Communities in South Africa were extremely physically and culturally isolated from international centres of artistic innovation in the early 20th Century - a time before instantaneous globalisation of today. The Ellerman House collection traces the progress of pioneering work done in the 1930s by a generation of artists, such as Gregoire Boonzaaier, Maggie Laubser and Irma Stern, who were members of The New Group. Progressive identification by artists, such as Walter Battiss and Alexis Preller, with the essential nature of the land and its people - its Africanism, further reinforced the unique qualities of this land. The emergence of black pioneering artist like Gerard Sekoto and George Pemba began a process of cultural integration of the country’s ethnic communities into a unified South African art. In the Ellerman House Contemporary Gallery, an eclectic, outspoken and energetic generation of current artists such as Benon Lutaaya, Heidi Fourie & Blessing Ngobeni are pushing the boundaries of the ordinary in order to create work that explores relevant issues in post-modern South African society. The Collection records the spirit of the times and the development of art and culture in South Africa. Most of the almost 1000 artworks are exhibited as part of the unique artistic experience that guests can enjoy at the Ellerman House.
For the exclusive use of hotel and villa guests, the Ellerman House Spa is a natural extension of the property’s commitment to quality and personalised service. Situated on the ground-floor of Villa One, it is approached through a garden with tranquil water features, lush indigenous plants and sea views. A small, highly experienced team of therapists offers a carefully considered menu of beauty and body treatments designed for relaxation, rejuvenation and self improvement. Everything is designed to soothe the senses while the body and mind are coaxed into balance. With two single treatment rooms and one double room designed for couples, the spa specialises in cutting-edge massage techniques and anti-ageing beauty rituals drawing on the wisdom and restorative, healing techniques of different cultures from around the world. In addition, there is a sensation shower, sauna and steam room for hydrotherapy. The spa stocks a choice of excellent skin care ranges, including Dermalogica, Environ and !QMS products, for facials, pedicures, manicures, body wraps, bronzing and scrubs.
Small, well-equipped fitness centre with it’s own sauna and change rooms is located beneath the main house for those who want to maintain a workout regime while travelling. There is also an outdoor, heated lap pool tucked away on a private terrace. Up-to-date apparatus set the scene for an invigorating workout with a view. Equipment includes free weights and a bench, treadmill, stationary bicycle, full-body toning machine, stability balls, weighted medicine balls and exercise mats.
The Ellerman House Library offers guests a collection of fiction and nonfiction titles, plus magazines from around the world. Private photographic safaris are booked through Makanyi and designed for guests who are looking for the full attention of the professional wildlife photographer / tutor to maximize their learning and photographic skills. This is open to and suitable for all levels of photographers, be it first time users or more advanced.
We can adapt our vehicle with specialised equipment for professional photography (equipment not included, to be rented separately). A professional wildlife photographer / tutor is available for a minimum of a 2-day immersive photographic safari. Guests’ can rent camera equipment from Africa Photographic Services (advance notice required).

Londolozi Tree Camp, a luxury five star safari lodge in the Sabi Sand Private Reserve, shares unfenced borders with the world famous Kruger National Park. Raised on stilts, the camp is suspended in the trees on a prime site overlooking the Sand River. With over 15 000 hectares of traversing wilderness, no two game drives are ever the same. which abound in these landscapes. Many fine ornithologist guides reside at Londolozi.
Yoga means ‘union’ in Sanskrit and refers to the bringing together of mind, body and spirit. Asanas, also a Sanskrit word, refers to the poses and postures developed in India to join mind and body in spiritual awareness.
At Londolozi we have added the powerful elements of nature to the yoga experience, using both the natural energy of the location and tailor made Asanas, to create a yoga form which is suitable for beginners and intermediate practitioners.
You are free to schedule a private yoga session in your room or in the shade of your deck. Alternatively, daily classes are held on the yoga deck beside Founders Camp. Londolozi’s fully equipped gym offers running, cycling and rowing machines which allow for a perfect workout, complemented by a daily routine of eating well and relaxing into harmony with nature. The gym is situated in Varty Camp and is open to all guests.
Campfires, storytelling, red wine and good company are the hallmark of any winter safari. Coming from a long line of storytellers, Londolozi’s history is steeped in the tradition of campfire yarns told late into the night. In each of the 5 exclusive camps you can hear the whispers of our ancestors and embodied in our history, are the legends and myths of the mysteries and adventures of safari. Each camp has its own spirit and each has its own campfire which awaits you.
On visiting Londolozi in 1992 Mandela saw the vision that was being lived by the employees and management in collaboration with nature.

It is in this light that the Freedom’s Way art installation has been completed to draw attention to the values which Nelson Mandela put forward to our nation and to compliment the Londolozi village walk which all guests are encouraged to experience.
Starting at the 1926 Sparta Camp, situated in the heart of Varty Camp, the village walk in the footsteps of Nelson Mandela is led by Linah Lamula. This short walk from Varty Camp is best taken after breakfast. The village walk allows guests to interact with many of our staff and their families who have lived and worked at Londolozi for over 30 years.
While it is important to recognise Mandela’s solo achievements, it is critical that we take his passion into our own lives, taking forward the elements of great leadership to heal the human affliction in the world. Nelson Mandela is an icon and leader who is loved by all South Africans, young, old, rich and poor. He is known and respected throughout the world. Through all he suffered and achieved and through his attitude and values he has taught us the most valuable lessons as a country and each of us individuals.

The Photographic Studio offers guests the chance to rent a multitude of professional level photographic bodies, lenses and accessories. Gone are the days of lugging heavy camera gear around the world. Now it’s as simple as pre-booking your gear and finding it ready for use upon your arrival at the lodge.
First-time photographers can also try out the latest telephoto lens and body setups by requesting the equipment at the lodge. If you want to capture a close-up of a leopard in a tree, a fish eagle in flight or zebras grooming each other, the photographic studio has the right lens to get you the perfect shot.
The Photographic Studio- on location at Londolozi- is very popular with Londolozi guests, who are able to direct and produce their own creative work. With tuition from a qualified Lightroom instructor, you can spend time between game drives editing and printing your best safari shots on wide-format canvas or high quality photo paper, along with the final edited shots on a memory stick.
