Chettinad is the home to the Chettiars, a prosperous mercantile community. Apart from many other things this place is well known for its fiery cuisine and architecture. Most of the palatial 18th century mansions that one will get to see here were built using materials imported from east Asian countries and Europe about 100 years ago.
Each of the 73 villages have traditional chola style temples that stand testimony to the spiritual beliefs of local people. Each temple has its own tank called an Oorani and most of the village activities are centered around the temple.
The celebrated Chettinad cuisine is one of the spiciest and the most aromatic in India. The fresh ground masalas give it the distinctive integrity in taste. The cuisine that is pre dominantly non vegetarian stretches out into interesting snacks and delectable vegetarian dishes too. Aathangudy, a village situated about 10 Kms from Visalam is a place famous for its hand made tiles. There are over one hundred small scale tile factories in this village where the entire tile making process is carried out by human hands.
The famed Chettinad's Cotton sarees and textiles are woven on in small handloom home units across Chettinad. A couple minutes walk away from Visalam is one such handloom unit making the most vibrant Indian textile.

The Spice Garden Cottages come with a small little living area and a spacious bedroom with an attached bathroom. The Elephant Grass which has been used to thatch the roof keeps the temperature within the cottage, very comfortable all year round.
The cottages at Spice Village are inspired from the local dwellings and created from the locally available designs and materials. Elephant grass abundantly available at the Periyar Tiger Reserve is used as the roofing for these wooden cottages and it’s an interesting experience to observe the local craftsmen when they re-thatch the cottages. Coconut lagoon is located upon the Vembanad lake, one of India’s largest inland lakes with its own distinctive ecology that supports a plethora of natural life. There’s only one way to get to Coconut Lagoon: over the water. From their private jetty about a kilometer upstream, the boat ride will take you over the lake’s gentle swells, past lazy coconut palms and houses, to the resort. If you are a bird lover then Coconut Lagoon will give you many days of happy bird spotting. The guest cottages at Coconut lagoon are individual works of art. They were built from the remnants of old mansions - tharavads, that were once the family homes of the nobility of the land. They were brought here in sections and painstakingly reassembled by skilled craftspeople so that you can experience first hand what it is to live in these ancient and celebrated houses of yore. In homage to the environment that supports and sustains us all, they have their very own sacred grove in the property. It is a piece of pristine ‘forest’ dedicated to nature, while keeping with a time honoured tradition.

The butterfly garden is an experiment we tried many years ago. We found a space with natural moisture, sunlight and a profusion of wild flowers. Butterflies seemed to love the space, and we noticed varieties migrating in from miles away. All that remained was to add some flowing water, a few well-chosen plants and within weeks we had a garden alive with flashing wings. Coconut Lagoon also has some 54 species of dragonflies and damselflies, all evidence of a thriving ecosystem.
