like Gerard Sekoto and George Pemba began a process of cultural integration of the country’s ethnic communities into a unified South African art. The day starts as dawn breaks over the African bushveld. After an early morning wakeup call, coffee, tea & rusks are served on the main deck. Shortly after, depart in an open Land Rover with experienced Field Guides and Trackers who will share their extensive knowledge of the bush.
These drives are undertaken at times best suited for game viewing which vary depending on the season but typically start early morning.
The afternoon game drive extends into the evening to view seldom seen nocturnal species by torchlight.
After a sumptuous Breakfast is served either back at the camp or in the bush, guests are offered walks to suit their interests and fitness levels and are accompanied by an armed ranger and tracker.
Walks allow guests a better chance to see some of the smaller creatures of the bush as well as an opportunity to learn more about the flora and fauna of the region & to have a chance to follow tracks in more detail.

Each of the ultra-luxurious suites glows with warmth and light. The floors are adorned with Nguni hides, delicately shimmering with touches of gold, copper and silver. Individually designed and sculpted furnishings and deluxe beds are covered in soft, sumptuous fabrics. And overhead, the handmade twig chandeliers with gilded metal branches twinkle softly, mirroring the stars in the night sky. The renowned Amber Suite has been transformed into a stunning private Villa, tucked at the edge of Earth Lodge in the heart of the bushveld. One of the largest in the Sabi Sabi collection, the spacious 240m2 villa with two bedrooms and two bathrooms is perfect for families and friends, comfortably accommodating four guests, with a fifth able to be hosted upon request.
The unveiling of the Amber Villa marks the final phase of renovation of the Earth Lodge suites. Drawing inspiration from the luxury suites, Sabi Sabi was delighted to work once again with Dakota Designs, to curate each and every detail to reflect the bush environment.
The living area is designed for complete relaxation, with bespoke decorative pieces including the daybed which may be easily converted into an additional single bed, accommodating more family members.
Large windows and doors flood the room with light and encourage free movement out to the terrace lounge. Here, timber fans gently rotate above oversized couches and leather hanging sling chairs for a shaded retreat. A shimmering plunge pool is refreshing for guests – and on occasion wildlife.
In the main bedroom suite, with its iconic, original carved Matumi headboard, the bed has been positioned to capture the very best bush views in the utmost comfort. A lounge nook and dressing table sit adjacent to a generous dressing room, which leads to a small, private fitness area with treadmill, light weights and spinning bike.
Flow from the bedroom into the master en-suite, with a freestanding bath and double shower with walls cladded in earthy hues and copper accents.
The second bedroom with twin beds comfortably accommodates two people and includes a dressing and vanity area, as well as direct access to the outdoor lounge. An adjacent second bathroom is fitted with Kiaat timber vanities and polished stone basins beautifully contrast against the textured walls.
