Singita Boulders Lodge | Sabi Sand Nature Reserve

20 May 2018 - 21 May 2018

Set along the boulder-strewn banks of the Sand River in Singita’s privately owned reserve within Sabi Sand in South Africa, Singita Boulders Lodge has a unique sense of place and seamlessly merges the light, shapes and mood of its environment.

The lodge was inspired by the ancient boulders on which it rests and its temperature-controlled wine cellar – featuring an award-winning collection and personalised tastings – was built around some of the organic-shaped rocks found on the site during construction. These shapes are echoed throughout the design of this contemporary sanctuary in the bush.

Expansive decks and walkways invite continuous engagements with the surrounding wilderness, while each of the 12 glass-fronted suites features spacious interiors, a fireplace, private deck, outdoor shower and heated pool. Handmade furnishings and luxurious, textured fabrics echo the raw African beauty outside.

Cleverly designed communal spaces such as the Copper Bar – serving freshly pressed juices, espressos and cocktails – provide intimate opportunities for guests to connect with each other and share stories of the sightings of the day. Offering a front-row seat to 45,000 acres of untouched wilderness, guests at Boulders Lodge enjoy frequent leopard sightings as well as encounters with a magnificent range of animals like rhino, lion, buffalo, hippos and wild dogs.

Accommodation:

Singita Boulders Lodge is found on the boulders-strewn banks of the Sand River. The lodge provides a continuous connection with the prolific wildlife and birdlife for which Sabi Sand is so well known.

Open to the elements or separated from the outdoors by glass walls, guest suites feel close to the river so guests can closely engage with the magnificent setting.

Each suite has an ensuite bedroom, private sitting room and game viewing deck with private plunge pool overlooking the untouched wilderness, creating the perfect sanctuary for guests during their stay.

Rustic, handmade furnishings made from fossilised tree stumps, slabs of solid stone, wrought iron and leather are balanced with the soft, sensual feeling of a sheep-skin rug, natural flax bed linen and cloud-like cotton towels. These subtle layers of luxury blend soulful, sensual Africa with high design to instill a sense of tranquillity, to ease guests into the rhythm of safari life.

  • 8 x River suites are found along the river facing stretch of the property.
  • 2 x Bush suites overlook a well visited watering hole and the untouched wilderness.

Seasons and Weather:

To ensure your comfort you may want to tailor your clothing choices to the time of year:

October – April:

The weather is warm during the day and cooler in the morning and evenings. We recommend casual summer clothes (shorts and cool shirts) and a warm jersey/sweater for the cooler times of day.

May – September:

This is fall and winter and the temperature will be mild during the day, but colder in the mornings and evenings. We recommend casual light clothing and a very warm parka/jacket for the extremely cold mornings and nights.

Best Time to go on Safari:

Southern Africa is a year-round destination. Traditionally the dry winter months (April to October) are best for game viewing, due to the shorter grass, lack of foliage and the absence of water which forces the game to concentrate around the remaining sources of drinking water.

Annual rainfall, usually in the form of short afternoon thunder showers that clear up within an hour, occur from December to March. Many species give birth to their young around the start of the rains, so the bush is alive with newborn animals.

What to Bring

Your safari suitcase, packed properly, will ensure that you have everything you need for the ultimate African bush experience. Cotton clothing in neutral colours is recommended for all game drives and bush walks. It is best to avoid white clothing and dark colours for bush activities, as they tend to attract certain bugs. Formal wear is not required at any of our lodges.

We recommend packing the following:

  • Comfortable walking shoes/track shoes/hiking boots for walks and sandals to wear around the lodge.
  • Swimming costume/bathing suits, sun block, sun hat, sunglasses, lip balm, mosquito repellent (lip balm and mosquito repellent is provided for all our guests, but you are welcome to bring along your favourite brand).
  • Camera and video camera, binoculars, spare memory cards and charging equipment. The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) is strictly prohibited at Singita.  View our policy here.
  • Please note that in the event of rain during a game drive, waterproof ponchos will be provided for guests’ comfort.
  • All of our lodges are located in remote areas and therefore guests should remember to bring an extra pair of correction glasses, contact lens solution and an extra set of contact lenses (if required) as well as a sufficient supply of any prescription medication.

Temperatures

Spring: Sept – Nov: 18°C / 64° to F30°C / 86°F

Summer: Dec – Feb: 23°C / 73°to F35°C / 95°F

Autumn: Mar – May: 12°C / 54°to F26°C / 79°F

Winter: Jun – Aug: 9°C / 48° to F22°C / 72°F

Tips for Travellers

Our lodges are located in malaria risk areas and we recommend that you adhere to the advice of your doctor regarding prophylactics. Insect repellent (spray or wipes), is provided in your suite and on game drive vehicles.

Singita Ebony Lodge | Sabi Sand Nature Reserve

21 May 2018 - 22 May 2018

With a rich heritage that blends an eclectic, romantic mix of European collectables and antiques, African artefacts, historical books and photographs; Singita Ebony Lodge welcomes visitors to unwind in an ambience that typifies the much-loved home of a seasoned traveller. This is where it all started, back in 1993, when this lodge opened its doors as Singita’s flagship property. Today, it stands steadfast amongst enormous trees on the banks of the Sand River in the Singita Sabi Sand reserve – an area fondly known as ‘Big Cat Country’.

Singita Ebony Lodge may be described as one of the finest lodges in the world, but its essence evokes a feeling of familiarity. With the stylish character of a bespoke northern hemisphere home, the influences of English countryside florals mix beautifully with the bold colours of Africa. The vivid green shades of the bush-veld, the earthy tones of the riverbed, the deep ochre of the sunset, the fiery-tinged reds of the exotic plants and multiple hues of the trees that fringe the lodge are reflected throughout. This is the idyllic rendezvous and retreat from the outside world in which to enjoy precious hours of quietude.

In between game drives, lavish meals and a variety of activities, lies a great opportunity for some real rest and reflection. Most days, as they relax on the deck of the dining area that seemingly hovers above the river, guests are rewarded with spotting a variety of large and small animals prior to setting off on a time-honoured safari in an open Land Rover. Here, evenings take on a magic of their own and the senses are honed to absorb every moment of this genuine adventure.

Outside each room on a private deck, guests can soak in the nocturnal sounds and scents of nature and take a dip in the plunge pool to cool down after a hot day in the African bush.

Accommodation:

Singita Ebony Lodge comprises 12 suites, each with its own private plunge pool. Interiors feature curated still-life collections of antiques and artefacts, as well as vintage campaign furniture from the Bailes’ family collection.

Materials like wood, iron, steel and aged bronze hark back to the 19th century, along with oversized sepia photography, glamorous leopard and zebra print upholstery that complements bold graphic tribal patterned murals. Internal and external walls have been replaced by canvas and glass to create safari tent-style suites to maximise views and space.

The entire front wall of each suite between the bedroom and the veranda is made of glass allowing light to flood in. Outdoor pavilion decks – ideal for dining and relaxing – are suspended above the river banks as if hanging from the trees. A beautiful marble and cast-iron table is the furniture centrepiece for this concept – it is a traveller’s desk with smart tools, a private dining room table for entertaining or a bar to enjoy an evening gin & tonic in one.

8 x suites ideal for singles and couples traveling together. One inter-leading unit is available for groups traveling together.

2 x Lewis suites ideal for families with teenage children. The suites are right next to each other and within close proximity to the main lodge area.

2 x family suites ideal for families with small children. The family suites include an en-suite master bedroom and an en-suite twin bedroom as well as a dining and lounge veranda area with a stone fireplace, and a private viewing deck with heated plunge pool.

1 x villa comprises the two family suites with access to an additional private lounge, swimming pool and deck area, which connects these two individual suites. Ebony Villa includes a private guide and vehicle, chef, host and banakeli (personal waiter). There is a private entrance and boma, so small groups searching for complete seclusion will be at ease. The Ebony Villa is suited to up to four adults and four children under 12 years, or up to six adults and teenagers.

Note: Children of all ages are welcome.
