Driving safaris are all conducted in open 4X4 vehicles (Land Cruiser or Land Rover) with either two or three 'rows' of seats. We generally have 4, with no more than 6, people on a vehicle ensuring everyone has a 'window' seat.
Night drives are generally an extension of your afternoon game drive, canoe or walking safari. As the sun begins to set we stop to watch the day come to a close and as dusk falls set off to explore as the nocturnal animals start to emerge.
The best chance of seeing genets, civets, elephant shrew, porcupine and the fierce honey-badger is after sunset and the large predators, with the exception of wild dog, are most active at night. Night time birding can be very rewarding with nightjars, owls great and small, dikkop, bat hawk and coursers are all abundant.
The Africa night sky is simply magnificent and it’s worth coming all this way just to experience its vastness and splendour. The Milky Way seems 100 times brighter in the Luangwa Valley where there is no light pollution. We’re watched over by the Southern Cross, Orion and Scorpio amongst an infinite number of others and memories of sitting in awed silence listening to the distant call of lions, cicadas and a million tree frogs under the crescent of an African moon will live with you forever.

There is little to compare to the thrill of a walking safari, and we are fortunate to have some of the best terrain for exploring on foot in the Lower Zambezi valley right on our doorstep. Walking is the only way you really become intimate with Africa, learning about the small, seemingly irrelevant plants and animals which are often overlooked on a game drive.
We walk accompanied by an armed scout, and your safari guide will show you an amazing secret world of tiny wonders as he leads you slowly through the bush along ancient animal pathways, examining plants, trees and insects along the way.

One of the most leisurely ways to experience the sights and sounds of the Lower Zambezi valley is on a canoe safari. Our canoes seat two guests and a guide in comfort, with ample room for cameras and binoculars.
Canoeing offers you a completely different perspective as you glide gently along either the Zambezi and its beautiful channels or the Chongwe River, allowing you to fully appreciate the magical beauty of this incredible area and the creatures and plants that inhabit it.
It truly is a special experience for the nature lover using only the safest of routes where previous canoeing experience is not necessary, and lifejackets are provided. All you need to do is sit back, relax and watch Africa slip by!

Chongwe is tiger country! The Lower Zambezi is home to the tiger fish, nicknamed the “water dog,” whose sharp teeth are matched only by its fighting spirit and reputation as one of the world’s top game fish.
At Time + Tide Chongwe Suites we offer our guests the chance to head out onto the river in search of this formidable combatant, operating a strict catch-and-release policy in order to preserve stocks of this incredible fish. You can fish with both fly and popper.
Alternatively, you can try your hand at bream fishing on the Chongwe river itself, where a limited catch can be brought back to camp and served up with a delicious lemon butter sauce!
Fishing can be combined with game activities and all equipment is provided, with both conventional tackle and entry level fly rods available. We recommend serious fly fisherman should bring their own tackle. Please contact us for specifications and recommendations.

The Zambezi River offers a variety of additional activities that few, if any, other destinations can offer. One such activity is a river safari which offers both morning and afternoon opportunities to view game from the comfort of a luxury boat.
Sit back and relax as your guide leisurely navigates the islands and main channels of the mighty Zambezi. Cruise the river looking at game, birds and enjoy some of the most spectacular sunsets you are ever likely to see. All without the bumps and dust of game drives.
Morning coffee or evening sundowners can be enjoyed from either the boat or from your own island in the middle of the Zambezi River!

The Chiawa Cultural Village was born of a partnership between conservation organizations (with Africa Wildlife Foundation as a key strategic partner), Lower Zambezi Lodges and the Goba people of Chiawa, championing a cultural tourism enterprise prototype that empowers local people to benefit directly from the tourism trade generated by the profusion of wildlife in the region. It is owned by the Chiawa community through the Tsika Development Company.
At the Chiawa Cultural Village, visitors will embark on a guided tour where they will learn about the lives of the Goba people, their traditions, trades, tools, edifices and arts including dance, song and handiwork of local craftspeople.
Time + Tide Chongwe Suites
When staying in the Time + Tide Chongwe Suites, guests have the option to either dine privately in their suite, or in the dining area of Chongwe Camp for a more lively ambiance. If dining privately in your villa, your private butler will attend to your every want and need. Meal times at Chongwe are up to you:
Breakfast 6.00am - 7.00am. Watch the hippos stir and early morning game drinking from the river bank in front of you while you sip hot coffee and enjoy a light breakfast.
Brunch 11.30am - 12.30pm. After returning from your morning activity a buffet brunch is served.
High Tea 3.30pm - 4.00pm. Meet for drinks and a delicious, freshly baked treat before setting off on your afternoon activity
Dinner 7.30pm - 8.00pm. After pre-dinner drinks and canapés around the fire, guests are seated for a delicious three course dinner served al fresco under a canopy of stars.
Our team of Chefs are more than happy to cater for any special dietary requirements. If your food preferences or requirements could be considered out of the ordinary (vegetarian, vegan, gluten, dairy free etc) then we do ask that you inform us in advance of your arrival.

Back in the 1950’s Norman Carr pioneered walking safaris in Zambia. His aim was to track big game on foot in Zambia’s Luangwa Valley, one of Africa’s last havens of un-spoilt wilderness and home to some of the continent’s greatest concentrations of game. Norman like to say "to view the bush from a vehicle is simply to be an observer, but to get out on foot was to become a part of your surroundings." Over 60 years on, at Norman Carr Safaris we are still walking....we are still passionate about sharing the thrill of tracking lions on foot through early morning mists, the delight in learning something new on every activity and the adventure of walking from camp to camp the original safari way. Walking safaris are immersive, sensual and peaceful. In Zambia, an armed wildlife ranger or "scout" leads each walking group, followed by the trained walking guide. In other countries, the walking guide is armed and leads the group alone. Having a walk led by two wildlife experts was conceived by Norman and our 60 year track record of safety speaks to the effectiveness of this approach.
While certainly vehicle safaris allow one to cover more ground and see a greater volume of game in a 3-4 hour safari, it is only on a walking safari where all your senses are heightened and you can see, hear, smell and feel the bush. You begin to understand the interconnectedness of the flora and the fauna, how each small part plays an important role in the greater ecosystem. Small mysteries of the bush are unlocked and explored; tracks are investigated; and the wide variety of animal poo becomes an unexpected and fascinated learning experience! And while generally speaking, walks are more focused on the little things in the bush, tracking big game on foot is not uncommon and always thrilling.

Driving safaris are all conducted in open 4X4 vehicles (Land Cruiser or Land Rover) with either two or three 'rows' of seats. At Chinzombo, Luwi, Nsolo, Kakuli and Mchenja we generally have 4, with no more than 6, people on a vehicle ensuring everyone has a 'window' seat.
Night drives are generally an extension of your afternoon game drive or walking safari. As the sun begins to set we stop to watch the day come to a close and as dusk falls set off to explore as the nocturnal animals start to emerge.

Once regarded as the time in the safari calendar to be avoided by less adventurous operators, the 'Secret' Season months of January through March are now heralded by those lucky enough to experience them, as the highlight of the year.
Norman Carr Safaris has always been open all year round and is the only Zambian safari operator to open a true Bush Camp in the Luangwa at this time of year. Kakuli opens around the 20th January and closes again in early April. We gain access to camp by boat and activities are either on foot or by boat. A few days at Kakuli combines very well with the game drives and prolific wildlife on offer in the areas around Kapani Lodge and Chinzombo.
During these Secret Season safaris the bush is in its fullest flush of growth, rivers and lagoons are brimming and boating safaris take you eye to eye with hippos and crocs. The air is clear and excellent for photography; you will find magnificent skyscapes and sunsets with the occasional dramatic tropical downpour.
A wealth of migratory birds in breeding song and plumage make the bush a wonderful place to explore at this time of year. It is a time of plenty so there is no shortage of wildlife; the Secret Season months are usually the best for seeing wild dogs in the South Luangwa.

Paths made in the soft sand or along raised wooden walkways lead you to our three luxury en-suite Chalets, each tucked away in a quiet spot on Sindabezi Island. While the Chalets all share certain qualities, like private river-facing decks, luxurious interiors and double or twin sleeping options, each has its own special feature. The 'loos with a view' are a quirky feature of both Chalets 2 and 3, while the hammock in Chalet 4 is ideal for lazy afternoons. Another special highlight of Chalet 4 are the resident hippos that wallow in the river below, keeping you entertained from the comfort of your deck.

A glorious sunrise view is all yours at Sunrise Chalet 1, the only chalet on the southern side of Sindabezi Island. The other feature that sets it apart from Chalets 2, 3 and 4 is the large, modern outdoor bathtub. Covered by a blanket of bubbles and with a sundowner in hand, you can watch the Zambezi River drifting down to the Falls as the sky turns shades of pink, purple and orange. Sunrise Chalet 1 holds firm to its spot in the ‘romance department’ on Sindabezi Island.

Secreted away on a secluded part of Sindabezi Island with a sandy shoreline and stunning river view all to yourselves, celebrate love as castaways in our Honeymoon Chalet.
Imagine bathing together beneath the stars on your private deck before climbing into a four-poster bed draped in netting. Then, wake to hippos in the river and birds twittering in the trees, knowing another day of relaxed island living lies ahead of you.
The natural beauty of the island is complemented by the luxury of the Honeymoon Chalet. Modern fittings pair effortlessly with locally sourced wooden furnishings and textiles. The neutral tones woven throughout the Chalet reflect the beach cove wilderness in which it sits.

Dip your sandy toes into our splash pool while taking in the beauty of neighbouring islands in the Zambezi River. Even the hippos will be a little jealous as you float in the cool water or relax on a lounger under the trees.

Kick back at the Sindabezi Sand Bar in the middle of the Zambezi with that special person (or people) in your life. In true pop-up style, the location of our sandbar in the changes depending on the time of the year as nearby islands appear and disappear. So you never know where on the river we might take you.

Dine in true Sindabezi style while anchored offshore in the Zambezi River on a floating platform. This is a breakfast or dinner experience quite unlike any other. Attended by waiters, each meal is paddled out one course at a time to your private sampan. For breakfast, we advise an early start before the real heat of the day settles in. The sampan dinner is the only activity that will return to the island after nightfall.

Let our guides pick you a shady spot on a sandy island nearby – Sindabezi is not the only magical island on the Zambezi for those that love feeling entirely isolated from civilisation. Good company needs equally marvellous food and drinks, and our picnic lunch or sundowners and snacks match the occasion.

Join one of our guides on a walk around the island with binoculars and a bird book to spot some of Sindabezi’s diverse birdlife. Or if you would prefer to range a little further afield, you can take your talking bird book (Captain Ronald, for example!) into one of the boats and float around the nearby islands to see what you can find.

Set a rod up against your very own river and wait for a nibble – is there anything more relaxing than that? There is no need to leave Sindabezi Island at all, although if you’re looking for a little more excitement, our guides do know the best spots to take a boat and hope for tiger fish.

See one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World with a trip to Victoria Falls on the Zambian side and as a non-inclusive activity take a trip to Livingstone Island and a dip in the famous Devil's Pool

There's always plenty to see on the Zambezi River

This is the only wildlife park in the area that provides refuge to white rhinos, which are closely protected by anti-poaching units. While on your game drive, keep an eye out for giraffe, buffalo, waterbuck, impala, wildebeest, zebra and diverse bird life.

All guests are invited to visit, engage with, and learn from the Tongabezi Trust School’s 280 bright, talented students, all of who receive free education and nutritious meals at Tujatane. In fact, if you are only going to do one happy thing during your stay at Tongabezi, we’d suggest it is a tour of this school.

Enjoy a short cycle to meet the friendly people from the Simonga village

The Maramba and Mukuni markets are visited daily by hundreds of people from Livingstone and surrounding areas. They come to buy everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to chitenge, the bright patterned fabric characteristic of Southern and East African fashion. One of our team will be there to guide you through the marketplace and will be there to help you with buying from vendors if you need.
