Wilderness Little Makalolo | Eastern Hwange National Park
Little Makalolo lies in one of Hwange National Park’s best wildlife viewing areas. It offers privacy for guests who enjoy small camps and a sense of remoteness. The area is ecologically diverse, ensuring great numbers of animals year-round. The camp’s six spacious en-suite tents, with both indoor and outdoor showers, are nestled in the tree line, with solar power for hot water and lighting ensuring a lighter ecological footprint. Teak walkways lead you to the main area where a false mopane tree shades a separate dining and living area which have views of the much-frequented waterhole. During siesta hours, guests can enjoy up-close and outstanding wildlife viewing at the log pile hide that overlooks the waterhole in front of camp. Activities centre on game drives in open 4x4 Land Rovers and guided walks. The area’s large number of waterholes attracts game in both quantity and variety. This is especially true in winter when water sources become scarce and Wilderness Safaris takes responsibility for pumping 22 of Hwange’s boreholes in the Concession to sustain its wildlife. Guests are also able to visit the nearby village for authentic cultural experiences.

The Makalolo Private Wilderness Reserve is situated in the most prolific wildlife area of Hwange National Park. The varied habitats and vegetation types, as well as countless waterholes, mean that game drives are exciting with always something new to be seen in an exclusive setting.
Evening game drives offer the best opportunity to see the shy nocturnal animals that are rarely seen in the daylight hours. The Hwange 'night act' includes species such as lesser bushbaby, spotted hyaena, leopard, lion, Selous mongoose, pangolin, caracal, porcupine, scrub hare, springhare and even honey badger.
Hwange was proclaimed some 80 years ago and has served as a haven for one of the highest concentrations of game on the African continent. There is no better way to experience this park than on foot, discovering the ecological-diversity of Hwange on a nature walk with a highly experienced safari guide.
This log-pile hide is beautifully placed at the waterhole in front of camp, and is the perfect place to spend afternoon siesta hours. The productive waterhole offers thrilling game viewing to literally a Noah's Ark parade of elephant and buffalo. Elephants are often the star attraction at the hide; just watch out for the sprays of water propelled from their nearby trunks.
* Note that during rare times of heavy rains, the log-pile hide becomes very muddy and inoperative.
Situated on a raised platform overlooking Madison Pan, the Star Bed is just a 20-minute drive away from camp and offers a truly secluded, remote wilderness experience. Spend a romantic night surrounded only by nature, and beneath the canopy of millions of stars.
* Weather permitting and operated subject to the discretion of the Camp Manager.
While the area is best explored on game drives, a visit to the Scorpion Anti-Poaching Unit provides unique insights into our conservation support of Hwange. Depending on the movements of the unit, learn more about the teams and their daily anti-poaching efforts.
* Subject to availability.
An authentic village experience takes place in a manner that is respectful to all parties. Usually around four hours and led by one of the local villagers or a Wilderness guide, it often includes a tour of the school, meeting the headman or headwoman and enjoying cultural interaction with the community.
* The school is closed over the weekend and during school holidays.

Lead by one of our experienced guides, you’ll see magnificent wildlife indigenous to the area. Your guide will show you the hidden spots best for game viewing and give you an insider’s knowledge. With years of experience, our African Bush Camps guides are some of the best in the business.
Our private concessions allow for game drives after the sun has set. Experience the bush when elusive nocturnal wildlife awakens to hunt, forage and live their lives under the cover of darkness.
The Bumi Hills Wildlife Area is bordered in the north west by the Chalala and Mola communities, which are home to the Tonga, a delightful and very spiritual people who have resided in this area and along the length of the Zambezi river for centuries. They have preserved ancient traditions and still live a largely subsistence lifestyle that is reliant on fishing, livestock and small scale farming. In the village of Chalala these customs have melted together with the inevitable infiltration of modern ways of life. However the luxuries of a permanent electricity and water supply to homes are still absent, leaving the communities still largely reliant on the surrounding environment for their livelihood.
Delight in the call of the Giant kingfisher; photograph the majestic Squacco heron or Collared pratincole. Or simply sit back and enjoy their beautiful songs.
Enjoy dinner from atop the hills overlooking Lake Kariba. This iconic view is the undoubtedly the best in Kariba.
Chart a course across the watery wilderness of Lake Kariba and discover the aquatic wonders of this life-giving body of water. Our boat-based adventures afford a unique glimpse into the mysteries of Lake Kariba. Experience the thrill of catch-and-release fishing, observe unique bird-life of the area and relish eye-level wildlife encounters. All are possible during your time with us on the water.
Spend the day cruising the water and taking in the gorgeous views. Try your hand at fishing for tiger, bream (tilapia) or vundu to be caught and then released.
From your floating vantage, sundowner in hand, watch (and listen) as elephants, embossed against a shimmering copper sunset, slake their thirst in mighty Lake Kariba. We can think of no better way to celebrate another magical day on safari in Zimbabwe
Awaken your senses and discover all that the bush has to offer on a walking safari. Accompanied by one of our experienced walking guides, explore the wild for one to two hours. For a full day walking safari, a private walking guide will need to be pre-booked with us. Children under 16 can experience nature walks around the camp led by our child-certified walking guides as part of the Cub Club.
After an day in the bush, relax next to the camp fire and allow yourself to get lost in the starry night above. At night the stars utterly dominate the land; their brilliance and immediacy are totally arresting. Our guides have a growing passion in astronomy and are able to show you show you several star constellations including those which make up the Milky Way.
From nature walks around camp and storytelling to cultural arts and crafts and cub club cooking classes, the African Bush Camps’ children focused Ngwana Club creates a fun and educational environment for children on safari.
